PLEASE PLEASE do your research completely before attending JIU. JIU's only concern is getting your money! You have no contact with anyone except the so-called support counselors, who are never supporting of the students. They are rude and condescending whenever you try to get their assistance. The only answer they give is there is nothing we can do because it is too late when they were the ones who dropped the ball in doing their jobs correctly. I had a family emergency PLUS the area in which I lived was hit with a freak storm that knocked out power for two weeks (the area was in a state of emergency declared by the President Obama which occurred in June 2012). I contacted my support counselor Lauren to let her know what was happening. I told her I did not currently have access to Internet. I was 7 weeks into my FIRST 8-week course with a 98 average. My professor said I was doing well in the course and that I could finish it when I was able. Her response to me was "I will look into doing an INC for you". I NEVER heard from her again until August 2012 when she tried to sign me up for another course. I told her I was locked out of the original course and said I was not ready to return yet and would in November, but in the interim I wanted to complete my original course. Lauren's constant response was "let me see what I can do". I was expecting to have something done to my satisfaction, so I continued to take courses. A year later and still nothing was done, Lauren was no longer a support counselor, I was never notified of any changes, and I had to start the process all over again. This time it was within a week that the new counselor said that the only thing that could be done was to officially drop the course, pay for it again, and retake! If that is not a scam, I do not know what one is! My professor is no longer with the university, and I cannot get access to the Dean to let him know what is going on in his program. So I let my support counselor know that I would not be taking any more courses until I can talk to the Dean directly. Their response was to drop me from the program completely! read more

Horrible racket. Should have listened to other reviews prior to enrolling that it the graduate school isn't worried about success just getting money. Unethical practices and truly not engaged with individuals, we are just numbers to them. So disappointing. I have withdrawn from the university and its ironic that they have been in contact me so much since the withdrawal process. So many online schools have popped up over the years claiming to be reputable and some of them are but some are not. Word of advice-do very careful research and don't allow the enrollment department of any university make you feel pressured about a decision to enroll. read more

I was recommanded by the edcuation office from my base . It's ironic that the school is closed now due to poor rating from teachers and students. I've taken online classes through the local community college before, but JIU was my first online college. My experience wasn't quite delightful. The major reasons were just like other reviews saying, the school environment, the staff supports. My dad had strokes in Feb 2013, and I stayed with him in ICU for about three weeks. I contacted my professor immediately and let her know that I was dealing with a family hardship that time. I also let her know that I couldn't keep the regular pace with the class because of the mental and physical burden. She sounded understanding at the first but after I was late (still turned them in thou)with 3 weeks of assignments, and I did my best to complete all the assignments, writing and quiz, she said she didn't want to see me in any of her classes in the future. Even today I still think about those words she wrote to me when I was encountering the darkest time in my life. Anyway, not blaming on her, I do feel the school is lack of support for its students. If I could have another choice, I wouldn't choose a full-time online school. The reason I did was because the nearest college in my town is about 45 minutes away from where I live. read more

I earned my BA with JIU. During this time, I constantly had a different admissions counselor to speak with and my financial aid counselor changed several times also. Shows the high rate of turnover, which is frustrating for students. Every time I called with a question I was put on a stupid hold while they figured out which newbie my file had been transferred to. I had to take a private loan through the school for a small amount of my financial aid. Even though they sold my loan, they still will not let me have my diploma until the loan is paid in full with the new company. My loan term was 3 years - so I will have been out of school for 3+ years before I can order my diploma (even though the school has been paid for my loan by the company they sold it to). And then I'll have to pay $100 to order my diploma. They make money any way they can. Can you imagine if all schools refused to hand out diplomas until your student loans were paid in full? Only JIU does this to its students. I am about to take an unpaid maternity leave and called the new loan holder to ask to skip/postpone 1 single payment. I have made my full payment, on time, for the last 2.5 years and never asked for a forbearance, deferment or postponement. Yet I was told this was a private loan and they wouldn't help me. My only option was to make the payment late and incur a late fee. How does adding a late fee to my payment help me during a month when I will have no income? I saw a high rate of turnover, a lot of administrative disorganization and a true nightmare when it came to the student loans. Avoid this school. There are much better online schools to enroll with. Not to mention, I have yet to meet a single person who doesn't look at me puzzled when I tell them where I graduated from because JIU does not have a presence. I'm glad I have my degree but I wish I could say I earned it somewhere else. read more

I wish I would have seen these reviews before I went there. I loved it when I first went My GPA was always around 3.7 and I doubled my classes to get it done as soon as I could . Because I knew I was going to have to get back to work full time soon. In 2013 They let me take one last class until my fields study was going to get done . I hadn't had much luck in finding a mentor to help me through the process. I finally found one then they say I had to do the background check which got lost the first time and took three months the second time . I had to wait there again for them come back they were cleared and I called them. The clearances took till March to come back from FBI . no return calls, I emailed no return emails. then they contact me after I put in a distress call that I don't know why no one has contacted me and if someone does not soon I will be taking my college adventure somewhere else. then they called said they would be closing their doors _WONDER OF ALL WONDERS_ AND WHY ? MMMM CAN'T IMAGINE. They then told me they would contact me with a college that would transfer all my credits in which I did half the program. This college only accepts third party credit no federal financial aid although they are accredited as a teachers college. so I am not in a financial situation to do that so now I have the pleasure of doing what I did 2 and half years ago to find a ma program that would lead to licensure. In the beginning it was great but now I may have to take all those classes over. read more

So I graduated from Jones some years ago with a masters in edu. I had just received my BS in Marketing from a traditional university here in California, was working, developing a small, at home business - but I wanted a Masters in EDU as I loved teaching. About half-way through Jones program I realized this was probably a mistake, but kept going on thinking maybe the coursework was just easy for me, maybe I just had a knack for it. Overall, the coursework was remedial, at best. It is painfully obvious that the idea was to get students in, get money, and keep them happy by graduating them - a high success rate! By halfway, I was literally sleeping through the program. Instructors didn't seem to care, the support didn't seem to care (I had a legitimate complaint and it turned into a joke when it was brought up). The BIGGEST waste of money I have ever spent on the BIGGEST joke of a program. If I were an employer looking at hiring myself, knowing the curriculum at Jones, I would NOT hire myself, if it were simply based on my Jones education. I would not. If there were some way for me to press legal action, even if to get them to be honest about their program, their very-much-for-profit practice, I would. I would not ever recommend Jones. Stick with an actual college or university, a real one, and do their online program instead. read more

I was surprised to hear such negative reviews of JIU. I received a MA in Business and was in the final Doctoral graduating class before the university closed. Throughout both courses, I had qualified, polished, professional professors, who had verifiable experience in the administration of business. The work was tedious and the grading was fair. Most professors had conference call set up to communicate assignments with cohort member and professors. The Doctoral program was difficult, as many are because you are pretty much left to your own devices as you conduct research and write your dissertation. That program takes vigilance. I lost my mother and brother during the process and felt complete support. Although I had a couple of good support reps, the positions did tend to change often. My other negative and saddest thing about JIU was the manner in which it closed. It was a surprise and the timing was awful...just before graduation. Thankfully, the graduation went off without a hitch at Trident University in Long Beach, CA. Sadly, I can't boast about my Alma Mater but I have Doctorate in Business that has taken me many places in my career. read more
