Beautiful bridge and an iconic symbol of Cincinnati. I had always wanted to see this bridge up close. In Eastern PA, we have the Riegelsville Bridge which spans the Delaware River built in 1904 by the wire rope and engineering firm of John A. Roebling's Sons Co., based in Trenton, New Jersey. Pretty cool to have that connection now that I've been to Cincinnati! The riverfront on the Cincy side is set up nicely, the park areas, stadiums, view of the skyline, serpentine wall, Carol Ann's Carousel, Statue of Cincinnatus, etc. All of those areas are in close proximity to the bridge. I took my son on a drive across the bridge to Covington and the following day we walked half way across before the Eagles-Bengals game. The bridge offers perfect views of the skyline and river! We are so glad we got to see this historic engineering landmark! A Cincy gem... As a kid driving through Cincinnati, I never appreciated my surroundings. Been over this bridge hundreds of times growing up and never paid attention. As an adult, and as I grow older, I find myself stopping to take in the views and truly take a minute to appreciate everything. I no longer live in Ohio and all those things I once took for granted...I now appreciate and enjoy more than ever. I used to cross over this like it was just a bridge...and some folks probably still look at this as "just a bridge" to get them from one place to the other. Yes, it's a bridge...but wow...she sure is pretty! And wow...if she could talk! I implore you to "take in" the beauty of this bridge, respect all that she has seen and her age...and really enjoy your next trip across this bridge. The bridge opened on 1 Dec 1866 and has a 100′ clearance below and crosses over the Ohio River. 1866...think about that! Plus, this was the test version of the Brooklyn Bridge. Although other bridges have been built, it remains the main bridge crossing over the Ohio River from Covington, KY to Cincinnati, OH to this day. You can drive or walk across it. It is a fun way to stay and/or visit on one side and visit the other just by walking. During the day you can see it in full glory and it is ornate. By night it is lit up and is absolutely breathtaking. You may be wondering about parking...there is a lot of parking near the bridge and across the street. Multiple parking garage entrances can be seen/found. Yes, you must pay for parking, but it is reasonable. It is also within walking distance of both stadiums and quite a few hotels on both sides of the bridge. Joining the cities of Covington Kentucky with Cincinnati Ohio, the Roebling bridge opened in 1866 and at the time was the longest suspension bridge in the world. Designed by John A. Roebling, he went on to build the famous Brooklyn Bridge in 1883 and the Ojuela Bridge in Durango in 1898. It did serve streetcars at one time and would have been capable of supporting the subway but the city never completed that project. Today, it has pedestrian traffic that is much used for parking in Kentucky and walking to sporting events in Cincinnati and it has an 11 ton weight limit for vehicles. The bridge is active in 2023 having just finished a rehabilitation project in 2021 and I hope to see many more years of this stunning and beautiful bridge. It is especially photogenic at night. This John A. Roebling Bridge is a terrific highlight when exploring the downtown Cincinnati area. Just walking beside Smale Riverfront Park, the bridge stands suspended over the Ohio River. In my opinion, it's vintage Cincinnati, and definitely an opportunistic setting for picture taking. I believe John Roebling Bridge connects Kentucky with Ohio and best of all, it's accommodative to pedestrians with a walkway offering panoramic perspectives of Cincinnati's downtown skyline. You don't even half to walk the entire bridge for great views. Just taking the staircase up to the top of the bridge, you're eye level with some of Cincinnati's tallest skyscrapers along with catching a clear glance (for all you sports fans) of Paycor Football Stadium, home of the NFL's Cincinnati Bengals. I had a few hours before attending a Cincinnati Reds baseball game back over the summertime, and looking for things to do, coming over to this bridge was a worthwhile way to pass the time. And then if you're strolling around Riverfront Park, you can capture the length of the entire bridge in the background. Boats leisurely float along the Ohio River and pass underneath the bridge. It's a great chance to soak up all that is Cincinnati. And right nearby here at the bridge and Riverfront Park is another attraction...the "Sing the Queen City" Sign is a playful photo moment. You can't miss it when hanging out in downtown Cincy. In the end, if you're visiting Cincinnati and trying to discover what makes the city unique, this John A. This suspension bridge spans the Ohio River between downtown Cincinnati, Ohio and Covington, Kentucky. When opened in December, 1866, it was the longest (1,057' main span) suspension bridge in the world. Interestingly. It was overtaken in 1883 by Roebling's most famous bridge -- the Brooklyn Bridge, at 1,595.5' Visiting Cincinnati for the first time, we started in this part of the city. There was easy pay parking at the Central Riverfront Garage, which gives easy access to the Underground Railroad Museum, the Smale Riverfront Park, restaurants, stadiums, and the John A Roebling Bridge. Today (May, 2023), the bridge handles both automobile and pedestrian traffic in both directions. We walked back and forth across the bridge, enjoying the views of the Ohio River, the waterfront parks, and the city skylines. What a Cincy treasure! I'm surprised there aren't more reviews of this bridge. It's very reminiscent of bridges you see over the River Thames in London. Built in the 1800s, the bridge currently accommodates cars with a pedestrian walkway on both sides. The bright blue paint makes it striking in contrast to the Cincy city skyline. We thoroughly enjoyed our walk from Covington over to Cincy and back. On the Cincy side, you'll find a natural kids park, carousel and additional paths. On the Covington side you'll see an outdoor amphitheater and additional paved trails as well. Overall, a great spot to stretch to your legs. read more

It's a great bridge all shiny and fresh looking, that it's probably the most inconvenient means of crossing the river by motor carriage just enhances the funness and fitness for city life. by appearance you could almost expect that new-bridge smell... except it's 100 years older than I. nearly half a mile of open steel deck hanging some 65 feet above the river supported by massive cables strung from fancy stonework towers with a surprising amount of car traffic for a pedestrian bridge and quite a lot of truss-work for a suspension bridge... but hey, it's a pretty sight in the south-eastern midwest and who's counting? so enjoy the bridge but look both ways before crossing the river and don't stay to long in the roadway taking pictures. read more

This is one of many pretty awesome bridges in the Cincinnati area, and it's definitely pretty inspiring and beautiful. While Cincinnati has a whole bunch of good Bridges, this one is probably my favourite. It's golden and shining and gorgeous. One of the greatest bridges in the country? I would say so. Wow!! Opened January 1st, 1867. At that time, it was the longest suspension bridge in the world. We enjoyed the Roebling Suspension Bridge last month on a trip to beautiful Cincinnati. Our hotel was in Covington, KY, and the bridge was about a mile away. After a great breakfast, we walked to the bridge and crossed over from Kentucky to Ohio. So cool! The structure and architecture of the bridge are gorgeous. The surrounding of the historic Ohio River is majestic. The walk over took us to a vibrant Cincinnati riverfront, which included beautiful parks, bars, and restaurants. I had no idea we were going to have so much fun in Cincinnati. We took advantage of a beautiful morning and spent the majority of the day walking around downtown Cincinnati. We will definitely return in the near future and will do our best to take time out to walk over this beautiful, historic bridge. read more

I also used this bridge during my stay in Cincinatti in order to get to Covington, KY to visit the Saint Mary's Cathedral Basilica. It has been under repair for as long as I can remember (open for pedestrians only), but setting the maintenance issues aside, it is quite a magnificent-looking piece of architecture, and also an inimitably practical way to access the city. One can easily drive up to Northern Kentucky and walk into Cincinnati and its riverfront and stadiums, even taking the streetcar (which is free and nearby) to explore the city without ever driving to it. Hopefully they will eventually finish repairing it, but for now it's a very nice pedestrian bridge. read more

There is a fairly nice park with lots to do, and water spouts areas thru out for the all. Many amazing view points all over this area. The bridge was gorgeous and reminded me of the one in London, even tho its the brother of the Brooklyn Bridge. You must see the one in London to understand. Great views of the ballpark on the Ohio River. Free parking on the KY side, I found parking on the side of the street. Would love to see this at night, maybe next time. Beautiful suspension bridge that takes you into Cincinnati from Covington, Kentucky. What is even better is that they have pedestrian walkways at both sides so it makes crossing the Ohio even more of a delight. If you think this bridge looks a lot like the Brooklyn bridge, you would be right, considering the designer of the bridge, John Roebling, was the brainchild of this bridge and the one in Brooklyn. It is well constructed and has aged beautifully. The walk is easy and though it might be loud due to the vehicular traffic next to you, is quite safe. Absolutely a beautiful piece of architecture that stands out in the Cincinnati skyline! One side of the bridge is Ohio and the other side is Kentucky. Definitely best to park on the Kentucky side for free or cheap parking and just walk to the Ohio side. Believe it or not, this bridge was the longest suspension bridge in the world when it first opened in 1866! Just off on the Ohio side you can enjoy Smale Park, which is a great way to relax in Downtown Cincy! Lots of great views and scenery and great people watching as well! Plus you just have to walk along the bridge at least once to take in the fantastic views of the city, including Paul Brown Stadium and Great American Ballpark! Not much else that I can say that others have not already stated. Sister bridge to the Brooklyn Bridge, designed by the same architect/engineer. Pretty riverfront Park, lots of trails. In a nicer part of downtown, close to restaurants and the Freedom Center. Lots of parking nearby--they are currently building a new parking garage. Honestly, this is as impressive as the Brooklyn bridge, even if it is a little smaller. Nice, wide pedestrian path on both sides to walk/run, and easily accessible from either side of the river. There are a lot of cars that pass, so there is a "whoosh" and "hum" you'll hear. I hate this bridge. Ugh. Anyway.... When you live or are visiting a city that sits directly on a river, it sure is nice to be able to cross on foot. So for that the Roebling Bridge is great. It is like Louisville's 2nd Street bridge...for local traffic and pedestrians. As one might imagine from looking at it, it was designed by the same person as the Brooklyn Bridge (and this one came first). We were in town and using the bridge specifically for Blink. The bridge was shut down to automotive traffic, and was pedestrian only. On the way over to Covington, earlier in the evening...it took us maybe 10 minutes to cross. Later in the evening, it took us OVER ONE HOUR to come back to the Ohio side! This is probably more a complaint for Blink organizers/security on the bridge. But my annoyance and frustration are currently sitting firmly in correlation with the bridge. The closed off pedestrian lanes on both sides had visitors going in both directions, rather than having one side for one direction and the other side for the opposite direction. Which would seem a logical plan. But because it was flowing the way it was, there were long periods of zero movement...aside from the constant swaying of the bridge...and people running in to and pushing each other. There was some golf cart traffic on the bridge, but that just seemed like a slap in the face. Maybe even make both pedestrian sides go in the same direction and the central car lane be a flowing in the opposite direction....SOMEthing to not only maximize use of the space, but also prevent such people traffic jams. Also...don't be #ThosePeople at an event like this, who recognize someone going in the other direction and just stop to catch up and shoot the sh*t in the middle of the bridge...bringing everything to a grinding halt and being all-around entitled douche-nozzles, mmkay? Just keep it moving. Still....super great and convenient in general to have a pedestrian option to get from city downtown to quaint smaller city downtown. read more

As someone that is visiting from New York City this had a very familiar feel to it. I believe it is modeled somewhat after the iconic Brooklyn Bridge. Since the road is closed I got to walk the roadway where the cars are usually travelling and take a few nice shots from angles that you would not normally have due to on coming traffic. The Roebling Suspension Bridge connecting Cincinnati and Covington is one of our signature landmarks. It is an iconic symbol of Cincinnati/Covington. I was in college in South Carolina when I bought the album "Gentlemen" by the Afghan Whigs. As I was listening to the opening song, I was like, "HEY! That's the sound of driving over The Suspension Bridge!!". There is an unmistakable "hum" as you drive over the bridge, due to its driving deck is made up of a metal grid. If you look down out your window while driving over, you look right down to the Ohio River below. It closes during winter precipitation for that reason, salt falls right through. Great landmark, and historical monument, and I love that Hummm when driving over, or hearing others drive it while you are in a boat or walking it. read more

My 1700th Review The Roebling Bridge opened to pedestrian traffic exactly 149 years - 4 months - 25 days before I had the privilege to walk the entire span of just over 1,619 feet. There are few words that can give this bridge a deserving review since there has been so much said about this magnificent structure already. This bridge spanning the Ohio River has witnessed more history than any living person and precedes the more famous Brooklyn Bridge by more than 17 years and the most famous Golden Gate Bridge by more than 71 years. If only this bridge could talk the tales it could tell, more than 120,000 people walked across this bridge in the first three days of its opening in 1866 yes 1866 it's amazing that the same bridge built to replace the ferries that transported horse driven buggies and livestock now accommodates Maserati's and Corvettes, even though it was designed before any motorized vehicles were even dreamt of which says a lot about the integrity and engineering of this bridge. I've always had a fascination with suspension bridges, and this is a beautiful bridge. Of the three bridges connecting Cincinnati with Northern Kentucky that were visible from my hotel room this is the most majestic. The bridge has a striking resemblance to Roebling's Brooklyn Bridge in New York. Two brick towers stand tall with a pair of golden topped turrets and a flag pole on each tower. During my recent visit I made it a point to walk both sides of the bridge in order to capture the picturesque architectural grace of the structure and its scenic surroundings. This is my favorite bridge in the area. I'm not fond of walking across bridges over water, but this one doesn't bother me. The view is beautiful and serene. I recently had the rare opportunity to climb to the top of the bridge with my boyfriend and some friends. The Covington-Cincinnati Suspension Bridge Committee will organize small group climbs to the top of the bridge a couple of times during the year, for a price. Roebling, this bridge was once the world's longest bridge until Roebling's son' Brooklyn Bridge usurped the title years later. Visitors and locals alike should take the opportunity to stroll pedestrian walkways on the outskirts of this engineering wonder. The hum of the passing cars can be a bit intimidating, but the spectacularly unique views of the riverbanks and cityscapes of Cincinnati, Newport, Covington, and beyond are quite humbling. Some say the Ohio River might as well be an ocean, given the disparities between the north and south sides of the river. But with a connection like this, that gulf is not so large. read more

Not much more I can say that others have not already said. The John A. Roebling Suspension Bridge is a marvel and absolutely amazing. We had the opportunity to see it from above and up close. It's simply stunning and so close to everything in downtown, it's worth the hike. We also had the chance to get lots of photos. The history has been told, so I won't repeat it hear. I will say that one of the neat things about this area is there are 6 bridges crossing the Ohio River within a very short distance of each other. While this bridge is awesome, each of the bridges is unique and adds its own character to area. I've never just wanted to checkout bridge designs until I came to a visit in Cincinnati. If you want something free and fun, I'd recommend just taking a hike from bridge to bridge. Great fun, good pics, and there are lots of places to eat and drink on both sides of the river. read more

The Golden Gate Bridge, the Brooklyn Bridge, the Bridges of Madison, all are famous bridges. In Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky, the John A. Robebling Suspension Bridge, that connects the two states, is just as famous. Infact, the John A. Robebling Suspension Bridge is the big (age not size) brother of the Brooklyn Bridge. Both having been designed by John A. Robebling, with his son taking over the Brooklyn Bridge project. The blue color, and embellishments makes the bridge as beautiful as it is functional. The bridge serves as both a pedestrian and drivable bridge. While I don't usually walk over bridges just to walk over bridges, this was an interesting walk. Fantastic views of both the Cincinnati, and Northern Kentucky skyline. People were stopping at various points to take pictures of and with the the skyline. The walk wasn't difficult. If looking for something free to do downtown, the Robebling Suspension Bridge is a good way to kill some time. read more
