We looked spontaneous for a late dinner and found Joe penas which has kitchen till late and also drinks. So let's see Food: - Tex/mex kitchen but also specialties and steaks. So we tried a burger and a chicken plate(orange chicken). - the chicken burger was fine, nothing special, the fresh fries OK that's it seemed not self made. Wouldn't recommend. - the chicken dish was nice, a bit of spice, a bit of sweetness, overall well rounded taste. - for dessert we had "the best cheesecake in town". I need to say it was really good, can't say the best in town but sure top level. Drinks: We had gin tonic. Let's say they know there craft and we were totally satisfied. So in the end I can say that there are highlights on the card and the drinks are top. read more

I realize that I was in Germany, not Mexico, so the food was probably not going to be authentic. With that said, it was the most bizarre Mexican food I have ever experienced. It was very busy on a Tuesday night. The service was kind of slow, but probably expected due to how busy it was. Most Mexican restaurants in the US serve chips and salsa-but not this one. Again, did not expect it to be the same. What we did not expect were the strange flavor combos. The "carne" burrito did have ground beef in it. However it also had green olives and...peanuts??? The chicken enchiladas were ok, except that they did not have any enchilada sauce or any other sauce on it, just some melted cheese. The beer was good, however. read more

I came here with one of my American girlfriends and my son for a couple of drinks and some finger food on a Wednesday evening. We got a nice table on the patio and were offered an English and a German menu right away, so we were off to a good start. Unfortunately, things went downhill from here. Let's start with the food & beverages: Over the course of our visit, we ordered two rounds of drinks from their HH specials - a couple mojitos, some strawberry drink (I forgot the name) - as well as orange juice for my son. The adult drinks, while tasting OK, were really watered down. - I hate it when places skimp on things during HH. For food, we ordered Chips y Salsa picante, guacamole which also came with chips as well as the Tamales Vallarta. Chips, salsa and guacamole tasted fine although I have had better. The tamales were very disappointing. They did not taste great and there was barely any chicken in them. Continuing with the service now: First of all, it was SLOW! Secondly, it was absolutely weird because of our server! A blonde guy in his 20s and his attitude was severely lacking. I have no idea what the his problem was, but he would give us weird looks when we were discussing our drink and food choices in a mix of German and English and he was positively annoyed when I asked for a couple of alternative dips for the chips since the salsa was too spicy for my son (and he also hates avocado lol). The rest of the time, the guy would just hang in the background when he was not busy with another table and look at us with a strange expression. Really annoying, dude! I went here with my co-workers yesterday. I have to say the food is great and so are the drinks, especially during happy hour! I had fajitas con pollo and strawberry margaritas (which were to die for!!). Unfortunately I missed the opportunity to take pictures of my food/drinks, because I was too engaged in the conversation. It is quite pricy but since the food & drinks were great, I guess I should have no reason to complain, though I have to say, the service was a little slow - considering how busy it was, she was still very attentive and really tried to do her best. read more

I like Joe Pena's for its good TexMex food, the reasonable prices, and the great service I've seen there now continously the several times I went. The atmosphere is usually a bit loud and cozy (way too many tables) but after the first pitcher of margharita you'll enjoy it. The crowd's mixed mostly out of students, profs, and suits. The Texan Chicken Asada is my favorite! Reminds me of home :). read more

Joe Penas is a small German Tex-Mex chain with maybe a dozen loctaions. Unsurprisingly, it doesn't really compare to good Tex-Mex restaurants in the States but is similar to various Tex-Mex chains in food quality (somewhere between Chi-Chis and Tumbleweed). I had some Cajun style Red Snapper which didn't exactly seem like it was shipped from the coast yesterday. But basically for a E16 main, what can you expect? Marguerita's were well mixed. Otherwise they have the usual iterations of burritos, fajitas, etc. Guacamole needed seasoning (you'd think they'd get that right at least). Service was a tad slow but they were obviously short-handed so I won't be too judgemental it can happen. I'll give them kudos on atmospherealthough you won't feel like you're in Mexico, the decor is nicely done so could be a good date place. All in all, OK Tex-Mex for German standards. Not overly expensive. You wouldn't be embarrrassed to go there on a first date. read more

Overpriced for what it is. They have a fajitas day (all you can eat for about 15eur), which doesn't work when there is a fair in the city. This is fxx Frankfurt, so there are fairs all year long. Anyhow friendly staff but sometimes do not pay attention. Asked whether the dish of the day had cheese because I don't eat any; she said there was; what comes ? A fried dish filled with melted cheese. Another waitress removes my cutleries before my new dish comes to me... 13,5eur for 2TBS of rice w lettuce salad ins sweet supermarket dressing and grilled turkey is overrated. Y'all. I wanted to love this. Living in Germany means you crave great Mexican- Tex Mex, Baja Mex, Michigan Mex, ANY Mexican! Unfortunately this place fell incredibly short. We were hopeful when we ordered the pitcher of margaritas- Cali style and definitely good. The chips were authentic enough as was some of the decor but that's where it ended. We ordered guacamole prepared tableside, close enough. My main was the tamales; dang was I hopeful for tamales! It was served by the kindest Server. But. the tamales. Are. Not. Tamales. They are served in a corn husk but the unmistakable scent of curry wafted into my nose when I opened the inedible husk. Don't get me wrong. I love some curry and Indian food. But I'm at Mexican restaurant. I wanted Mexican. I choked one down but decided I would just "pretend" to be full of those curry "tamales" and order a side of rice so I wouldn't be a rude American. I order a side of Mexican rice. Guess what?? I sniff. It also has curry in it! I dump the salsa on it to hide the curry flavor but I just can't. I can't. I'm hungry. If you want Indian food, there's a place close by. If you want Mexican, hit Chipotle. Ya there's a Chipotle here and I wish we would've went there instead. Food ick. Drinks yum. Almost full on a Friday night with an array of well dressed good looking people. Table was fine with a menu in English an a waiter that spoke English too. Our food looked great and tasted good but the temperature was luke warm. 6 Euro for a 2 person bottle (750-1000ml?) of water. All the regular dishes were 12-15E. Nice place for a fun date. read more

Tasty foods, nice cocktails and friendly service in the most of the times. Seating is crowded and background noise/music is high. It is a place making people want to go back again but not to sit for long. read more

My wire and I ate here tonight. The food was very good. I really liked the combinations of different flavors and the presentation of the food. The service was a little slow, but not bad considering how busy it was. The restaurant takes reservations, but we were able to walk on without one. I would love to eat here again and hope to do so on this trip. read more

Pretty good for Mexican food around this area. The margaritas was really good. Service was quick and attentive. I ordered the fajitas and they were pretty good for Frankfurt- so definitely try those out. read more
