The best ribs in Arizona by far, there is no competition whatsoever. The only thing is that they're really busy all the time, which is expected because their food is honestly that good, but parking can be hard to find as well. This isn't much of a problem when you're going with some friends but it starts to get annoying when you have children who need to be carried and old family members who can't handle the walk without a break every once in a while. I do also wish the place was more wheelchair accessible, my dad can only eat outside if he does eat here with us but everything is so tight packed that it's hard for a wheelchair to maneuver around tables. read more

Pleasantly surprised. I have to start with the simple fact that I hate fast casual dining or cafeteria style establishments and I'm not a huge fan of barbecue, so there. I said it, completely bias review. So needless to say I walked in expecting the worst. On a whim to find somewhere similar to a place my husband visited in Texas, we gave Joe's a shot. We're Gilbert alum and have walked by a million times, so it was a natural suggestion. We arrived a little before 5 in anticipation of a huge dinner rush to find plenty of seating. Starting off on a good foot there. The line moved quickly, the food was fresh, options were plentiful and seemed to be a pretty good value for what was tendered. I had the brisket sandwich and unbeknownst to me smothered my Sammy in the "I dare you hot" or whatever the hottest sauce was. Which by it's self is terrifying, but smothered on my delicious slab of meat was delightful and flavorful. Mac & cheese hit the spot, not the best ever, but certainly not the worst. Would order again. Cornbread was by far exceptional, a vehicle for butter, yes please. My guys had the 4 meat platters expecting to finish it all, which was false. Enjoyed having the to-go containers at my disposal as to not bother any servers. I loved the sauce and condiment bar, especially the pickled onions. All in all, I'm was so impressed, can't wait to go back this fall and sit outside. I have been coming here for years after an initial free birthday offer where they give you $10 worth of food every year on your birthday. I've come here with friends and family and it is phenomenal. This is a spot near my house that I always see, but never go to. I ordered a salad. I know, what kind of sick person would order a salad from a BBQ place?! But I wanted something light and not so carb-y and their salad sounded good. I opted for the turkey as my protein addition and it was perfect. The flavor was amazing and the meat was tender. The container was jam packed too, so you're definitely getting your money's worth. Here's the thing though, they cut their lettuce in these tiny square pieces that are tough to pick up with a fork. I had to get a spoon and it was really weird for me. My roommate ordered the ribs. I tried some and we both agreed it was kinda dry. This was painful for us because there were such great reviews. Maybe Joe was just having an off-day? It happens. Despite the dry texture, the flavor was good. I liked the sauce because it was kinda spicy and I'm all about the heat. I'm not sure what it was called, but I definitely recommend the hot bbq sauce. Been looking for bbq places in the chandler/Mesa for awhile and I really wasn't sure where I'd go, after a lot of thinking I came across this place and let me say I'm pretty happy I chose it for my first in the area. The portions of meat were a pretty good size but the side was kinda small however they have options to get bigger sizes which is cool. What I got was the meat sampler plate with a side of macaroni and cornbread, it also came with a roll which I didn't even know about lol but the meat was great! The brisket was perfect,the ribs were perfectly seasoned that I could eat them as is,the turkey which I substituted instead of chicken was pretty good however it was a little soggy in my opinion but no biggy, and then the pulled pork was decent but that's only because I'm not much of a pulled pork fan to be fair. The cornbread was soooooo good I wish I would've got another one lol but that pretty much wraps it up for my experience at joes bbq. I had passed Joe's a couple of times back in college but never really had the urge to come as it was so far away from where I lived and downtown Gilbert was not as poppin as it is today. Since moving to Chandler, I had been itching to try their fresh BBQ food and decided to come with family who were in town for a visit. The funny thing about this place that I can't get over is the insane line on the inside of the restaurant and the wait times people put up with to order from inside. Seriously people, there's an express to-go section outside that has little to no line and you get your food soooo much faster! Still want to eat there and not take it to go? That's fine, they have no problem with you staying to enjoy your meal! The only difference is paper bag/wrap vs. being on a plate, which I could care less about. If the food is good, that's all that matters. I ordered the jumbo sandwich which included chopped brisket/pulled pork and a side of potato salad. I have been to other BBQ establishments in CA and AZ but nobody does it quite like these guys. The meat is juicy and easy to eat--not too chewy but also not hard & dry. I tried this place on July 4th. I figure it's BBQ time. I love the homemade root beer. Tasty. No high fructose corn syrup. It's made with pure cane sugar. Ordered the BBQ Sampler Platter. The beef brisket and pork ribs were pretty good. The sides were edible. So here's the breakdown: Beef Brisket: 4.5 stars Pork Ribs: 4.5 Pulled Pork: 2.5 Chicken: 3.5 BBQ Beans: 2.5 Cheesy Potatoes: 2.5 I saw an old man walking (barely) looking after the place. Making sure everything was in place. I asked him where we leave the dishes. He said, "Just leave it where it is. We've been doing it that way for 20-25 years." Must be one of the founders. He seems like a nice man. Staff here seems nice too. Wait is only 5 minutes so not bad. Overall a good experience. After years of dining out in Arizona while I lived here, Joe's BBQ is my one required stop every time I'm back to visit. I grew up in Gilbert so I've seen Downtown Gilbert grow a lot from almost nothing to the hot spot it is now but Joe's has always been at the center of the action (and for good reason). You can't get within half a mile of this place without smelling it first! My mouth is watering just thinking about it. All the food here is incredible and that's what keeps me (and the line of people usually stretching out the door) coming back. I love the ribs when I'm feeling up to it and don't mind getting a little messy but my go-to is a BBQ sandwich with either the pulled pork or chopped brisket. The meats are all pecan-smoked and perfectly tender and the chopped brisket is even cooked in their signature BBQ sauce so the flavor is in every bite. They also have a station where you can get more BBQ sauce or Spicy BBQ sauce and pour it all over everything (I prefer to mix the two so it's got a kick but it's not too spicy). In addition to the all the delicious meat options, the sides are a standout as well. The mac and cheese is my all-time favorite, with plenty of gooey cheesiness (totally a word) and a flaky topping, and the cornbread with honey butter really hits the spot. The cheesy potatoes and BBQ pit beans are very popular as well! As far as drinks go, Joe's makes their own homemade root beer and lemonade which are both a refreshing complement to the smoky barbecue. And if you have room, go for the root beer cake or chocolate chip cookie: both desserts are a simply amazing way to end the meal. Not only is their food unparalleled around here but the customer service is second to none and they even give free meals on your birthday, in addition to a few days every year where they serve free lunches to everyone. It's cafeteria-style so you wait in line, get your drink, then order your food and they give it to you before paying at the cash register. We also use the catering department once a year for our company party's. Again, amazing service all the way around. The rating is a value-based rating. Two things to know: 1 The food is OUTSTANDING 2: They are downright STINGY with how little food you get. It's like going to Flancer's in that regard. That's another place I love, but I rarely ever eat there either because I'm not rich. I don't know what's up with the portion control these days but when I pay $13 for a sandwich and it's the size of the typical hamburger bun you get in the store I feel flat-out short changed. I would need to order two possibly three of these sandwiches to feel like a got a meal instead of just a tasty snack. I'm glad I didn't buy the feast for $60. I can only imagine how little is in that. The main courses and side dishes are awesome. They have a nice selection of bottled drinks as well. Pros * Joe's BBQ is consistently great. Just delicious. * Their sides and salads are delicious and a really good option for family members who don't eat BBQ. My partner is GF & dairy free and still found items she loved on the menu (salads and the beet side dish) * Their service is very good. Friendly people. Yummy BBQ. Cafeteria style dining. So glad I stopped in and decided to give this place a try. The beef brisket was juicy and tender and the pork ribs fell off the bone. I will be back to try their other meats! I did fall in love with their brisket beans. Nice hearty chunks of meat mixed in with the sweet and savory taste of beans. Can't get any better than that. Loved the brisket! It was good. A little dry at points but we did get there at like 745pm. Cheesy potatoes were okay but heavy in the green pepper. The cornbread was bomb and the frosting//butter was delicious. I got the root beer cake but was too full to eat it. I did indulge in the ice cream in chocolate dip, which was fire! I'll definitely be back but hopefully brisket will be a bit more moist:) read more

I am going to start out with that if it wasn't for the nice folks up at the food station I'd be giving the food some a 2 star. I ordered the brisket due to the accolades in the previous reviews but mercy, and I feel bad about saying this but it was kind of awful. It had almost raw appearance in one part but then completely burnt to carbon on quite a bit of the meat. The baked beans were ok but the best part of my meal was the corn bread. If it had been actually warm, it could be one of the best I've ever had. Since we are in the subject of temperature, everything was a bit on the cold side. Like I mentioned earlier, the folks working here were super nice. No, I didn't bring this up to the manager as he was always super busy and the place was a mad house. The outside seating is overrun by kids, which is fantastic if you have kids under the age of 7-8ish? If you're don't or your kids are older then I'd stick to inside dining. JOES! How do I love thee? I have been to Joe's more times than...you can shake a stick at...? Whatever cliché you wanna use...I remember first being recommended to try their pulled pork and cheesy potatoes several decades ago and I have been hooked ever since. I also love to get their brisket -- sliced or chopped -- and have brought many people here over the years who have been as enthusiastic with their food as I have been; whether it's tearing into jackfruit, or getting yourself all sauced-up with the ribs, it's all good. I will admit that the prices are a little higher and the portions are a little smaller these days due to inflation/shrinkflation, but that hasn't seemed to deter anyone when the food is so good; take a walk around the back of the building sometime to breathe in that fantastic BBQ air. Joe's has made themselves such a staple of Downtown Gilbert that you would think they've actually been there since the Great Depression (the building was - not the restaurant), and hopefully, they will remain there for many, many more BBQ-filled days. This was my favorite place yet eat for years. Sadly that is on past. The food quality has gone down hill and the can't seem to get a order right no matter what we order. Recently got a diner of a pitiful looking greasy fatty pulled pork. The really sad part we had ordered sliced beef brisket because the pulled pork is just nasty now. Sadly this is not the first time either but has become the norm.
