The soup dumplings, Xiao Long Bao, are the star of the show here and an obvious must. Really enjoyed the Eggplant in garlic sauce, had a bit of a kick but nice balance of flavor. Chicken with Black Mushrooms & Bamboo Shoots thoroughly enjoyed. Cold sesame noodle just ok. Soup could have been better - needed to be warmer. All other dishes (see pics) were very good. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Clean and cheerful place.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Service was excellent. Water filled constantly, plates cleared and changed as needed. Fast service but never pushy. Prices fair. CASH ONLY

We visited here for lunch while in NYC. The scallion pancakes were some of the best we've ever had, soup dumplings were delicious with a delicate wrap and good quality pork, just the right amount of soupy broth inside. The kung pao chicken was also amazing. Could be spicier, but we also didn't ask for extra chili so that could be on us. The chicken was perfectly sticky and tasty. Fresh. The only miss for us was the potstickers. They were just OK. Everything else was amazing. The service was attentive and friendly. The restaurant was quite busy, but we were seated for 4 almost immediately which was quite surprising. Lucky us. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Bathrooms were clean and well maintained.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] I'd go back. The fried rice arriving at the table next door and soup bowls looked great. I'd like to try if we visit again.

This place blew up because of their soup dumplings and they live up to the hype! They were pretty good and full of soup. Although, I think their jelly fish dish with the garlic green beans was so good. I actually prefer those two dishes over the soup dumplings. The service was quick. We were sat down immediately and our food came out fast. I think this is an only cash establishment, so please remember to grab cash before coming here!! [[HIGHLIGHT]]The ambiance wasn't too bad either. It's near Chinatown and financial district.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]]

To me the soup dumplings and everything were super enjoyable. The peking duck while you had to wait long in my opinion met standards across the board and was a delight to eat. Everything hear was pretty consistent and a hearty meal.

Came here just for their crab and pork soup dumplings and they were truly the best soup dumplings I've ever had. Each one is decently sized and comes out with sooo much soup inside. Every dumpling was bursting with soup and flavor. We got seated right away and food came out fairly fast. All the other food here also looked really yummy. This place is cash only as well

The soup dumplings were pretty big and absolutely loaded with soup. The beef noodle soup was pretty flavorful but the noodles were a little overcooked

Hands down the BEST shanghai style sweet red bean pancake (豆沙窩餅) in NYC!! Joe's Shanghai has long been a staple in Chinatown, and my family's go-to spot for big gatherings and holiday celebrations. Over the years, we've tried so many dishes on their menu, from their old Chinatown location to the current one. The food and service have never disappointed. To me, the star of the show is definitely their sweet red bean pancake (豆沙窩餅) and sweet fermented rice rice balls (酒釀丸子). The pancake is served warm and literally packed to the brim with red bean paste. I always make sure to save room for dessert every time. I'd highly recommend their seafood dishes. I grew up loving shanghai style sautéed baby shrimp (清炒蝦仁). It's actually a deceptively tricky dish to get right, as you need wok hei and just the right balance of flavor. But they totally nail it here. If I have to nitpick, their dishes are quite oily sometimes, which is expected in an old style chinese restaurant. It could be a pain to wait for a table at peak hours as they don't take reservations.

After reading mixed reviews, I decided to stop in for lunch and give it a try. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The ambiance was casual but nice and the staff were friendly as well as attentive.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] I ordered the crab and pork soup dumplings, pan fried dumplings, spring rolls, pan fried noodles with shrimp and General Tso's chicken. Everything came quickly and I must say it was very good! Portions are generous and served family style. I especially liked their pan fried dumplings and soup dumplings, delish! It was quite busy during the lunch rush but they do seat you quickly. Be forewarned they are a cash only establishment but they do have ATM machines available. Lastly, they include the tip in your bill so you need not try and figure out how much to add on. I thoroughly enjoyed my lunch here!

Dumplings, fried rice, and scallion pancake.... That's it, that's all. Quick service. Great service. Cash only. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Always a vibe with locals and tourists there for the good stuff![[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] This place never disappoints and I make sure I visit every time I visit Chinatown.

Came here around 5:15PM and when we arrived, we waited for 15 minutes to be seated. We looked at the menu while we were waiting. Atmosphere: 8/10 [[HIGHLIGHT]]Not very clean. The floor was dirty with food and it seems they couldn't clean up because how business it gets here.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]The restaurant has a modern vibe, neutral color, and casual.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Food: 9/10 We ordered the crab and pork soup dumpling, shrimp fried rice, and spicy salt and pepper squid. Although it was basic food choices it was all delicious. The soup dumpling felt like home once you take that first bite. I love adding the ginger slices from the soy sauce into the dumpling, it adds extra flavor to it. The shrimp fried rice was cooked well, not over cooked shrimp. The star of the show for all of us was the spicy salt and pepper. Perfectly coated batter and not overly cooked squid. It has a good crunch and flavor. Service: 8/10 Food came out at different time which kind of sucked but it didn't bother us too much. They were quick with getting us water and giving up plates/utensils once we were seated. Our waiter was kind enough to give us a new plate after our soup dumpling. I would come back whenever I'm in New York. Definitely worth checking out if you are in the area or want some good authentic Chinese food.

Joe's Shanghai is a classic. Most people will recommend it for New York visit and I get why. I've been a few times and the food quality is consistent, [[HIGHLIGHT]]there's much more seating here than most other places in the area[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]], and the prices are reasonable. The service here could be a bit better because it took a while for us to get our food, so not a place to go to if you're in a rush. This time around, we stopped in and just got the crab and pork soup dumplings and the scallion pancake. The soup dumplings are perfect. They're filled to the max, the flavor is balanced between the proteins, and the skin is just the right thickness that it's not dense if you eat the whole thing. The scallion pancake was standard, crispy and not particularly flavorful, but a great starter.

    Sauteed String Bean

Rating 7/10. I've been here a handful of times. Fast and friendly service per usual. We keep ordering their stir fried rice cakes because the chew and wok hei are so on point every time. Soup dumplings don't skimp on the pork and crabmeat filling and the wrapper isn't too thin or too thick. We added string beans to get in our greens for the day. The sauce was delicious, though I noticed it didn't evenly coat the string beans. One string bean had flavor, then the next didn't. It was some sorta string bean sauce roulette and I didn't enjoy that. It was also kinda diabolical that the strings beans costed more than the other dishes oof. Note** I didn't know tips were already included until I glanced at the receipt. The servers did not notify us about this. Check your bill!

This spot is a must if you're in Chinatown. Honestly you can't go wrong with anything you order here everything hits ! The service was nice, the food came out in a normal amount of time and this place gets packed, which tells you all you need to know. Even with the crowd, the inside was clean and comfortable. This spot is a 10/10 The flavors are on another level. I swear nothing in California compares. New York food just hits different and I miss it. If you're in this area, do yourself a favor and please stop by. Your only mistake will be not ordering more food. Trust me.. come hungry.

Service is super efficient, to order food you use a tablet at the table and order drinks from the servers. The dining room is beautiful and kind of peaceful. I saw quite a few large parties so this spot seems good for groups. We started with the truffle pork soup dumplings which might be the best I've ever had. The soup was the perfect temperature and so so flavorful. I would come back just for the dumplings. The mapo tofu and sauteed green beans came next, and we ordered two sides of plain white rice which came in a generously sized bowl. Portion sizes are large here, we had plenty of leftovers. We went for more familiar dishes, which were so well done, but all the different dishes flying through the dining room looked incredible. Will definitely be coming back to explore the rest of the menu.

And they also had enough room to seat us without a reservation. Their Mapo Tofu is the star, bridging affordability and savory. Like many of their dishes, it's very, very flavorful and spicy, with the traditional mapo numbing sensation. I'd strongly recommend ordering it with rice. Their mushroom rice dish was also succulent and tasty, and I'd also say it's a great alternative if you prefer less spicy entrees. I do think they're a bit on the pricey side, but their food is worth the cost. Be aware that, again, their dishes are quite rich in flavor.

We wandered over here after visiting the Empire State Building; it was only a five minute walk away! We went after watching the sunset, so around 8-ish, and were pleasantly surprised we didn't have to wait for a table. The atmosphere was bright and lively, but not too much to bring our seven-year-old. We ordered: PORK DUMPLINGS-- best thing we ordered. My. Goodness. The broth was perfectly seasoned and silky. Was always a little sad after the last bit of soup from each dumpling was slurped. ;) Meat inside was tender and flavorful and the wrapper wasn't too thin or thick. Just the right thickness to keep the soup inside until you were ready, but not so thick that it was too chewy or distracting from the contents. Also ordered, the SPICY BEEF DUMPLINGS as recommended by our server. They were yummy. Tasty soup and beef had a deeper flavor. Not too spicy. Next time, we will probably just order extra pork dumplings or try something new. We ordered the SCALLION PANCAKES. I prefer my scallion pancakes thinner. These were a lot like the thickness of a dense pita. Still enjoyed them-- still a nice texture that was both soft and crispy, perfectly greasy, and flavorful. CRISPY CHILI CHICKEN (or something like that) was good but nothing special. Had some heat but not too spicy. CUCUMBER SALAD-- was a nice cold addition to the meal. Loved the sesame oil, just wish there was more, as well as more flavor. We ended up pouring a little soy sauce on top and that helped. I thought it was nice to chase a bite of crispy chili chicken with a bite of cucumber. WHITE RICE-- we ordered three orders of rice that was perfectly prepared, but way too much for three adults. Not complaining, but each bowl would have probably been enough for two adults. Can't wait to return!

There was no apology or offer to give us a discount for their misstep. Also, when we showed up for dinner there was a 30 minute wait and one had to stand in the hallway during that wait. Next time we'll swing by earlier to get the check-in code to find out how long the wait is in advance. The good news is that our first three items came out pretty quickly after ordering; and the place is very fast with the turnover.

Shredded crispy duck is lean, crisp (living up to its name) and in my estimation, perfect! A half order is $33 and comes with crepes and what I guess is thin-cut celery and hoisin sauce. Our other two dishes merit maybe four stars. I had high hopes for prawns with black bean sauce and minced pork, but there was little pork and the dish was under-seasoned. Beaten egg white, a component of the sauce, was almost raw and when separated from the black beans, runny and unappealing. When I inquired about 'vegetarian delight,' our server suggested creating our own dish. Four sautéed vegetables for $16. I went with bok choy, broccoli, mushrooms and fried tofu. I asked for a flavorful sauce. I believe we got garlic, but it was too subtle, not garlicky enough.. Service is on-the-ball. Ambience is lovely. And Saturday night, hours before the dreaded snowstorm, the restaurant was busy. Reservations recommended.
