We have twice stayed at the Lakeland Village in Newby Bridge. The first time was in February last…read moreyear (2007) when we rented a one bedroom cottage that overlooked the River Leven. All of the cottages are nicely decorated and come with a fully equipped kitchen including a cooker, dishwasher and washing machine. Great for self catering if you are on a tight budget and also for cleaning off the mud splattered clothes after a long walk! There is a large tv downstairs with music and DVD player. I missed having a tv upstairs in the bedroom to lounge in front of in the evening when the girls went to bed, but it didn't really matter as we were all tired anyway. We were shown how to use all of the controls in the house, including the heating which was needed at that time of year. Be warned, we weren't aware that you have to pay for the electricity at the end of your stay and it was only when I went to return the key on the last day that I was presented with a bill for the week. Ouch! The upstairs of the one bedroom cottage was very spacious with a lovely view over the river and a huge wardrode. It was just me and two ten year old girls - so I had the huge bed to myself and they decided that they wanted to sleep on duvets in the wardrobe that they made into a den! THEre was a large pullout bed downstairs as the cottage sleeps four, but we didn't use it. The bathroom was large with both bath and shower. A large airing cupboard provided ample space for drying wet clothes and housed a plentiful supply of towels. We used the leisure facilities at the nearby hotel, although the swimming pool is quite small and didn't really excite the girls and there weren't any other activities for children on site other than a small playground with a slide. However, there is so much to do out and about that this didn't really matter. Although the cottages are part of a timeshare resort, there is no hard sell. You are casually invited to a meeting in the Coach House, but I wasn't hassled by constant phone messages or newsletter to attend - unlike the approach we have had when visiting some of the other Interval International properties. You are pretty much left alone to enjoy the peace and quiet of the Lakes without interference. I enjoyed the week so much that we went back again this summer. The prices for a week in August are still very reasonable even for the larger two bedroom cottages that sleep 6 and we had a dog with us as well (£50 extra). I suspect that this is somewhere that we will go back to again and again. Not only is the accomodation really nice but the Village is a great base from which it is easy to visit so many other places, and a welcoming home from home when you are fit to drop from all the walking and sight seeing!

The cottages are part of the timeshare program and are well-taken care of. We were met at the cottage by the timeshare associate, Rachel, who explained how the devices work at the activities going on through out the week. When you stay at the cottages, you also get access to the hotel and the spa/fitness club. The hotel has a restaurant and pub, but both have different opening & closing times so be conscious about that. Also, the restaurant is a bit pricey. The spa is wonderful and has many services available (massages, facials, waxing, etc) and the prices are reasonable for a private resort. So, when you stay at the cottages, you get complimentary access to the pool, which includes the hot tub, sauna and steam room as well. The cottages are all situated on the river, which is so picturesque. The flowing water is lovely to listen to, while sitting on your porch, watching people feed the swans. The cottages are all well-equipped and stocked with all the cooking, bathing and cleaning supplies one may need. They have washer/dryer unit, full kitchens, linens, iron/ironing board and all the cooking tools that come in handy. For anyone staying here, purchase groceries before arriving to the cottages -- the nearest grocery store is about 10 miles away (a bit expensive and they close early). There aren't many businesses or things to do around the area so be prepared to travel for the sight-seeing adventures & tours. Also, for the fellow American travelers, bring a conversion adapter plug for all your American appliances (hair dryers, curling irons, shavers). The cottage grounds are maintained beautifully and the surrounding landscape is breathtaking. The staff at the hotel & spa are all very friendly and helpful. I would definitely return to for some R&R. Wonderful experience!!

We don't like the vibe of the outdoor activity centre quite as much as in the other parks, which marks it down a little. Overall, though, we had a great weekend at a decent driving distance from Scotland.

Center Parcs brought what was Oasis several years ago and since then there has been lots of changes, some for the better and some for the worst. The most noticable being the price! It can be ridiculously expensive - especially during school holiday where you can spend over £1000 for 5 days in a standard lodge. The good thing about this Parc is the accomodation. No matter which level you go for (range between comfort and exclusive), you won't be disappointed. They are all wooden cladded lodges set within the forest and all a nice walk to either the Country Club or the village centre. We usually stay in an executive lodge which have a sauna. Not a necessity and we don't really use it too often but for 1st time visitors it is a nice extra. You also get a daily maid service in the executive which is very nice! The pool area is great fun for all the family. We like to sit at the top level where if you are lucky you will be able to get a sun lounger and chill out with a good book while the kids go off and play on the flumes and slides. The outdoor pool is small but great. We have never been in the summer so we don't know how overcrowded it gets but be prepared for a sprint to the outside pool in your 'cossie' as it is rather chilly! We have used most of the restaraunts either for take away or sit in meals and have enjoyed most of them. The on site pub - Tom Cobleighs has a small play area so is worth a visit if you have smaller children. As with most holiday parcs, the food can be expensive so we try and eat in as much as we can and then go out a couple of times. It is worth taking food into the pool area too as the drinks and snacks are pricey here. They have a well stocked supermarket on site too which again is a little more expensive than normal but you will find most things you need here. There is a cash point, creche, small cinema, and a doctors which we have needed to take our child to in the past and the doctor here was fantastic! Some activities are again pricey. The kids have enjoyed roller skating, badminton and football but we don't feel we need to spend our holiday doing lots of different activities. Just walking through the lovely forest from the lodge to the sports plaza to grab a latte and watch the kids playing pool is enough for us. We love it here and can't wait to go back!

There are two bathrooms, one of them has bath/shower. Which should be ok, unless you have some inconsiderate guests who treat it as their own bathroom and sit there for ages. It's not bnb's fault, but something to be aware of! Cooked breakfast has a few items including porridge and fry-up options.

Located just a few minutes walk from tranquil Derwent Water and the bustling Main Street, this B & B was a perfect getaway in the heart of the Lake District. New owners Ged and Carol have done updating to the premises, including a gorgeous new bath in largest suite, Cat Bells. The hosts were lovely and hospitable folks who were knowledgeable about the local terrain and very fun to trade stories of their various adventures around the world. Carol's breakfasts were also top notch, and I looked forward to our delicious treats every morning. Great value and location, immaculate rooms, delicious food, and wonderful hosts. Chequers is a small hotel/restaurant situated on the road just leading out of Barrow. It has a…read morelovely traditional bar/lounge downstairs with a proper roaring fire where you can enjoy a drink, and a full modern restaurant upstairs. It also has function rooms for weddings, funerals etc. The food can't be faulted, and is also fairly good value. However if you are going there be warned there is no disabled/wheelchair access to the upstairs restaurant. I booked a family meal for 10 of us for a birthday last year, but when we got there our table was upstairs and there was no lift - meaning my elderly grandmother could not come upstairs and join us. I asked if we could all sit downstairs in the lounge instead, but was told there was no room. In the end two of us had to sit downstairs with my grandmother while the rest of the party ate upstairs; it was a real shame, and put a dampener on the mood. So be warned if you are booking a meal there! Apart from that though, they do a very good job and Chequers caters for large parties very well.

She recommended a really good restaurant for dinner our first night there. The breakfast that was included in the price was tasty too. Overall we liked staying in Keswick to tour the Lake District. It had a lovely coal effect gas fire and very comfortable sofas. The kitchen had all utensils you could wish for a lovely view of the rear garden which is attracts all kinds of birds. You can just watch them for hours. The bedrooms and bathroom were just perfect. The views from the cottage were second to none, as it's on a hill (with Old Man behind it) you get a view of Coniston lake and village and to the left the Langdale pikes. The cottage is just minutes away from the town and local pubs. I can't recommend this cottage enough and can't wait to go back again.
