When we walked in, we were immediately greeted by a young teen volunteer. She had asked if the children had gotten their free summer book. So they picked out a sticker and a book for their appropriate age. She was a very nice young lady and the kids enjoyed picking out a book. Then we asked the main librarian for the kids section was located. We went to that area and I was a little disappointed that they did not have more activities for children. They had a table with three puzzles. They also had a small wall for toddlers that had some things to do. They had a decent collection of children's books and I picked out some toddler board books to check out. They had some armchairs for parents to read to their children. It's not a particularly large library, but it's good for the area. The front librarian was OK and her attitude, but the children's librarian had an attitude. She had her face covered by a large black mask, and even with that on, you can smile with your eyes. She did not do that and never spoke to any families. Also, she had an activism T-shirt on, and her attitude went with it. I don't know why all of these Johnson County libraries are determined to hire children's librarians that have unwelcoming attitudes. It is a real turn off. I have only one more library left to review and that is in Gardner.

The book selection is not enormous by any means, but of libraries this is a nice one considering the ones I grew up frequenting in my childhood. Like all of them they have great printing services, and what I would say about this one particularly that I love the most is that they have a drive-thru that works flawlessly. You can order your books online and drive right up and be gone within 2 minutes! They also have a field next to the library that's great for soccer or flying kites, a little strange to get in with the way the streets are organized, but the staff is always so helpful here. It's a small local library but, worth it if you need something quick or if they have your book. Ask about the card catalog...

Its not dirty though- in fact it's very clean and well-maintained, it's just old. It has everything you could possibly want in a library. Super nice, helpful staff, easy to navigate, huge children's area, 3 easy self-checkout areas, and 2 return areas. I do wish there was a drive thru return, though, for bad weather days or when the parking lot is at capacity. The parking lot is pretty small. I love using the JoCoLibrary app on my phone and requesting/holding books/audiobooks/DVDs, etc. Most items arrive shockingly quickly, and the app lets you know when they've arrived, how long they'll be held, etc. DVDs, even brand new releases, have at least a week for checkout time- so much nicer than going to Redbox and paying per day, or waiting for stuff to be added to Netflix.

I always have to put a hold on the book which is no problem but, they allow you two weeks to read the book and if some else requests a hold then you can't renew it and have to eat the fees until you finish the book. It's definitely a 3rd world problem that I will continue to deal with but a courtesy for 2-3 renewals should be standard.

JCCC has one of the largest and best-regarded culinary arts programs in the U.S. and the library reflects that. They have quite a large cookbook collection! Not very well-known is that non-college people can check out books at the library, especially if they're Johnson County residents or business owners. (More info on the library's website.) The circulating collection is on the library's second floor, but there is also a large non-circulating culinary arts reference library in OCB 153. Ask at the library for directions and hours the reference collection is available. The online catalog is easy to use -- you'll get great browsing results if you're making a general search by entering the values "(nationality/ethnicity/style)" and "cookery", like French cookery or Brazilian cookery or Jewish cookery. You can also use terms like "desserts" or "baking" or "vegetarian." Of course, you can also search by a book's title or author if you already know them. There are quite good cookbook collections at the Johnson County Library (I know they're pretty extensive at the Central Resource Library and Oak Park branch) but when you can't find the cookbook you're looking for at your local public library, JCCC's Billington Library is where to look next! Especially if it's an older, expensive or out-of-print cookbook! Thumbs up for a great local culinary resource! Professional chefs and curious home cooks will love this library!

Amenities include play toys in the children's area, rooms for group use, and even an enclosed booth for one-on-one private meetings. Materials from other branches can be sent here for pick-up.

We live in Brookside so it's not a far drive for us. Even tho it's small it's quiet and cozy.
