Do not take anything to John's Upholstery. If I could say it any more emphatically I would. The quality and workmanship has fallen so far and fast that what you get back is worth less then what you bring to him. I have been a customer of John's Upholstery for about 7 years and have always brought vehicle seats and headliners. Years ago it was some of the best work I had ever seen on seats. That compared to custom shops I had had work done at when living in Southern California. In total I have had 3 headliners done previously and about a dozen seats. They were really great up until the last year and a half. The last seats I brought him were not nearly the quality as previous, as well as being over $120 more than quoted. I assumed it was just a tough seat. Having had good results in the past I brought him a headliner and seat, cleaned and prepared; I was quoted $290. I was called after 2.5 weeks and was told the bill was $378. I was frustrated by the price jump again, but figured if it was good work so be it. When picking up the seat and headliner I was given a razor blade and glue to "finish". I was shocked but didn't want to have an argument. It took me about a week before I worked on the headliner, as I had to immediately return the seat to have it reworked. The quality of work was substandard at best. The foam was not replaced where agreed, missing pieces of foam, foam bolstering poorly placed so the seat bottom moved when touched. Upon delivery of the seat, I realized I had to go back and have a conversation because the headliner work was so poor that it bordered on fraud. I had entered into a contract for work and which was not delivered, on top of denying and making excuses for poor workmanship. He told me that it being a Volkswagen made it a difficult job. Disregarding the fact that I have had him do 3 VW seats and a headliner before with no issues. I spent 3 hours on the sunroof to get the fabric glued down and trimmed so it would not pull when moved against the sunroof. On the headliner the work is abysmal, glue was not applied well to edges so it would stay attached; after 2 days the fabric/foam detached in places on the headliner. The corners around the sunroof frame and corners have bare frame showing, so that that can seen while installed; one place by the driver's side head that isn't glued down at all. I talked to other upholstery shops. They would have charged me less and said that fixing the work was nearly impossible, without completely redoing it and would have to charge $100 extra to get the new material off. I have little doubt that John's will try and refute the quality of work and say that I was a disillusioned customer, except that I have pictures to validate my claims and expected the work to be done to a basic standard. It seems the owner has checked out and no longer cares what quality of work is, which he also over charges for. I showed my parents who the vehicle is for and they insisted we go back. Upon return he began by denying all knowledge or ownership for the work, conveniently forgetting who had done the work asking "who did this headliner?" quickly followed by the owner yelling at my Mom, saying if we wanted any money back he needed the entire headliner back to keep, which led me to intervene. He was unwilling to admit any wrong then asking, "what vehicle is this going in" as if it was older or not nice it didn't matter. That is not the issue, I paid for a service, does not matter what its for, you did not deliver, you actually did damage to both the headliner backing and the fabric I paid for. He finally asked how much we wanted back, which was the price of the headliner refurbishment, $300. We settled unhappily for $100 as he was not willing to return the money without his "product" back, which had our headliner backing attached to it, a $453 dollar part of the car. In our property we have a large flag pole with a U.S. Flag. With the high winds from time to time, our flag started to tear. I took the flag to John's to see if the flag could be fixed. He asked what I wanted to do to repair the flag. The frayed end of flag was removed (3 inches) and the end was restitched. I got a call with in 24 hours the flag was repaired, the flag looked good The cost saved us money from replacing a new flag .... and it proudly waved again..........This was three years ago. I have each flag repaired once before I contact the Bismarck American Legion to order a new large flag. read more
