Wow, looking through the photos, the food looked amazing, so I was excited to check it out. I get here and looking over the menu; I was struggling with what to order. Everything sounded so delicious. The waitress came back a second time and panic ordered. And I orderer the meat lover's omelet when I wanted the thanksgiving omelet. There was other stuff as well. But there is always next time. I went to Jonny Cakes Cafe twice over a weekend -- once on Friday to try them out, and a second time on Sunday because I'd left my credit card there and figured I might as well as have breakfast, since I was already there. The first time, I had the chicken cordon bleu omelette. It was absolutely delicious, and a large portion. I opted for pancakes over fruit, and the authentic maple syrup came in a vinegar bottle -- and it was HOT! I took the 2nd pancake and half of the omelette home. The second time, I ordered the Tay skillet. I never would have thought of mixing eggs and corn, but it was really good! That time, I had toast. They called it rye, but it was actually marbled rye. Not as good as pancakes, but fine nonetheless. Jonny Cakes is at the end of a strip mall on Long Lake and John R, and with the construction, it can be a little tricky to find, but it's definitely worth the trip! read more

My boyfriend and I tried to go there for lunch today and were treated so rudely that we ended up leaving without eating there! They were clearly busy, which was fine, so we opted to take seats at the counter. Upon sitting down we were immediately informed by the (incredibly rude) waitress that it was going to be a while before we were served. She offered no water, no menu and no acknowledgment of us for another 15 minutes during which time we sat there just waiting. Another waitress even came by and told us we'd be helped soon but we were not and were just left sitting there while this (rude) waitress purposely ignored us for several more minutes. Everyone was extremely nice and attentive. The food was okay. I tried the chicken Florentine crepe. It was just okay. Just okay. Dime a dozen 2024 version of a diner. Very similar to Jagged Fork. I was there for a 2 hour brunch today with a friend and for 2 hours the same bus boy very loudly cleared tables. It sounded like he just threw the plates in his bucket to the point that I, and several other patrons, jumped and turned around to look multiple times. In the span of 2 hours, I jumped and turned around 3-4 times and it was the same guy. $45 for two so prices are half way decent (for the times). Pretty loud and busy. My week day splurge for a Happy Birthday brunch treat to me was ah-MAZING! Let me warn that's partly biased in the quest of good gluten free breakfast items that are your pancakes, waffles or French toast that can be hard to get a dish better than a dry slice of store bought GF bread toasted and set on your plate. I didn't have a wait but I do also disclaim weekends the waits can be long and about 6 months ago their system for waiting was still weird. Ahhhh Father's Day... a day pushed by the tie and golf industries to celebrate having healthy, strong, and fast swimmers that created a 50% clone of yourself. Personally I think I'm such a great dad I deserve a Porsche, but my 12 year old is terrible at saving his allowance money, but he is hip enough to avoid buying me a tie and taking me to a spectacular breakfast. Quick side story: Long before my palate developed and I understood the difference between edible and delicious there was a... hmmm I guess you would call it a sandwich... called a Monte Cristo at Bennigan's. For those of you who don't know or is too young to remember, this was a chain restaurant á la Applebee's or TGI Friday's except instead of walls covered with Americana it was Gaelicana (if that's even a word). I remember slathering the raspberry jam all over it and biting into the deep fried goodness and being brought to absolute gloriousness. Sure I was sick for three days after but it was worth it. When the restaurants started to close down locally, I would make the 90 minute drive to Ann Arbor once a month. Ah, to be young and stupid. ASIDE OVER: Back to the story at hand. While these French Toasts are not deep fried, I can tell you with no quim, qualms, or quanks that it was excellent. They balance the sweet and savory perfectly and the portion is huge, so very filling. My son ordered the cinnamon bun pancakes and it was basically eating dessert for breakfast. So good. I met a friend here for brunch on Sunday. First of all, I will definitely be back as there are so many choices to pick from. I picked chorizo skillet with over easy eggs and gluten free toast. The gluten free toast option was not mentioned in the menu or at least it is not obvious that its there. To have the option of gluten free toast is just awesome. The skillet was definitely good option when you are not in southern San Francisco bay area and going to Hobees and having DeAnza Browns. The eggs were definitely how I ordered them. The iced tea was good and there were free refills. I'm not sure how long Jonny Cakes has been here but you can tell that people definitely know about it. We ordered the traditional eggs Benedict with hash browns, the Troy skillet (added spinach) with pancakes and a side of sweet potato fries. The food was really good; no complaints and the portions were HUGE. The only thing I would have had differently is the skillet tasted like everything was cooked separately then layered, so it was more like a bowl vs a clump of cheese, meat and veggies on a fork. I heard about this place from so many people and I finally got to try it out. I came on a Friday around 11am so it wasn't too busy. They had a huge selection of breakfast and lunch items. I ordered their homemade corned beef hash which comes with a side of pancakes. You can pay $1-2 to upgrade to their specialty pancakes but I stuck with the regular. The portion on the corned beef hash was huge! The best part was that the corned beef was in huge shredded pieces. Its so disappointing when the corned beef hash is mostly potatoes with little bits of corned beef. The pancakes come with warm syrup which is a bonus. The only downside was that the service was a little slow. Overall, the food and price is definitely a good reason to stop here for some breakfast or lunch. read more

What an awful experience from the moment we walked in. Literally...because the floor was sticky as we sat ourselves and there was salt or sugar poured all over the floor that was never cleaned. The waitress came to greet us, and at first, she was kind, but kind can be shadowed by forgetful. My mom and I had to repeat our order three times, which is fine, but she was writing it down... I first started with a coffee. I added creamer like I normally do, took a sip and have never had such a bad cup of coffee before. I would get it if it was cold but it had a rotten taste to it. I left it alone after a sip and she never followed up, so whatever. My mom finished her water which was also never refilled. I then ordered the Greek omelette and added bacon with a side of white toast and hash browns. I was left unimpressed. The hash browns were minimal and she didn't bring the toast out with it. She said it would be out shortly (which means after she packs a few boxes for someone who ordered carryout). When she brought the toast, the booth across from us could hear the crunch. It was intense and literally burned to a crisp. When it came to the omelette, it desperately needed flavor. I asked for salsa which was pretty good and I drenched the omelette in it. It had that overcooked dry egg taste. No bueno. All in all, I won't be back when visiting family. Maybe it was an off day for service and food but I won't be silly enough to find out. $27 total for two omelettes. Complete ripoff. read more

Well well well, what do we have here. I found this breakfast spot a few weeks ago, and finally stopped in today. I wasn't sure what to expect, but I left pleasantly surprised. Overall, I give this a soft 4, more like a 3 star if it were a chain of some sort. I'm always on the prowl for a good breakfast that isn't chain, doesn't cost an arm and a leg and located halfway across the earth. This qualifies as one of those spots. Walking in, the place is cute. Staff was warm and friendly and I was seated right away. After receiving the menu, I really loved the variety and selection of food they had to offer. They also have breakfast specials here, which I was interested in, but did not get. On a side note, the menu itself, physically, was beat to smithereens. oy. Anyways, I ended up with the Huevos Rancheros. I'm on a kick lately to step outside of my comfort zone when I can, and this is one of those dishes. I normally would get an "Amy Standard" breakfast which is either eggs, hash browns and toast, or an omelette, but I'm trying really hard to get back to experiencing different foods. Now mind you, I went with this dish having really high expectations. I just recently dined at another establishment and had this dish, which was done way better. I'm not saying Johnny Cakes is bad, but it's really not impressive. Did the dish present well? Yes. But, here's where I found problems. First, their hash browns were over cooked and cheap tasting. Like Coney Island type hash browns. Secondly, the tortilla was a bit oily, but quite delicious. Overall, it was good, but not what I would call amazing. Does this mean it was bad, and you should not order it? No, what I'm saying is that it's okay, and probably pretty decent, but if I want an authentic one, I'm going to have to drive a little bit further for it. I will gladly return here in the future, and enjoyed my time here. It's not cheap, but way better then coney island and the like. The food is pretty good and the staff is attentive, but the prices are a little high and the women's room is always dirty. On this visit there was dried urine on the floor that really ruined the entire visit. They had just opened so there was no excuse for it to be like that. Food is okay to decent, not bad and not great. The problem here is a combination of coffee and service. The coffee is usually not hot and seems stale (yesterday's warmed in microwave??). On June 20, 2024, the server first said the coffee machine was broken, then it was working... That cup of coffee was good. But the server never came back for a warm up! Each visit I try a new item the pancakes are my favorite and I love all flavors. The pecan banana was fluffy and full of flavor; the blueberry was amazing and the crepes were delicious. I have put off reviewing this place for so long... This place is so great, and I wish I could keep it a secret for myself. The great food more than makes up for the weird strip-mall location. Be sure to check the hours before going, because they are breakfast/ brunch only! Some days they're insanely busy and you have to wait and other times you can get a seat as soon as you walk in. It's kind of toss up. While they do have one large booth for parties larger than 4, I don't know that I would try to come here with any more people. They don't take reservations, and you'll have to stand around and wait unless you time your visit just perfectly. They don't really have a good waiting area either- just the small space in front of the door. If you sit at the "bar" area, you can watch them make fresh-squeezed orange juice in a pretty cool little machine. The food here is consistently good. Between their breakfast options, and sandwiches, you're bound to find something that you'll like. I'm hooked on the California Club sandwich. The pickle slices are amazing. Service here is consistently friendly. As they get busier, the service does get a little slower, but I think that is to be expected. This is definitely my go-to for weekend brunch. read more

Pros: They have a pretty extensive menu, the servers were kind and prompt and the food was delicious. They have the BEST freshly squeezed orange juice that I have ever tasted! Cons: Was a bit bummed they didn't have mimosas, they probably don't have a liquor license.. but brunch without mimosas is just breakfast in the afternoon ‍. I've been to Jonny Cakes Cafe many times for breakfast whether dining in or takeout. Usually, I get the Chorizo Skillet, which is amazing. Since I'm a spice guy, i like the spicy chorizo. This time, I let my lady get that and I tried something new. I decided on the Banana Nut French Toast. The presentation of their food is always top notch! The French Toast was cooked well and once that syrup hit the french toast and bananas, it was a sight to see. Each bite was great! Mmmmm. I would challenge you to find a bad review of this place. Although I will say that I have only ever had their amazing french toast here. I would totally recommend it. Any and all of it! It's like biting into dessert. I ordered the strawberry banana pancakes, which comes with chocolate drizzled all over. No need for syrup. Oh. And it's a lot of food. I definitely would not be coming here while on a diet. Lol!! Just call it a cheat day and enjoy your 1500 calorie breakfast. So incredible. And there is always plenty to share.
