Another business bites the dust... Yes, it's Sad to see yet another establishment go under in this ever-evolving economy. JOANN Fabrics and Crafts filed for Chapter 11 Bankruptcy and will be closing all of its stores at some point in the near future, if they haven't closed already. The Thousand Oaks location is currently on the process of clearing out its merchandise with varying discounts on all product that remains. I walked through the store a few weeks ago to see what they had, it was still pretty well stocked, but I imagine it will get less and less as product gets marked down even further. I feel sorry for the people who will lost their jobs, hopefully the company will provide a decent severance package as it's never pleasant getting laid off. Sad to report that this Joann's is done/closed/gone for good. I went by yesterday hoping for some last minute bargain shopping. I'd previously tried the Simi Valley store with the same results. Per the emails I've still been receiving from Corporate, they expected stores to be open until 5/30. Simi didn't surprise me as it was a smaller location than T.O., but I was dismayed to see this one already shuttered. I've been shopping there for decades, and used to work at the predecessor, Cloth World. It's a sad ending with no direct competitor to take over, especially on the sewing/fabric side. Hoping that Michael's will up their yarn game to pick up the slack. Still, this is an unhappy day for those of us who love creative pursuits to round out our lives. read more

We visit this store for the fleece, yarn, circuit vinyl and decor selections. There is a large fleece selection, and it is great to get them on sale or use a coupon, this is usually a win here! The employees who cut are always helpful and speedy. There really is a large selection of yarn, different brands and weights, but we don't always find what we'd are looking for to continue a project as it seems to change a lot. Decor is so cute! The seasonal items have to be bought 4 months before the season even starts but if you get there early there is a great selection! Make sure you give yourself ample time to check out, this ALWAYS takes twice as long as you think it will! That is the one reason that will make me think twice about shopping here, but overall this Joanns has items I can't get anywhere else nearby. read more

Dealt with the rude and unprofessional associate, Rebecca. When I asked to speak to her manager, Heather, I realized the attitude is a store wide issue. Heather just blatantly said she should've told her employees about the new rule closing their cutting table at a certain time. I explained how difficult it is for me to leave the house with 2 kids to come get these sort of tasks done and they should have it posted SOMEWHERE that their cutting table closes before the store closes! I'm closer to the one in Oxnard, but I prefer this one. Selection is way bigger! Store does not seem rundown compared to the location in Oxnard does. Julia helped me checking out and was the sweetest woman to talk with. She made great convo. I would come back just to see her! Some pieces were on sale so I was looking to know the prices before buying and she didn't mind telling me the price then removing it if I asked. This is huge in sales. Most other places I often have experiences where asking the employee to remove something, seems like you're asking so much of them. However, that was not the case here with Julia. Every time I come in, I'm greeted by the first cashier. Then they leave me alone. That's the way I like it. I have a piece of furniture whose back faces the living-room. I found a piece of fabric to put on the back. Now I need single-fold bias binding to frame it with. Blanket binding would work, too. They've been out of both in my color for two weeks, and no one seems to know when they will get some in. The fabric dept. takes up almost half the big store, so there's plenty of fabric to choose from, at all price points. There's also a lot of yarn, knitting needles, and crochet hooks available. My only issue with this store is that they seem to display like items all over the store. Most of the bias tape is in a rack behind the thread and zippers. But there's some on top of the pattern cabinets, too, and who knows where else. How-to and pattern books are also spread all over the place. read more

Updated from one star to two with follow-up comments at the bottom... How awful does a store have to be to reduce a sixteen year old girl to tears? My daughter just called me saying she's never been treated so badly. She has never shopped a fabric store before and didn't know about the cutting table so took the roll up to the register. After being talked down to and made to feel stupid at the register, she received nearly the same treatment from the lady at the cutting table. Honestly, you cannot expect every single person to know how this works if they've never been there. Instead of being helpful to a newbie you've made her swear never to shop there again. Update: I took my daughter back a few hours later to return the fabric she bought since she thought it was on sale and it was not. When we arrived at the store she remarked that none of the people from earlier were there and everyone was much nicer. Apparently there had been a shift change. We had a much better experience with very helpful people giving us very good advice. read more

Atrocious customer service. I came in today and needed help finding an item. I had to get help from the woman at the cutting table who was rude and acted like I was bothering her. Now comes the actual reason for the bad review. I was third in line and after waiting nearly 20 minutes due to the line not moving at all with one cashier. One of the customers wanted to speak to the manager and because there was only one cashier the entire line stopped. I ended up walking out of the store, and not getting what I came in for. Total waste of time and I will never go back. I should also mention that the store was filthy and the shelves were disorganized and a mess. Everything was also extremely overpriced. read more

If you have a 'crafty' need there is no doubt Joann's has what you need. I went there on a Sunday and wanted to purchase a pair of scissors; all of these items are secured on the display rack. Such a good store but my app never works inside. Sometimes a nice cashier will help out and scan a coupon. But today i got Karen as my cashier. She let me struggle awkwardly with the app and even though i asked her if it was worth it and she said i was up to $64 and could save a few bucks she didn't offer to help. So because i didn't want to hold up the line i passed on the app savings. I try to have it ready but sometimes i forget. I know they aren't obligated but come on! I love this Joann's location. I can spend hours in here & I have. It's usually very clean & organized. They have a great selection of fabrics. Some can be in the pricey side, but I always keep my eyes peeled for coupons & ALWAYS go online & screen shot coupons I can use in the store. Whatever fabrics are not on sale I usually have a 40% or 50% off coupon. Also, the staff is very helpful & knowledgeable about products & project suggestions. Sometimes they can be short staffed, but typically everyone working is a team player. Although, I love Joann's, whatever they don't have or don't have in stock, I typically find at Michael's. If one doesn't have canvases on sale, the other does. Just a tip for those die hard crafters or those who want to be. read more

This place frustrates me so much! I've not once had a transaction go as planned. This time the problem was that the material I picked was marked 3 yds for $4...but apparently, as said by the manager, many of the other materials not on the sale were mixed in with the sale items. The staff was so helpful especially Kathleen and Snow! Those two ladies really helped me out and were super patient with me. I was shopping for a job and had to do multiple transactions, they helped me maximize my coupons and save the most money. I would have bought more plants if they had them! Don't bother trying to call them. When you go to customer service, it'll ring then it says "Please continue to hold." Ring. "Please continue to hold." This goes on for about 5-10 times. Very annoying. When I went into the store, I did not realize that the store was going to kick you out right at the exact time of closing. I thought they would give me a few minutes to shop quickly. I guess they were in a hurry to get home and customers are not first. I was frustrated because when I tried shopping quickly I still could not find what I wanted. Oh, how I love Jo-Ann! I went in there looking for an eyelet setter and came out with a bunch of stuff I didn't even need! Lots of departments had 30-50% off! The salesman was very helpful and directed me to the aisle I needed for the eyelet setter. My arms were full and I decided I needed a basket. To my surprise, there was a stack of shopping baskets right there at the end of one of the aisles. I'm into artsy-fartsy, crafty stuff so I was wandering through the store for a long while, eyes wide open. I like that this store has a good selection of basic craft supplies plus a good selection of fabric and sewing supplies. There aren't a lot of other stores in the TO area that do either, so finding both in the same building is nice. It can be hard to find someone to help you and the lines are often long (both to check out, or to get fabric cut), but they usually have what I need, and the prices seem fair. Busy shopping center. Parking lot gets full. This location seems a little short staffed. At the fabric counter there was a long wait. You need to grab a ticket and wait. Then when you go to pay, its another really long line. They fabric selection was great. We have been here a few times for kid's print fabrics and velvet. If you can't find what you are looking for, I'd poke around the fabric counter and look at "go backs". All the recently selected bolts sit there until someone has time to put it all back. read more

Nice selection of items! I like this store and one of the salespeople, Suchi is sweet. Overall staff is dazed and half asleep and not helpful although sometimes a vendor is there and can help you find something. Lines are always long here. they are great about the coupons though and staff is nice, just outside of the one lady, seemingly completely uninterested in helping with finding things or projects. I understand however, the lights in there give me a headache as well. There are lots of options for arts and craft projects. read more

This review is for the classes Joann's offers, not the store itself. I signed up for a knitting class for Saturday, 1/4. I've always wanted to learn to knit and have been intimidated to try, and felt in-person guidance could help with that. The class was 11:30am-2pm and $35, and my class was taught by Yvonne. I was the only person in the class, which was great because it was constant 1:1 learning and feedback. I was able to learn to cast on, the knit stitch, the purl stitch, and how to cast off/finish my work. I made a sampler and started a new piece to refresh myself on how to cast on. Taking this class was great because when I went home and watched tutorials on YouTube, I was able to understand what they were doing. I only wish Joann's had an ongoing knitting class to continue learning with someone at a steady pace. I'll be coming back for a sewing class and future knitting classes! read more

Lately, shopping at Joanns has been SO MUCH BETTER. The aisles are clearer and easier to get around. Now they have great sales on fabric and thread. The employees have really been pleasant and helpful. My pleasant experience was with Vanessa- she made sure that my order was correct and that I was out of there in a timely fashion. So much stuff, great deals and yes it is crazy busy- especially during the holidays no matter the holiday. The deals however are great and there are some good finds! I once bought about $70 dollars worth of stuff that cost me only $35. Great thing to do is sign up for their coupons either in the store or online. You can have coupons e-mailed or mailed. The only downfall is that some of the coupons are only good for non on sale items- most are on sale. The people who work here are very helpful and friendly as well. read more

This review is weeks overdue, but if I am still thinking of the service I received.. you know it's either really good or really bad. It's neither.. it was exceptional, the best teamwork I've ever seen in the decade plus of going to this exact location. It was later in the evening, as usual I was greeted when I walked in.. but this time it was different. Blake really did seem welcoming...though his smile was hid behind a mask, the enthusiasm in his greeting, and the smile in his eyes, couldn't be masked. I check out every isle. I saw "Snow" working almost every isle too! Then helping in fabric, or to the front, while Blake was helping one customer get something down for them, then trotting.. not the usual Nonchalant walk from employees who don't care whose waiting, Blake had a very quick but still professional walk, back to the register and was chipper as could be about it. I overheard them assisting customers, asking if they found everything they were looking for, etc. etc. Snow, was just as amazing. I've worked in customer service for decades, so I notice everything.. not just how they interact with customers but with each other.. and they were on point!! I asked each of them various questions, and they didn't even flinch.. they were prepared for anything I was going to question, or at least, they seemed confident in their ability to help me, and they did exactly that. I like that. They knew locations of products, uses, etc. I left the store with every item on my list, ( which never happens) and some extra items, which usually does. The two, Snow and Blake..are impressive on every level of their job, communication skills, the positive energy, their knowledge, and obviously hard working, all around surpassing the last 20 trips to this exact location combined. Yet, there's more..what really stood out? They were friendly... seriously, not just the blah, blah, blah of the expected "good customer service", they were pleasant to talk to. I spoke, they were attentive to what I was inquiring about. They didn't rush me, even bringing me to the location of a particular item, and really, each in their own way, had a extra quality that's rare in retail. They were genuine in their character ...legit happy, helpful and even had a bit of " they're just cool people", working a job they enjoy. They're A-plus employees, Here's to you, Blake & Snow.. job well done! I appreciated your help, and friendliness. NOW.. here's to JoAnns.. wtheck is wrong with you? Your grossly understaffed,,they're running around, doing everything that you are requesting them to do, requiring them to wear a mask, yet, I who was casually walking around barely felt as if the air conditioning was on? I bet at the pace they were going, it must've been like torture from the lack of air conditioning and exerting themselves,,all while wearing a mask. I know JoAnns measly pay scale, and though they are individually receiving payment for doing one singular job, that's bs. They're expected and ARE doing the work of at least 3 employees each... and in a hot humid environment, suck it up JoAnns, pay them what they are worth! I never met them before, but have dealt with countless individuals of whom I helped train over the years.. and if you don't realize the gold you have working there... Im sure that eventually, you'll be just a stepping stone, as each of them move on to companies that would be grateful to employ individuals with such impressive work ethics. "Snap!" Wake up, Jo Annnn... they deserve a Pat on the back, and a bonus in their pocket. If not, I'm pretty confident that they're hard work will catch the eyes of other people, maybe one who just might be hiring. I went in this store to buy some trim. I found it and took it to the lady to cut it. I've shopped in Joann's for many years and today was the most unpleasant experience I've ever had. First of all no one was in line. I walked up and said Hello, but she didn't even acknowledge me. Okay she maybe didn't hear me. When she was finished I said thank you again she didn't say anything, but gave me a look that could kill. There was something about her that was so cold and evil I wondered why Joann's would hire such an unpleasant person. I mentioned my experience to the cashier, but she didn't care. So Joann's hiring staff, please hire people that really believe in Customer Service. Don't hire crabby people because they can ruin your day and make it so NO ONE will want to shop in your stores. read more

I dont understand how you can be a craft store during the holidays and have 2 cashiers. The line stretches about halfway through the store. And it's not like theres a bunch of employees throughout the store. No theres only one person at the cutting table and one walking through the store doing nothing. This place needs an overhaul.
