The food was really good. I got a turkey burger combo which came with a drink and fries. The fries were a little too greasy for me but I'd still get them. They were thick cut and cooked. John's restaurant used to be one of my favorite eateries in Palm Desert back in the 90s. I'd stop off for breakfast on my way to work at least once a week. The food was always very good and plentiful. The French toast was my favorite. Couldn't ask for better hours they open At six in the morning and closed around nine at night. I left Palm Springs for Approximately 15 years. Sadly Upon my return in 2020 it wasn't the same. Delicious. I get the pastrami sandwich. It's so simple yet every bite is heaven to me. This is a place where I am so excited about the delicious flavor I am going to encounter that I don't remember to take a picture. I'll try to contain myself long enough to get one next time. I would give 0 stars if I could. Yesterday I went in with my one year-old and five-year-old to get something to eat quickly I ordered a club sandwich with fries and a side salad. It came out to $28. My five year old grabbed about 12 napkins from an empty table and sat our table and started play with them quietly. I saw him do this and I just mentally noted I would just use those napkins as not to waste. This girl who works there runs our food, I proceed to ask her for things, mustard, ranch etc... and she's annoyed the whole time. Then she tells me that she HAS MY SON ON CAMERA taking napkins. WTF? We didn't really understand what she said so we asked and again she said "only burgers and only to go. " I asked why amd she said they were closing soon. John's is a diner style restaurant geared toward locals. I'd put them on par with Denny's. Nothing spectacular, but perfectly fine and inexpensive. I think if you're from out of town you can skip it, unless you want to fill up while saving money. My 89 year old father is a regular. The day I went with him I had an omelette and traditional style hash browns, which were average. My father enjoyed the Greek special, which was a lamb gyro. He added onion rings, which were a little greasy, in my opinion. I was debating between a 2 and 3 star rating, because frankly the food was adequate but forgettable, but what sealed the 3 stars for me was how friendly and attentive the service was. The waitresses were very nice and I suspect long time employees. Older women who call you "hun" in an endearing way. If you're on a budget and want to fill up, John's is a decent option. read more

Good food, convenient, and modestly priced. Basically a diner without a wait staff. You order at the counter, sit, and they bring your food out. This was confusing to us on our first visit and we did miss that diner service vibe, but not enough to complain considering this is one of the few places around that has actual diner prices. Well I first tried giving this place a chance 2 weeks ago when I had my hour lunch break. Walk in and was told that they were unable to make anything because they were cleaning the kitchen... mind you it was 3 o'clock on a Saturday afternoon. I asked how long it would take and the lady that was mopping the main floor during business hours hollered "30 minutes" and continued the mop. I quickly left to waste no more time. My coworker and I gave this a second shot and I left equally unimpressed. We walk in and quickly decided what we wanted to order and patiently waited at the front cash register. I turned around to look for an employee when a lady walked by and said "I'll be right with you, I'm the only one" and I said okay no rush. It was difficult to stand and review the menu board as we were rushed to order by the help behind the counter and by other customers wanting access . My friend ordered poached eggs and toast , I ordered a club sandwich. The restaurant was not busy. Seems to take a long time for the plates to be delivered to our table. The food was average at best . While we waited I took a good look at the interior of the restaurant. It was horrible . Yellowed walls from grease, dust on walls high up, fingerprints everywhere . The last few times I went to John's the Chicken Kabob dinner I received has tasted awful, and tasted like it has been reheated food from the day before. It's been the same cook the last few times it's tasted reheated . The pita bread was bad and the rice tasted like it was from the day before nothing tasted fresh like it has in the past. Decided to try something casual on our way out of the Palm Springs and we saw this place in Palm Desert. To summarize it was not a pleasant experience. Blond lady at the counter was very brusque. My husband ordered a small side of onion rings and she charged us for a large. We got a large order of the worst onion rings; The batter was so bland I can't imagine it being anything other than plain flour and they were very dry and desiccated. My husband and I each had one.
