Joe's Bakery is a neighborhood staple. I was nearby and remembered this bread I love from there but alas it wasn't meant to be. I had not arisen as early as other birds this morning. I settled for this pistachio croissant who was eyeing me from the counter as soon as I approached. I also rescued a slice of walnut loaf, which might contain banana, per one of the two friendliest bakery attendants I've ever encountered. Joe's is that bakery you come to when you're having parties, or for a daily breakfast staple. They'll always have something delectable for your office or holiday party contribution. This neighborhood bakery has been around for a very long time. Sadly, I didn't find them until recently when I was on a search for a lemon meringue pie for a friend's birthday. I called over a dozen bakeries and found none offering this specific pie. Finally, I called Joe's Bakery and they said they can make a fresh one with a day's notice. Though I appreciated finding the pie, I have to admit that it was way too sweet, maybe because the sugar was meant to balance the extreme tartness. If I ever order lemon meringue pie again, I will ask them to trim the tartness a bit and cut the sugar by half. Other items from the shop that I have tried include a very good rainbow cookies, some decent bread, and their not so great pignoli cookies. Service is always nice and friendly, so I plan to keep coming back to find what they do well. read more

To the Management, You're becoming the talk of Maspeth, Ridgewood, and Middle Village--and not in a good way. The cookies are often melted, and when it's 90°F outside and 85°F inside the store, it's simply unacceptable. I will not be returning until the air conditioning issue is fixed. Maybe you don't need loyal customers anymore, but people notice these things. At this rate, someone else will open an Italian bakery with fresh Italian cookies like you used to have, and many customers will gladly go there instead. I used to be a dedicated customer, but I'm very disappointed. P.S. Some of the girls working there are very rude and act as though they can treat customers however they want. I WISH I took a picture of my food to share but as soon as I got in the car it didn't last long. 10/10 pastries. I purchased 3 different items having no idea what they were but they were beautifully made and I'm pregnant so I eat with my eyes. I was craving some cannoli so I stopped by here. The bakery is in a busy stretch of the neighborhood and I found parking pretty close by. The bakery has a large selection of breads, pastries and other treats including various cakes and cookies. I got some cannolis and rainbow cookies. I also got a ricotta cookie to have right there. The ricotta cookie was so delicious, with a bit of lemon in it. I'm mad that I didn't get a few more of them too lol. Excellent service, very helpful staff. Randomly stumbled on this hidden gem. You walk in and it's your traditional classic old school Italian style bakery. Nowadays it's hard to find one of those that's actually good. Finally found an italian bakery in Queens, this place has everything, pastries, ( St. Joseph) ,cookies ( rainbows) , bread ( proscuitto) , pies, cakes......everything you would want in an italian bakery. My wife and I came here recently to get a cake for July 4th. We forgot to pick up on from our usual bakery and this was nearby our destination. It is pretty nice inside and the staff is very friendly and helpful. I went to the fridge wall and picked out a nice cake, luckily it was also in the display case. I got some sort of chocolate cake. I figure everyone likes chocolate right? HAHA I also got a tray of cookies in cellophane. Again, the person helping me was very very friendly. Absolutely no issues here! They even put a nice little plastic sign on it that said Happy Independence Day! When we finally started to enjoy our goodies, we were decently let down... The cookies were amazing! The rainbow cookies could have used some more almond paste, but otherwise all the cookies were pretty good. The cake seemed very very very dry.... Like maybe it was 3-4 days old. I know that places hate throwing things away, food waste sucks etc... But you hate to be the recipient of that old cake. The frosting was chocolatey, and pretty solid, but the sponge cake inside was either old or over baked. Would we try them again? Probably. Maybe it was just a bad experience. If we are ever needing a cake in the area again, we would probably give them another shot. Good luck with parking on the avenue hahahaha!!! All in all, a decent bakery. I went in for a specific item (a three layer chocolate mousse) and was given the incorrect one (which I discovered when I got home. It was a chocolate mousse cake I believe) so I called and let them know and was told to come back to be given a new one (a thirty minute walk for me--I don't have a car). Once I returned, I was charged again for the new item I had spoken to them over the phone about (I had also decided to buy something else). It was mended because I pointed it out, but I would've liked to have seen some communication amidst the employees about the fact I was coming in (had my server not been the one to answer the phone and honor the new item). Would've been nice to have been returned the difference of the item that had been initially given to me that I hadn't asked for too (it was more expensive). I'm assuming it wasn't employees best day but service was just disappointing. They didn't even seem to know their own menu items which was why this back and forth happened in the first place. I had asked for this triple layer and was told they didn't have it when there was an entire tray full. In any case, the cake was dry and stale, and the raspberry was either bruised or rotting. There is a lovely, versatile and charming employee named Daniella who is one of the most kindest individuals I have come across. She knows how to treat everyone with utmost respect and sincere affection, regardless of age or presentation. She is incredibly patient and everyone seems to know the cashiers as well as bakers, fostering a rare sense of community. When you meet individuals like her, it is easy to have an incentive to return and try more products. Delicious!!! We had a special order cake made at the very last minute for my husband's 65th birthday. They were extremely accommodating -- ordered at 10 a.m. and was ready to be picked up for party at 5:30 pm. It was one of the best cakes I have ever eaten....it was a huge hit at his celebration dinner. Me and my girlfriend stopped into try there rainbow cookies and butter cookies. The rainbow cookies were amazing and just how I like them! They are refrigerated and have chocolate on the top and the bottom. The butter cookies were very good except the pistachio one. I never saw them before so I thought I would give it a try as I love pistachios. It was very bland and I could not taste the flavor at all. The staff all wear masks and are very nice and patient. They number the cookies to make the ordering process so much more simple. The prices are very reasonable too! read more

For 6-7 years, this was my favorite bakery. The food is very good. I even took some of their items to Long Island, Brooklyn, and Vermont to share with friends, family and my students. I often went here when I wasn't feeling well for some comfort food. However, last Sunday, when I wasn't feeling well, I called up to ask what time they were closing. The young woman who answered the phone said, "5 o'clock." I immediately rushed out of my home and got to the bakery by 4:55. The gate was already pulled down over the window. I knocked on the door and the young woman said, "We're closed." I told her that I called, that she told me they closed at 5, and showed her the time on my phone. Her response? A smug, "We're closed." No "Sorry" for the inconvenience or for telling me on the phone they were open till 5 but closing early. No empathy whatsoever. When I said, "I'll write this on Yelp," her response was, "Ok. Goodbye!" It was clear all she cared about was leaving early. I hope getting out of there 10 minutes early was worth ruining a 6-7 year business relationship. It looks like a neighborhood gem, located on a business street of a residential area. I got some assorted cookies and it was all fresh and not too sweet. My favorite is the pine nut tart like pastry with marzipan, the like thump print cookie with a berry jam and silver almonds. And the staff was friendly and quick. Cakes are delicious, however you have to make sure it's fresh. My daughter who goes these a lot, had company and ordered pasties for desert. They were STALE. She was embarrassed and upset to say the least. This is unacceptable, they made good but she wasn't NOT able to server them to her company!!!!! I also went to pick up a birthday cake, and the girl messed up the writing when putting it in the box. She was taking a long time and I HAD TO ASK her if something was wrong. My husband called to order a birthday cake with lemon filing and buttercream icing. The girl who answered the phone, snapping her gum like Jeanette from Canarsie, said "I dunno if we do dat, duh bakuh ain't here you gotta call back," and click. The idiot hung up. Formerly known as Catalano Bakery, Joe's Bakery now occupies the space and similar to the previous ownership does a marvelous job with pastries and bread. The large reach in coolers remain somewhat vacant with some frozen profiterole's and a few ice cream cakes. Although I do enjoy the typical Italian cookie tray options of Pignoli, Biscotti,Pizelle, Cucidati and Butter Cookies, which Joe's does quite well, I am usually shopping for the wonderful breads. Olive bread, the Pain Rustique, Twista, Semolina and many more are sitting in the front of the store on wooden racks in full display to all passers by. The service is great, staffed most of the time by Joanne who is a 70 year old dynamo who has been working at both locations for twenty plus years. Its nice to see and hear the older Italian folks speaking in the native tongue using accelerated hand gestures to make their order known. A nice step back in time. read more
