Ample seating (even some hidden away seating in case you are scared of people reading books). Plenty of tables and they have free wi-fi. A library with a…read morefrog Willimantic, Connecticut is known as the thread city because of the high quality textile mills that were present at one time but these days it is more frequently referred to as the frog city. This moniker comes from the iconic bridge with the four large frogs sitting on the corners. The whole city seems to have taken up the froggy theme and you will see pictures and models of frogs all throughout the town. Restaurants, bars and stores have the word frog in their names and the town has an undeniable predilection for these amphibious critters. The public library in Willimantic is no exception. As you walk in the door of this rather small library you will see a large and rather colorful frog. If you look closely you will notice that some of the shelves holding the books are painted in a sort of odd frog green. Definitely something froggy going on here. The library itself is pleasant and efficient enough and has all the usually library items but doesn't have the historic charm that many of the other libraries in the area have. Built to be a functional environment and not an aesthetic one, everyone was friendly and the library does have a exceptional large selection of books in Spanish and a nice bulletin board with local information one it. The Willimantic Public Library is a modern and useful place to find a book, get a movie, does some research or find out what's happening in the community. Or perhaps just to look at a large and very colorful frog.

So this is the second time I've ever been to the Booth & Dimock library, thanks to the Connecticut Authors Trail, and I've got to tell you, it's a hidden gem as far as libraries go. Very clean, well lit, fully stocked, pretty up to date as far as technology goes, I was immediately struck with how this historical little library is everything that a library should be and then some. The staff were incredibly nice and pleasant, very helpful, and the bathrooms were both very clean (go downstairs to the children's restroom, they have a Harry Potter switchplate on the light switch). Very cool little library with a history, if you're in the area you should go. You know, pick up a book and read it instead of being on FaceBook or Instagram. Or instead of just an eBook. Thumb through some actual pages. I've never seen a more interactive and interesting looking children's section in a library.

The parking lot is a good size, and you can access the building on the main floor through the front door, or on the side door and take the stairs or elevator to where you need to go. Great elevator, it barely felt like it was moving and was fast. The librarians were very friendly, even the adult section had some Halloween decor (which is so much fun!) and overall a very friendly vibe.

Books genealogy and…read moreOtis The first Norwich library was built in 1849 with money donated by Deacon (Joseph) Otis; Like most of the libraries back then it was a subscription library and only became a free library in 1891. The old Greek Revival building was pretty cool but it was just to small to accommodate the growing community and so a new, larger but more ordinary building was built in the 1960s. Over the years the new building also proved to be inadequate so the library managed to receive a 4.5 million dollar grant in 2004 for renovations and improvements. This was the largest library grant in state's history and certain turned the library into a wonderful place to research and visit. Unfortunately over the last few years money has been scarce and the library has been losing funding, resulting in loss of hours and programs. Hopefully this will change in the near future. Lot of open space, cool places to sit and a extremely useful local history and genealogy room. A lovely area for kids and even a pleasant little courtyard outside. Not a historical or stunning building like lots of the many of the old libraries in the area but one that has a charming and friendly atmosphere and is a library that is a very pleasant place to work, learn or just look around.

I love this library because they have a lot of books that I like to read as well as cool events…read morelike art exhibits and book sales. The biggest pro is that they have an ongoing bookstore inside the library that the Friends Of The Library own and they're open on Tuesdays and Saturday mornings. There's also a free book section in the lobby as well. There's some cool monthly book displays as well as self-checkout station, scanner, chairs to sit, computers, clipping seed display and many more. There's also a really nice Children's room. The librarians are really nice people and they're helpful. The library services are exceptional.

Honestly the most surprising part was how few people were there!!! But it's about 1:30pm on a Thursday and so maybe that's why? Not sure!! Would absolutely be back when I'm in the area!

A magnificent library…read more The idea fom this stunning building started back in 1891 when Captain Elihu Spicer decided that his home town needed a library. So he donated money and ideas and by 1894 the Mystic and Noank Library was open for business. The good Captain Spicer started out as a cabin boy at an early age and eventually became masters of several ships and acquired quite a fortune. He became a philanthropist in his later years and spread his wealth around generously. The library that was built is absolutely magnificent. Granite was moved by barge from quarries in Ct., sandstone from Ma., marble from as far away as Africa and tile floors from Italy. This is more of a palace than a library and the building is worth seeing even if you have no interest in books. The place is stunning both inside and outside. The building was expanded in 1951 and another 6,000 ft were added in 1992. The architects did a fantastic job and the venerable building retains its stately, archaic and majestic flavor but has all the conveniences and amenities of a modern library. Truly the best of the old and the new. A grand place to savor, enjoy and be amazed at, libraries like this will never be constructed again.
