While we were in the area, we decided to stop by this liquor store. Staff: The staff here seemed like they were bored as there were not many customers at the time. However, they were helpful in locating certain alcoholic drinks in the store. The staff was friendly and greeted us with a warm welcome. Items: Besides alcohol, they also sell cigars, cigarettes, and bags of ice. Cleanliness: The store was clean with no trash visible to the customers eyes. All the shelves and areas were neatly organized. Prices: The prices for alcohol like most liquor stores and depends on the item you are purchasing. Overall: I would come back to this location but sometimes it is a pain to enter and exit since it is located off of route 1 south. read more

My very first and very last visit to Joe Canal's. There's a specific Bourbon I was looking for that is supposedly at Joe Canal's based off of said Bourbon's website. I walk into Joe's to find a gentleman standing at some desk with his head down looking at his phone. I said hello to get his attention and asked if I could ask a question. This man never looked up from his phone and said "yea". I normally just walk out of a place with this type of service but I was on a mission. A little taken back, I asked him did they have the bourbon. While still staring at his phone he paused and said no. I'm both disappointed and impressed by this place. I'm disappointed at the way this man couldn't look up from his phone to make eye contact with me THE CUSTOMER while talking. We got scammed at this store. We bought a 15 year old scotch as a gift in a box. And to our embarrassment the bottle inside was 12 years old. Please be careful and alert if you choose to shop here. Staff racially profiled me and my brother, accusing us of shoplifting. We were in the store carrying two large bottles in our hands and two buzzballs. The cashier claimed to have seen us sneak liquor into our pockets .... while wearing swimming trunks. Without notice or communication, another staff member came up to us and aggressively grabbed the bottles from us, yelling to get out. We were genuinely confused at the time. Once they explained that they saw us steal, I asked them to run the cameras and call the police if that was the case, which they did not want to do. I also asked to speak to a manager, in which the person I was speaking to claimed he was. 5 minutes later another staff member approached us claiming he was the manager. I wouldn't want to take odds that Joe Canal's doesn't have what your looking for. If it's aged in oak, brewed in a barrel or infused with maple syrup in someone's Transylvanian bathtub, Canal probably has it at an attractive price. Adult beverages of every stripe rise to the ceiling and if for some reason you get lost, the staff is extremely knowledgeable and eager to help you track down that elusive spirit. I was immediately impressed both with the selection and the organization. Not only were the wines organized by type and also by country, but for many countries, the were further organized by region. I would have like to see a larger selection of wines from certain countries (e.g., Portugal) but was impressed by the selection from others (e.g., Chile). Likewise, I was about 99% satisfied with the whiskey aisle. I saw a lot of selections I like or have wanted, yet I could not find my personal go-to cocktail bourbon in stock (not that that's an issue, as I can easily find that particular item elsewhere). Joe's scored bonus points for having some less common liqueurs for which I had been searching for almost six months. I also very much appreciated being able to instantly join their Bottle Club for the immediate discount. I'm only in or pass through this area a few times a year, but a stop here is worth the side trip. read more

Great store good prices. This location have a very wide selection of wines and the staff is very knowledgeable. I do enjoy drinking wine but usually just stick to Cabernet Sauvignon. I went there recently with my mom who is planning on visiting and hosting friends and family for the upcoming holidays and she wanted to restock her wine cabinet. The sales associate was awesome he asked her, what her price range was and what she liked and put together a case of wine that was very well rounded with a price range from $6 to $16. I also love their bourbon selection. I walked away with something new to try as well. I travel from nearby Staten Island to shop here and the savings more the covers gas and tolls. The employees working here are rude and unprofessional. Called today asking for allocated bourbon e.h Taylor. She said she had small batch and single barrel. She stated she would put those a side for me and asked if I only wanted one of each. When I arrived she called me and says I can't have those bottles because they are allocated. I explained to her that I was already here and would come inside to discuss and she started to give me a lot of attitude. She said bro your not getting a bottle and that's it!!!! I asked to speak to the manager and she stated to call his number on the card. When attempting to call another store employee stated that was the store number and not to bother calling now since no one is in to speak with me. She continued to be disrespectful and rude the whole time. Talking with a lot of attitude instead of trying to be helpful knowing that she made the mistake and made me drive out to the store. She also told me that those bottles are taken off the shelf and put in the managers office and kept in the back for special customers. I guess I'm not that specials even tho I shop here very often. She did not apologize one for the inconvenience to me instead continued to talk like some street thug. I am not sure why anyone would hire her to be the manager on duty. Seems like store was busy today due to 4th of july weekend. I bought about $300 worth of wine and beer. Shelves were somewhat empty, i checked in on the yelp app, as they advertised a free wine carry om bag. To my surprize, they had run out of the bags, which by the way this is the second time that they dont have anymore bags. Please remove the yelp check in, as it is misleading. I am a wine Club member, as there is a good variety of wines and beer at this location. As i made my way up and down the aisles, i found several items advertised that were not on shelves. 6/21/20 saw a customer shopping with no mask. They have a sign in the entrance and complimentary hand sanitizer, but they really need to enforce the mask rule. If a customer comes indoors without a mask or takes their mask off, they should be instructed to put it back on or leave. COVID is nothing to fuck around with. read more

Always have great experiences here and will go out of my way to go here, even if it's just for 1-2 bottles of wine that I could have gotten at other liquor stores 5-10 min closer to me. Prices are great, bottle club is totally worth it. Rude staff and They need to be clear on policy, I was with someone under 21 because I needed help carrying all my items and they wouldn't sell to me even though I'm 25 I don't live in jersey but I've never had a problem buying alcohol in the presence of a minor. I'm giving Joe Canal's two stars (Meh. I've experienced better) for a few, totally legitimate reasons: 1. They also have a website, www.ultimatewineshop.com which charges a $6 internet order fee if you're picking up at the store ... (what's up with that?) 2. The store prices and the internet prices aren't the same - so, you don't really know if you're being charged extra or less if you shop the store or shop the internet. 3. You can't use the Bottle Club card on the internet site and get a discount. This is really a shame because sometimes I like going into the store and shopping around a bit (usually when I have time), and other times I'd rather place an order on the Internet and just be in and out in a couple of minutes. When I asked the nice person who brought me my order 'why', she just shrugged and said, 'good questions ... I don't know'. Other than these gripes, both the website and the store are top notch (4 stars, easily). I don't know what the reasons are for the internet / retail store disparities, but to be perfectly honest if it weren't for the internet site I would have never stepped foot into the store in the first place. If these bogus fees and price differentials are there to defray the cost of operating the website, then JC's is really doing their customers a huge disservice. I can think of three other local A-Class stores, all of which have retail websites, that don't do the same thing as JC's. Too bad because I actually like the store a lot. They seem to have competitive prices, but I'm not sure I'm getting their BEST price. There was lots of wine from various regions at a variety of price points that made me taking too many bottles and having to put stuff back left and right. No, they don't have a lot of aged bottles, but this is a large chain, so that's just to be expected. But, there was stuff that I only normally see at specialty stores and on mailing lists. Most importantly, THERE WAS LOPEZ HEREDIA!!! Seriously, I don't come across them too much at regular retail stores so that put me in a great mood to begin with. Joe C's is a great place. The staff is very smart and helpfull. Their prices are the best in my part of Jersey and so I go there every weekend for my "essentials". They have the best selection of craft beer as well as mass produced name brand beer. Their wine department has every region in the world represented. Whenever I get a craving for a kooky tiki drink or a fine cocktail, they always have that strange liquor or odd ingredient to make my home game version of the drink that I had at the bar. The cashier and store manager (lady with black and green hair) were SO rude ! My friend and I were purchasing liquor and when we got to the register the cashier asked if we had our IDs , I proceeded to let her know that my friend and I did but my little sister is under age so she doesn't have an ID . So she with attitude tells us she can't sell to us . This was a policy I'm totally unfamiliar with so I asked to speak to the manager . So she rolls her eyes and calls for the manager. When the manager arrives I explained to her the situation - she tells me they have a sign in the front that says everyone who enters the store has to be 21 ... we walk to the front ... NO SIGN. Super happy with this store. I am a scotch guy and the selection and prices here were perfect. Nice, up to date, rare bottles in the glass... I was looking for very specific bottles and they had everything I wanted and then some. I also got my parents a bottle of double-cross vodka for Christmas and they had it when not everyone else did. The vodka section was huge, but a bit unorganized. They for sure needed more people helping out right before the holidays. Checkout was quick and they take credit cards. Large parking lot out front, just a bit dicey getting in off the highway if you don't know where it is. Luckily they have a giant sign out front. Very happy customer here. read more

Been here several times with no problems. I dropped by on memorial day and did not see any signage with posted holiday hours. Maybe I missed it, maybe it wasn't there at all? I passed several employees while I was browsing. They shut the lights off on me while I was in the middle of the beer aisle. When I emerged and asked if they were closing, they said they closed at 6 (It was maybe one minute after 6). I just don't understand why any of the employees didn't let me know the store was closing soon. Or, why they didn't make an intercom announcement. Downright rude. Prices are very good, but have been disappointed in their curbside pickup. First it was free and then they started charging $3.99. I was Ok with paying the $3.99, but what I didn't realize is that at some point they changed their curbside pickup and you can only pick it up before 5. So when I went to pickup my order at 6:30 I called and they told me I had to go inside to pick it up. Next time I went before 5 pm and was outside the store calling for more than 5 minutes and no one answered the phone so I had to go inside to get someone. The whole point of paying for curbside is so that you don't have to go in the store. Store isn't exactly close to where I live so I will have to find somewhere else to order my liquor. read more

Joe Canal's is located off of Route 1 in Iselin, NJ. There's a large parking lot, that is easy to access from the highway and easy to pull out from. The store itself is a warehouse full of selection and variety. There is a tremendous whiskey selection, one that I wouldn't be able to find anywhere close to home, and all offered at very affordable prices. Want to be treated like a criminal? If you're in the mood to be treated like a second class citizen then this place is for you. This might be my first yelp review but my experience was so mind blowingly awful that I was compelled to write about it. My fiancé and I (both 30 years old) walked into Joe Canals to pick up a few things. I have been coming here for a while and I am a bottle club member and appreciated the large selection. Upon entering I was basically shaken down by some guy who looks like would be better suited begging for change on the street than 'working' here. He immediately demanded my ID. I thought it was odd that I was being carded when I entered, but no big deal I guess; I complied. My fiancé didn't have her wallet on her, so I explained that I would be the one buying the alcohol anyway. Meanwhile someone else was entering and while the homeless-esque 'bouncer' they had working the door was busy verbally abusing them, my fiancé and I went about our business of shopping. We spent about 20 minutes browsing and picking up various items and when we approached the front of the store, the 'door man' saw my fiancé and insisted that she leave immediately. Confused, she very calmly explained that we just spoke to him and he let us in. He proceeded to lie and claim we 'snuck in past him'. Remember, this is a liquor store not a night club. My fiancé began to leave which I wasn't happy about, but if that weren't bad enough, the door thug threw me out as well claiming that I couldn't be in the store because I walked in with her. Mind you, I did not do or say one thing that would warrant this treatment. I put my items down and left. I was pissed and made that pretty clear. With all the liquor stores around, there is no need for me to ever set foot in this place again. It simply isn't worth it and they will never see a penny out of my pocket again. Now I am a rational person, and if it had been stated when I walked in "I'm sorry sir your girlfriend doesn't have proper ID, youll both have to leave" I would have been shocked, but would have shrugged my shoulders and left.
