I've been going here my whole life. There is a review that they used to post outside their establishment which talks about how Johnny's is better than Krispy Kreme. It's all true. I loved donut holes because of this place: it's not too much donut and yet here it's light, it's sugary, and it's unbelievable. The service is also wonderful: the people are incredibly friendly behind the counter! In front, I usually see septuagenarians who have probably been coming here as long as I have...that's the lunchtime crowd for this place. But let me tell you: the maple bars....they are NONPAREIL. They are oozing in maple frosting which melts perfectly in your mouth (unlike M&M's, they'll also melt in your hand too...) and the bread part of the donut is not really like bread. It's more like a puff. A puff of magic. But truly, this place is unbelievable. It's been a fixture in Lafayette for a while. Go there. No regrets. read more

Between a morning hike and a bike ride around Reservoir, I decided my kids deserved a special treat. So, we stopped by this nondescript donut shop around noon and selected an assortment of donuts. Oh my! The customer service was warm & friendly. The person attending to us, added two extra donut holes after my kids thanked her for her assistance. The donuts were airy, soft, not cloying(!), and the apple fritter was crisp & impressive! When I opened the box at the end of our exertions, my foodie friends who joined us couldn't get enough. OK, The donuts here deserve 6 stars. maybe 7. I might even go to 8. yeah, out of 5. But they lose out simply by the fact that if you arrive after 8.00 a.m. on Saturday, you'll have a snowball in hell's chance of getting a donut. Nada, not even a hole. Not one. They will be sold out. Johnny's Donuts is a small donut shop in an old shopping center hidden near CVS and a local grocery store. There's nothing fancy or flashy about the place and their selection is limited, but all of that doesn't matter once you taste their donuts. My personal favorite is the classic glazed. It's soft, fluffy and delicious. Most of all, you can't beat the price. Contrary to some reviews here, I've never had issues getting donuts or coffee on a weekday morning (between 8AM-10AM). Also, the owner and workers are all very polite. The parking lot can get a bit busy, but I've never had an issue quickly finding a spot. Been here twice. Donuts are not the food group I should consume, but once or twice a year seems OK. Fresh and light donuts. Coffee is fine- since very few Lamorindans' serve in the armed forces they, few truly know how delicious instant coffee taste from an MRE tastes after a 24 hour night march. Johnny's coffee is hot and fresh. I like the all cash policy. Simple and easy. Both you and the merchant don't need to pay the bank for the convenience of using your own money. The people are polite and hardworking. Taking Sunday off makes sense. More businesses should do this.good donuts read more

Here's my story: Arrive at Johnny's - 7:15 AM - Saturday - you would figure in plenty of time to get a decent selection. No - the cupboards were basically bare. There were a few holes and 2 plain oldfashioned and a few bars. So I get 2 of each of the maple and chocolate bar. The chick puts them together frosting side facing each other. Totally ruining the whole thing. So, old Johnny comes out, sees this, tells them to get me new ones and the wife tosses them in the trash - he comes along and picks them up and throws them again!!! Hands-down the BEST donuts and WORST coffee in town! Old-fashioned is the way to go. If you prefer jelly or custard filled, they will fill them there and then to order. As a self-proclaimed lover of fried dough, I think these might be the best straight-up doughnuts I've ever had. No frills, just your typical assortment of chocolate, glazed, and maple bars and round doughnuts. The dough reminds me of the women I date: sweet, flaky, tender, and too much of them can lead to a stomach ache. The prices are standard for doughnuts, and it's conveniently located near the freeway so I can swing by here on my way to work in the early morning. Be warned: This place gets ridiculously crowded on Saturday mornings. As in, you're probably not going to get doughnuts if you show up any later than 9:30, and even at that time your options are going to be really limited, judging from my past experiences. They are so warm and oozing with chocolate that I can't touch them for at least 5 minutes while I'm driving. I also got a free-bee for my lil' one. These are a step up from your ordinary, acceptable donut. They are made fresh, and don't seem to hold things over to the next day. The baker has got the frying oil to the perfect temperature because the donuts are not soggy with grease like Krispy Kreme. They are not the tiny little KK donuts either. There are a couple of donut varieties I'm holding the 5th star for. I expected the coffee to taste like ass, but I was shocked. The coffee vendor they're using is kinda crappy, but SOMEHOW, Johnny or Mrs. Johnny are able to make it taste really, really good! They even have half-n-half whereas most places just have that dandruffy looking dry chemical. I'm not a big donut eater, but I do appreciate a good donut once in a blue moon. I read reviews about this place in the paper and on Yelp, so I decided it was worth a try when I craved that donut. So that's what lead us here this past weekend. We arrived a bit late in the morning and there wasn't a huge selection left. They didn't even have regular glazed donuts, which I was really disappointed about. I ended up getting the crumb donut and the bf got a lemon-filled donut. He wasn't too impressed with his donut, but did eat the whole thing. I really enjoyed my donut, although it wasn't great enough to warrant a special trip out to Lafayette. Sometimes a small treat can really make your day. Johnny's is perfect for that. The shop itself hasn't changed since 1970, which is somehow very comforting. As to the doughnuts - just great. Fresh, fluffy, not too sweet. As long as you arrive before 10:30 there are around 15 varieties. After 10:30 the pickings get slim. These doughnuts are very, very good. The few donuts they have are decent but the biggest problem this place has is poor selection and they are often out of donuts at what would still be considered normal donut eating time (i.e. 10am on a weekend?). I did a bad thing. Johnny's has sat innocently a block from my office forever, never tempting me as I would walk to Diablo Foods for a lunch time snack. However, the 4:00 coffee blues and an extra 80 cents lured me in yesterday, and now I can think of nothing else. I had a fresh donut that was the epitome of donut-ness - actually crisp with a nice crust on the outside, and flaky and really flavorful on the inside. Most of the time, donuts just taste like whatever they are frosted with -- Johnny's have a really nice cakey flavor. I have been able to think of little since. They have new competition. Dunkin donuts. But dunkin donuts aren't nearly as good as johnnys. Still the best. I just wish they'd get with the times and start accepting debit cards. read more

What I tried was good. Very fresh and tasty warm. The freshness...amazing. The doughnut holes and just come out of the frier and were so crispy and soft. Very nice texture. The old fashioned glaze I had was very good in flavor and freshness. So why 3 stars. 2 reasons. 1) selection is very very limited. They had almost no selection...Its great if you just want old fashioned or glazed old fashioned or doughnut holes. Maybe the normally have more selection early in the day, I don't know. 2) attitude. The Old lady behind the counter seriously gave me the stink eye when I asked for just a couple of doughnut holes. I had asked if she sold less than 1 dozen, since I didn't need that many, to which she asked "how many do you need?" That let me to think that maybe I can just get them a couple at a time. Instead she should have just told me she only sells by the 1/2 dozen. It would have saved 5 minutes of conversation, and not made me grumpy. :( read more

Best glazed donuts I've ever had! The other donuts including the old fashioned ones and donut holes are delicious as well. They're all made fresh in the morning and melt in your mouth. Ahh yes, donuts, the staple of the American breakfast. Johnny's has been here in Lafayette for as long as I can remember and its a local secret that you won't hear about outside the city. The inside retains that classic American diner feeling and when you walk in, the scent of donuts fills your nostrils. This place is poppin' in the mornings and they make a ton of batches so that you know you're always getting a fresh crisp donut.
