This guy sucks. His office staff are difficult. It took months to get in as a new patient, he made me consult with other professionals to get their opinion, and then he just strung me along about fixing my issues for nearly 1 year. It was a waste of time and money. I don't care if I like a doctor, but I felt he was unnecessarily brusque, probably because he overschedules and makes you wait an hour or more before you are even seen. Run Far Away. The previous reviews about terrible experiences including questionable billing & insurance practices ring true. I was very clear about my insurance and yet they said Good news and it was accepted and ONLY had my copay. I didn't think that was the case. I wanted to be compliant in care and followed their direction which included that they were covered. They assured me this and had me return 3x and scheduled an MRI. I wanted to go back to my usual home base and do it, but they said NOooo I needed to do it with them and their local MRI place because they know how to work with them and only have confidence in them. They also stated they already did all this work for pre-authorization. I have never met J. McCaffery. I only met Jamie, (who was nice and i hope she sees the light and finds a better honest practice). There is so much i could say...but look at all the reviews..mostly and consistently terrible. Ironic, they wait til after my MRI and having me come in 3x...before they start billing me (a few months later). Once they heard from my regular ENT (another location in USA), they seemed to know the gig was up. Their website, which is bundled with hearing test group, was so unclear. They are separate but communicate online as if one group. Poor and misleading online presence. I have tried to work with Kathy in their billing office so far without success. Required emergency surgery for my son, we don't live in the area, traveling down the coast. Called and got a same day appointment with the PA Jaime Munroe. She was kind, caring and very professional. She aspirated the peritonsillar abscess, then Dr John McCaffery came and did an incision and drainage. I am very appreciative of their outstanding care for my son. read more

Last fall, I was going to be tested for hearing aids. The person doing the testing said one ear was full of wax. He does not do ear cleaning. I made an appointment with Dr. John McCaffery. I was at his office at the appointed time and was treated with respect. I did not expect anything less. The assistant asked the necessary questions of a new patient. I presented my insurance cards and no questions were asked. My husband, a retired physician, was with me. Also, I am a retired Registered Nurse. Dr. McCaffery was not aware of this until later. He agreed that I had excess wax in one ear and checked both ears. He gently removed the wax, I felt absolutely no discomfort, he checked my nose and throat. My husband and I were very happy with the staff and Dr. McCaffery. He suggested I have my ears checked in a year. I will certainly do that because my fight ear does build up wax. I saw John McCaffrey because I was having pain in my right ear. The entire visit was less than eight minutes. He told me I had hard wax on my eardrum. He dug at it for a few seconds, and then said he couldn't do anything and that I should put baby oil in my ear. That was it. His bill is $735 with my insurance paying $572.75 and a balance to me of $162.25. I'm reporting him to my insurance company and to my insurance broker for insurance fraud. In all my life, I have never experienced such blatant thievery. I called his office and spoke to someone in the billing department, they then gave my case a different code, and billed my insurance company again- twice. Unbelievable. read more

I went in yesterday to see Dr. McCaffery for my first time and it was very apparent that he does not care about his job nor care about his patients. Saw me for maybe 2 minutes MAX, didn't do anything and didn't give me any advice whatsoever (even though I had been in the ER for throat issues a few days prior). He glanced at my lymph nodes for maybe 10 seconds, told me to keep getting good sleep, and That's all. I came to this specialist hoping to get a more thorough understanding of what kind of systemic problem I had going on as it had been in occurrence for quite a while, and I didn't receive anything that I had hoped for. Really should've read the yelp reviews (not the google ones-- they're inaccurate) before coming in. Oh well. Waste of time and money read more

Literally the worst ENT doctor. I had Septoplasty last year. My symptoms didn't not improve at all. My septum is very deviated. I still cannot brethe through my nostrils. This doctor kept saying is allergies...nope. I didn't not feel any better after taking his prescriptions. His front desk staff is extremely unprofessional.. never followed through my request after I asked for a copy of my op report .. what a customer service! I might have to go through another surgery.. thanks to him. Just save your money and do yourself a favor.. there are better ENT doctors out there.. read more

I cannot speak for Dr. McCaffery- because I didn't get that far. I waited weeks for this appointment and walked out the door because of the attitudes from the two women at the counter. Let me remind this establishment that it is completely within the rite of the customer to ask for a price breakdown of a procedure - especially when they are paying out of pocket. This request should not be met with eye rolls and attitude - and if you are going to talk badly about a customer make sure to do it out of earshot where they can't hear you. Horrible customer service. People come here to feel better, not worse. Will take my money and health somewhere else and never recommend setting foot in this place. This office is straight up rude..Does not follow up on referrals and calls to cancel your appt that was made over a momth ago because they failed to do their job when u have only 4 days to come to their office. Office manager Adele was very sarcastic and rude and full of false info on her interactions with on how she handled referrals and past the buck to others. The dr.is also rude in front of people and very short..I would never advise anyone to go here if you want great help seek else where because they play games, VERY UNPROFESSIONAL!!! read more

He examined me and said the didn't see anything wrong. It seemed he was ready to leave after seeing me for 4 minutes. I was the one who had to quiz him about why I had these strange symptoms still with his foot out the door he didn't want to engage in a conversation other than one that would lead to ending it. It would be nice if your doctor actually spend the time to analyze your symptoms more and give possible solutions. I am sure he charged my insurance at least $300 for 5 min. 10 min after I left I saw him in the parking lot getting into his car. He indeed was in hurry to leave the office. read more

I am sorry to report that I had a terrible visit with Dr. McCaffery. I was on time for my appointment and by the time I was brought back to see Dr. McCaffery, five other people were waiting for him. That communicated to me that he was scheduling patients back to back and most likely he would be rushing me. And so he did. No less than 2 times he said out loud "I already told you that." I was shocked. I asked him to please not talk to me that way and he responded "But I've already told you several times". If he has to communicate his message 10 times before the client understands then so be it. He finished by saying "this isn't going to work out" and gave me the deductible I already paid back. Also, he had recent surgery on his eye and at the end of our conversation he was standing about 3 feet away from me and took off his mask entirely to wipe his face. I had a deviated septum. He did the surgery and made it much worse. I don't trust him to be able to fix it. Nice guy, but I should have listened to my gut feeling when it said no to let him do this delicate surgery. I went ahead with the surgery because it is a very standard procedure and I didn't think the chances of it being botched were high. I was wrong. Went here to see McCaffery not his PA. The front desk girls are absolutely terrible and rude. Probably the absolute worst customer service and they seem to be completely inept to answer any question. Extremely unhappy with my treatment- and was literally on the wrong medications. Again, never even got to see the doctor for more than 30 seconds, was solely treated by the PA ????? Who literally laughed at me when I tried to explain my frustration:) There are so many great ENT doctors in santa barbara do not make the same mistake that I did. I noticed that my review is from a few years ago, and wanted to reiterate that I have continued to be very happy with Dr. McCaffery and his staff. Dr. McCaffery continues to be a very competent, empathetic, straight forward and accessible physician. McCaffery is a great doctor, and a very nice guy. That isn't the problem. The problem is that his staff are collectively the most inept employed humans I've come across in my life. You can expect that they will fail to relay information accurately to each other and to Dr. McCaffery. You can also expect that they will be rude, condescending, and apathetic about even the most basic requests. Don't try to confront them about their complete failings at handling basic office tasks that any other doctor's office has to deal with - they will make excuses and pretend it's your fault. I'm sure McCaffery just wants to save a buck or two by hiring the cheapest labor possible, but this will ultimately cost him more in the end. read more

I wish I had read the other Yelp reviews on Dr. McCaffery before making and going to my appointment. What a quack! His office required me to have a comprehensive hearing test and tympanometry because I was a new patient, which tacks on an additional $150 to your visit. Dr. McCaffery had no diagnosis for me and prescribed me an unnecessary and strong steroid and antibiotic just to rule things out. I left the office with zero answers to my ear pain (tinnitus). Weeks later I received a large bill from their office, charging me $557 simply for the office visit!!! Not to mention the additional fees for his required hearing tests, adding up to a nearly $800 office visit with no answers. That is out of control. When I had called to arrange my appointment, I was been told it would be covered by my insurance. My ear condition has not improved and I feel completely taken advantage of by this office and doctor. read more

Love this doctor, have had 4 of my children seen here, 3 of them have had tonsillectomy and ear tubes, have had no complications and no issues, the staff is great, visits are always on time and I can get in and out quick, very professional doctor, he is very considerate in regards to child age and needs, so glad we were referred to his office. read more

Would not recomend this doctor at all. He seemed to busy for his patients, it took me a solid month every time in order to see him. Not to mention i still have severe sinus problems after he prescribed me an extemely strong dose of antibiotics aimlessly while he also told me to take sudafed - at the same time. Ultamately giving me severe anxiety and nightmares. To this day, it has been 3 months. Not to mention i am now petrified of all degongestants because of the anxiety the sudafed and antibiotics gave me. I now can not take any medications to lessen my sinus issues. I choose this doctor because he provides extremely gentle expertise, and I experience no stress beforehand or during the appointments. The new office is super. Dr. McCaffery is the best surgeon/physician I have ever experienced. I was told by numerous surgeons that they couldn't help me and that I should just learn to live with not being able to breathe very well. It can be completely defeating to be told that there is nothing anyone can do. Dr. McCaffery was exactly the opposite. He was extremely kind, compassionate, got to know me as a person, and instantly took on my case. He is the very best at what he does. He also called me a couple of times on my cell phone after the surgery to make sure I was okay and I could call him with any questions I had. Everyone told me it wasn't possible to fix my nose, but he did. I can breathe again after several years and it's better than it ever was before! He went the extra mile to make sure my surgery was a success. I honestly can't rave enough about him. I owe him so much. read more
