This is by far the worst 401K that I've had. 3 big issues: -poor investment options -my company was closing the accounts due to an acquisition. I had to do a rollover and turns out that John Hancock has really shady rules. They basically give you the MINIMUM of current market value when you iniate the transaction, and the value 2 business days later when it gets processed. Absolutely incompetent customer service. Sent over multiple requests for a 401k rollover. The first time they butchered my address (I have the printed record to show it was their fault), so the check was returned. Took weeks before they were willing to reissue the check, which requires a completely different set of forms that needed me to print out, sign, rescan, because apparently we still live in 2003. Then the form apparently doesn't copy correctly when you send it over email, because it has some weird security feature that requires a password that not even the custom rep has. It's 2022. Docu-sign exists. I know for a fact they hire a ton of software engineers. This process is unacceptable. Then eventually when I do get to a rep, their audio equipment is really garbage. Voices sound garbled, and calls get dropped repeatedly. When calls get dropped, they don't always call back. Complain to others on the service line, they apologize, and no follow up after that. Very very difficult to get in contact with with help line, the online process is not efficient. I have all of my info to transfer my 401k to another IRA, and it is impossible to do so. Finally got in touch with a representative, and they were very abrupt, and could not explain, if I was transferring directly into my Fidelity IRA, only able to input my personal info, not the financial institution. The outline states that this is a "simple" process", it is not. I did send my feedback to JH, and the next day received an email, as to how best they could help, and improve my experience. I would give them negative stars if I could. I have been trying to make a hardship withdrawal from them for several weeks now. I sent the paperwork by priority mail so that I knew it got there. They had the paperwork for 10 days and it still hadn't been looked at. It wasn't until I called for the fifth time to find out that they only sent me a check for $23.37 instead of the $640.36. I mean who withdrawals $23.37 from their 401K!!!!! I could have just borrowed that! I am fully vested and this should be a no brainer as long as my paperwork and documentation is in order. As many of the other say, I experienced the same. It is horrible company. the customer service was outsourcing to Philippine ( I asked them where are you located now). Supposedly, it should be the company famous for the great services outsourcing, however, the customer service reps are know nothing, just read scripts with strong accent. I tried 2 Philippine based agents, no difference. I requested transfer to local rep. the lady was driving and calling with echo, then hang up my phone directly. Also, they refused to rollover my 401k directly to my financial institution, insisting mail the check to me directly with $50 deduction fee by the reason of security. Initiated a 401K rollover to my Fidelity rollover IRA over 2 weeks ago. I did this online via Hancock's website providing everything they should need to do this including account # for my fidelity rollover IRA. Two weeks later, no indication anything has happened. Money I moved to money market in preparation for the transfer still sitting there at Hancock. No acknowledgement on the site I had even requested the transfer or that it was in progress. I'm not a million dollar client, nevertheless the sums involved are not inconsequential ($140K or so). Tried contacting them by phone to inquire. After an interminable wait on hold was sent elsewhere. They take no responsibility for a custodian-to-custodian rollover initiated on their own website. This seems like a ham handed way of keeping their grubby mitts on AUM. They are thieves and belong in leg irons. read more

Extremely poor service, different answers each day. Processes that should be able to be completed in 24 hours, (like a simple address change) take weeks. Be prepared to have to call daily to get anything accomplished, but don't trust that it has been taken care of, tomorrow you will find out it was not done correctly. I had a 401K with approximately $11,500 in it from an employer that I left approximately 10 years ago. I tried to withdraw approximately 20% online but was unable to do so. I called and their representative recommended that I transfer the money to one of their IRA accounts and withdraw the money from there. I did so only to have $4,600 in the new account. I called to inquire and they informed me that my previous employer took back $6,000 because it was not fully vested. I would have appreciated any kind of warning from the John Hancock associates that this was a possibility seeing as how I had no intentions of opening an IRA account. Now I have to wait at least 30 days before I am able to access the money and lost more than 50% of it. I expected to pay penalties and have the tax withholding, but I did not expect to lose that amount of money. It is my belief that you should warn customers if there is a possibility of losing substantial amounts of money when you are the one suggesting that they transfer accounts. Looking at reviews on here and the BBB, I would not advise any person or company to do business with this agency. read more

Buyer Beware! I purchased travel insurance through John Hancock. They outsource to a company called Seven Corners to process travel claims. I just noticed my terrible experience is similar to so many other bad reviews Seven Corners has. Travel insurance companies are regulated by your state and I strongly urge you to report this company to your state department of licenses. I can see from all these similar complaints that this company may be a scam. They seem to have a "drip campaign" in which you do not hear from them, only to find they need something else when you contact them. When you call for a status they ask for a piece of information, then "crickets", you hear nothing for weeks/months. The last bit of information they asked me for was my birthdate which I'm sure they have in their records from John Hancock. They seem to be employing some kind of delay tactic, blaming COVID and understaffing, hoping you will just give up. I am so surprised a quality company like John Hancock would outsource their customers to a company with so many complaints just like mine! I submitted my travel claim 7/8/2022. I filed my claim almost 5 months ago! Since then I have spent countless hours with customer service trying to get my claim processed. I even asked to have it expedited for financial reasons. Nothing. For starters, I spent several weeks communicating and sending documentation to wrong companies who had received my claim. It seemed my claim was being sent around to several wrong companies, perhaps a Starr Insurance (?) and then 2 other companies called Squaremouth and Broadspire. I spent hours filling out my claim information on these incorrect online sites, sending followup emails and speaking with their service reps. I was then told by a company, perhaps Starr, to contact Seven Corners, again sending all my documentation to their site. After going back and forth regarding details of my submittal, including the absence of my bank's logo on my online bank statement, which the bank does not provide, I was assured I would get my refund in early October. When I called once again for my time-consuming follow-up calls to obtain a status, I was told I needed to sign a "Disclosure to Release Funds" which I was asked to send as, surprisingly, it hadn't been sent to me. Had I not called, I probably would still be waiting for it! I returned it and heard nothing but "You will receive an email notice when we send your check." Last week I sent another email to check on the status and received an email that "we need the member's date of birth". Surely they have it and if not, John Hancock surely would have it. This seems like a "drip campaign", a series of innocuous requests from Seven Corners, over 5 months, to avoid payment. From my dealings in the business world , my experience here has been absolutely horrendous. I've heard excuses due to "long refund times", using COVID as an excuse, understaffing, etc. You would certainly think a company would have increased their staff due to anticipation of increased claims from COVID. But I believe this is only an excuse to delay payment, hoping customers will just give up in frustration. I have no idea "if" or "when" I will ever receive my refund, but I don't go away. read more

Well john hancock STILL signed me up for the account and removed a total of $85.57 from my paycheck. I've been FIGHTING to get that money returned to me. Today I was informed that only $6.59 is all that's left in my account due to some fees they charged. I won't be receiving ANY of the money they STOLE from me. Do not do business with them at all! Terrible. I had to distribute my funds when I left my first job. However, their process is outdated and ridiculous. Everything is done by physical check mailing, faxing, etc. I was finalizing the process when I saw I had to get my distribution NOTARIZED before I could move it to my new plan, so I gave up and let the account sit for a couple years. After another job change I decided it was time to get it done. I had a couple errors on my end on the forms so I had to redo the entire form and fax it again to get the rollover. At the end of the day, I finally got my funds moved but it was a painstaking process. My other plan through ADP was a simple form that I emailed then it was done. The company I work for has been using them for 10 years. The only reason I have stayed with them is that my company matches a percentage. They have actually charged me more over the last 10 years than they have earned me. My account drops faster than the DOW when the Dow is dropping and rises slower than the DOW when the DOW is rising. I have filled out one of their surveys and also sent them an email with my concerns and never heard back. In both cases I told them that the people they hire to manage funds are either thieves or idiots. I told her this and she had me spend 25 minutes going through steps to do something else. Although I specifically told her exactly what I was calling for at least 3 times, she could not understand that. It took her triple the amount of time to get her sentences out because she kept throwing in extra words and could not remember how to say other words. Finally when she understood what I wanted to do she tran me to yet, another person who could not understand or speak English. Lets just say I will not be trusting my money to them!!! read more

The worst financial services I ever used. It takes six days to generate a 'PERSONALIZED' form for me after I requested an RMD. What is the personalization? My name only. The form does not have a field for me to specify the amount of RMD, or the percentage of tax withholding. So I have to call in to ask. And the wait time is over 1.5 hours, due to the 'unusually high call volume'. I do not recall a single time when I do not wait for over 45 minutes. So the 'unusually high call volume' actually is USUAL. And there is a $10 charge for each RMD. And $50 to close the account. If I could given them MINUS 5 starts, I would. read more

Was helping my uncle who has limited English capability. While I get needing to verify the person, but obviously he was having a hard time understanding my uncle and kept asking him to repeat stuff over and even after my uncle said "yes" to authorizing him to talk to me he wouldn't let me just tell him the contract number. It was so painful listening. Further, I have never dealt with a company that makes it sooooo difficult to withdraw your own retirement funds. They won't allow you to withdraw over phone or online, you have to go to your FORMER Employer's HR. They won't even send you the form you need to fill out. Your former HR has to mail it to you or you have to print it off which you then send back to your employer to sign. HR submits back to Hancock, but to further my dismay, they rejected the document because the HR rep selected terminated and retired when only one box needed to be selected so they kicked it back and it has to be resent. This company makes no sense. If you want a company that makes everything frustrating and is reluctant to make things easy for the consumer, this is your company! read more

They can not seem to correct even the most simple issues. I had a premium increase that was incorrect. They say it was incorrect and happened when they changed over to a new system No one can fix this after 9 months, They sent me a check and 1 word explanation for the check-- cancel. I did not cancel my insurance. I called them and again they say it was an error. Still waiting for someone to correct this. I have spoken to 3 agents already and the issues has been escalated.
