I don't typically give restaurants five stars, but our experience at Joon exceeded expectations! SERVICE: 5/5 To begin with, the waitstaff were kind, attentive, and efficient! They made our experience even more delicious! AMBIANCE: 3/5 The ambiance, too, was nice - modern, elegant, and sleek. My only qualm about this was the harsh lighting: I believe it just so happened that where we were sitting, there was a harsh overhead light, but I noticed the entire restaurant is not this way. FOOD: 5/5 Our meal was fantastic. We came hungry, and it looked like we barely made a dent in the kebab after we ordered by the end of the night! To start with, we were given a complementary spread of lavash, fresh olive paste, a grassy and bright tarragon and herbs spread, and cheese with olive oil. The bread and spreads were fresh, handmade, and delicious! FATTOUSH SALAD: 4/5 The fattoush salad we ordered as an appetizer was quite large and was seasoned very well! SHENGOOL: 2/5 We were opted to try the signature cocktail, Shengool, which was unlike any drink I'd ever had. It wasn't really my cup of tea, but if you like light, fruity, and fizzy, it's your drink! KEBAB PLATTER: 5/5 For the main course, we ordered the kebab platter, which says that it serves 2-3 people, but I would argue much more! The saffron rice was moist, crispy on top, and flavorful; the vegetables, perfectly grilled; and the meat, absolutely succulent! The filet mignon, beef, and chicken were each seasoned and cooked perfectly (and differently). The chicken might have been my favorite, which is saying something, considering that when paired with anything red meat, tends to not be as flavorful. PERSIAN LOVE CAKE: 5/5 I'm still thinking about this dessert, which is fluffy cake sandwiching a pistachio cream filling and apricot jam, all topped with a magical rose glaze. The $45 unlimited brunch deal is a steal and a great way to introduce people to Persian and Middle Eastern food - everyone in our group left full, happy, and having tried a couple of new dishes. The kabobs, french toast, and mast o musir were our favorites. Decor is beautiful, they have really done a good job making it feel welcoming and upscale. I came here for dinner and had a great meal. First off the vibe is great. Seeing the artistry and hearing the music playing you get the feel you are in a middle eastern restaurant. They have a bar area and different seating styles including chairs and booths. The servers were very helpful and checked in to provide recommendations and see if we needed anything during the meal. For dinner I had the Persian cucumber salad and the duck fesenjoon. Both were delicious. For desert I had the roulette, which has pumpkin and glazed apples and has a unique sweetness to it. I recently tried Joon's unlimited brunch and everything was amazing! Upon arrival, Joon struck me as an elegant representation of Middle Eastern culture. The interior of the restaurant is so beautiful, with comfortable lounge areas, and intimate dining spaces surrounding a large bar. They offer complimentary valet service for parking, but you can also park in the lot for the surrounding retail center. The service was great. We chose to try the unlimited small plate brunch for $45 each, and our server offered some recommendations to start off with. Every single thing we tried was so delicious! And the food comes out pretty quickly. My favorites were the baba ganoush, the toshka - an Armenian "quesadilla", the magyu-e sokhari - fried shrimp and vegetables in a tomato sauce, and the Persian cheese omelette. I also really liked how detailed each menu item was. Both alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks are available, but they are not included in the unlimited brunch price. However, I didn't mind, because I felt like Joon really exemplified each dish on the menu and the price is fair for unlimited small plates of such quality food. everything about this experience was amazing!!! i came in by myself on a sunday night after seeing a movie. it's a bit hard to find walking from the metro, but a helpful passerby directed me to the restaurant. they seated me immediately in a cozy little corner, and all the servers were incredibly nice. sometimes dining alone means the servers think you're sad and lonely, or that they treat you rudely, but these servers were super kind. all the food was incredible. the eggplant and split pea stew was warm and the herbs they gave me with the stew added an amazing lightness. the espresso martini had cardamom syrup in it, which gave such a subtle sweetness to it that i enjoyed immensely. overall i really enjoyed the experience and cannot wait to return!! read more

Having patronized some of the ghost kitchen businesses affiliated with Joon, such as Franki's Cookies (3.85 to 4.15/5), Pizza Serata (3.25/5), and Yasmine (3.75/5), I had high hopes for the marquee experience: an upscale contemporary Persian sit-down venue. Unfortunately, expectations were, instead of merely not being met, rebuked. Allegedly there are several publications which have cited this restaurant as being within a portfolio of current top 50 nationwide restaurants, and top 10 in the Virginia/DMV area. I have to offer my most sincere and heartiest of scoffs at any diner, paid or otherwise, pedigreed, affiliated, hired or otherwise, who would be included in such baseless sycophancy. Nothing about Joon supports either laurel. I dined here for brunch on a warm Saturday afternoon. Per my reservation, I was seated and tended to nigh immediately despite the abundance of customers. Good. The server greeted us and answered questions directly while offering recommendations. Service is to be commended. Likewise, the ambiance, decor, and tables are of an upscale quality; perfect for any occasion or mood you may seek to invoke. However, quality of ingredients is not up to par, as some items tasted stale. Execution, perhaps the most grievous offender here, was exhibited in a seemingly willful and intentional attempt to insult the customer; an homage to complete lack of regard or even an attempt, let alone the attention to detail one would presume from an upscale establishment. My two kebab dishes are overcooked and poorly seasoned; the rice is overcooked, overly abundant relative the rest of the respective dish, dry, and lacking any flavor; the tomatoes taste overly boiled and slightly past; the appetizer bread is plain to the point I wouldn't be surprised if it were pre-made and store-bought; the salmon omlette is a mishmash of unprepared cuts of smoked salmon from a grocery refrigerator with hard, crumbly egg yolk loosely encasing it, absent any flavor, softness, creaminess, cohesion, or pizzazz; and the serving sizes, relatively and absolutely, are befuddling. Price-point aside, I would not willingly and knowingly pay for any of these dishes. That they are the prices they are (approx. 156$ for the items pictured below) only compounds the reckless, self-involved, out-of-touch narcissism of critics who would trumpet such a venue. The food is not edible. My fiance and I both agreed, even if removing the factor of price, Wendy's and Taco Bell would have been far more enjoyable. Honesty, criticality, and an obligation to the every man (relatively) is the way in which an establishment must be judged. Within those confines, it is close to impossible to attempt to offer this business a rating greater than 1/5. I find more reason for disfavor in that, my friend who joined my fiance and I for lunch was talked down to when he inquired about something he wasn't familiar with. While seeking clarification on what exactly constitutes Persian cheese, as he is not familiar with such, the server acted as if his query was ridiculous and not readily understood; matter-of-factly regurgitating that it is, simply, Persian cheese. It was not until I explained the nature of my friend's query that said conversation advanced. For note, my friend arrived late to our meeting; and my prior note on service solely applies to myself and my fiance. The best items are the desserts and tea. I am biased in favor of tea, as trying each culture's teas--namely those that put a high emphasis on such--is important to me. I derive a high level of enjoyment from such unless it is beyond disastrous (so the bar is low and the grade inflating is high). Desserts, on the other hand, suffer from a high bar and low inflation, in that, enjoying sugary sweets is easy; therefore, judgment is critical and unforgiving, as it doesn't take much to make something sweet, delicious. The desserts here are nothing exceptional; but still enjoyable, relative to the food, merely on account of being desserts. Would I rather patronize Lady M or Teas'n'You nearby for such, however? Unequivocally. I cannot tender a recommendation in favor of even one visit, even if to satisfy curiosity and novelty. Hopefully things improve. As it stands, I double down in my convictions that many cited critics should be stripped of their weight; on the merits of this example; let alone another restaurant in close proximity which is also, in my eyes, unjustly and intentionally dishonestly elevated. read more

If it was just food & ambiance Joon would have scored a 4.5 from me but they are getting a rating of 3 due multiple issues with service . 1/The bottle of still water had a kind of gross residue floating at the bottom. When we brought it to their attention they said may be it did not get cleaned properly in the dish washer and just apologized. 2/ The 'For the table' appetizer plates were just being shoved in between 2 people without making proper space at one end of the table which was making it hard for people on the other side to reach the plate. 3/We ordered the Soltani with chicken but were served with a mix of chicken and beef. It not only met but exceeded them. Mast-o Musir, yogurt dish with Persian dried shallot and rose petal, was exceptional-- more elevated and nuanced than any we've had. The mushroom Khoresht stew with white truffle was another highlight, offering perfectly balanced flavors something hard to do with white truffles and a satisfying richness, complemented by the perfectly crunchy Tahdig, iconic golden rice crust. The braised lamb shoulder which Yacine suggested was the undeniable highlight of the meal I which each dish was excellent. Tender and flavorful, it was paired beautifully with texture. It's a signature dish that rivals the best we've ever had, bringing to mind the legendary Bo Ssam pork shoulder from David Chang's Momofuku-- bold, unforgettable, and expertly prepared. The Gormeh Sabzi, short rib stew with its delicious sour depth, was excellent but couldn't quite match the lamb's showstopping brilliance. Two very minor points. While the food and service are exceptional, the main dining room lighting would benefit from dimming. A water filtration water system could make a big difference as well. JOON has firmly secured its place as a must-visit dining destination for us. We can't wait to return and explore more of the menu. read more

Parking is definitely a little difficult for this place. They have so retail parking in the front or you can park where Patsy's is. This is located near Tiffany's where Chef Geoff's used to be. Our server was great and attentive, super nice. She did have to ask us to move toward the bar area toward the end of the night as they were closing. We ordered the scallops, chicken, cucumber, and meatballs. I wish the scallops were more pan seared, they tasted a bit raw and didn't have much flavor. We did enjoy the potatoes it came with. The chicken was large and great to share. The rice has crispy parts to it which was delicious. The meatballs were a bit dry for my liking but the sauce they came with was excellent for dipping. We also got one of the dips as an app but I cannot remember exactly which one it was. We also ordered 3 different desserts. The baklava was not my favorite, maybe because it just wasn't what I am used to. I did enjoy the log roll cake! The ice cream was just okay. They allow refills on their bread so get ready to eat a ton of carbs. I do think this place is a bit pricey for what you get plus the parking is a bit of a hassle. When we ordered the whole rotisserie chicken, our waiter came back out 10 minutes later and said it was sold out (since the chicken didn't come with rice we had ordered an extra rice dish to come with it but turns out that was unnecessary since we didn't even get the chicken). Horrible: The manager of the restaurant came out and started clearing our table up while we were still talking and he was extremely rude without giving us a chance to try and enjoy our time there and we got our cue to leave the table. I reside in Massachusetts, and whenever I find myself in Washington, DC, I make it a point to dine at Joon. Since its opening, I've had the pleasure of visiting Joon four times, and each visit brings delightful surprises with new additions to the menu. The quality and flavor of the dishes have truly elevated; what was once very good is now unbelievably delicious and unique. During fourth of July weekend, I was in DC, a group of four of us went out for dinner at Joon. We ordered a couple of appetizers: the Lamb & Pistachio Meatballs and the Cucumber Borani which was accompanied with fresh hot Persian bread. Both were amazing, but the meatballs blew me away, so flavorful and tender. For my main dish, I ordered the barg kabab, which reminded me of my time in Tehran with its rich flavor and perfectly grilled tenderness. Everyone else loved their dishes too, and we all agreed how tasty the food is. I should also mention the great service we got. Our waiter, a friendly young Iranian guy, was very knowledgable about each of the menu items and provided us a great service during our visit, making the experience even better. The restaurant had also such a welcoming vibe that really made our dining experience special. I'm already excited for my next trip to Joon when I'm back in Washington, DC. This review is slightly delayed in its appearance on the scene but nearly a month later and I am still dreaming of the fried sardines! First things first, we were very late for our reservation but they were very understanding and gave us a spot at the hightop bar. Grant was on service for us and quite informative for the entirety of the night. I was afraid that because we weren't set at a table we would be unable to sample their complimentary bread service but was delighted when I found out it was included. My friend and I decided on two appetizers, the fried sardines and the mirza ghasemi. Those sardines, as someone not as fish forward as I am meat...this is a dish I would/will repeat anytime in returning trips. The acidity and sort of mulled sweetness of both the fresh slice and the dried flakes tempered the chili and the punchy crunch of the pomegranate seeds mixed with the brightness of the mint..just made the whole dish sing. It was devoured, bones and all with relish. And if ever the burn of the chili began to seep deeper than desired, the rich eggplant of the other dish and its creamy egg yolk was there to soothe it away for the next serving. For our main we split the Shishlik lamb rib chops and supplemented the regular rice with the sour cherry instead. Honestly the pairing was everything. The meat was savory and tangy and when in the same spoonful as the cherry rice - it was just comfort eating cradled in a touch of cunning. Over a bottle of wine my friend and I discussed this shared meal compared with one we had had a day prior - which in itself was nothing to sneer at - but missed a vital element that JOON didn't. Each bite, kept surprising our taste buds. At no point did anything we ate become staple or muted on our tongues. Each and every single one only reiterated how good the dish was - from start to finish. The only thing that was a bit of a sideline was the dessert. We went for the ice cream cookie. For something that seemed to be so rose water imbued I could not taste a hint of it when I tried. To me it was reminiscent of a little debbies oatmeal crème pie - which thankfully my friend was a fan of. Next time I will absolutely go for the Persian love cake! But truly, the entire dinner was amazing and for those who read the menus before and budget out - it was an extremely well balanced price for the amount of food and drink we enjoyed. Let me start by saying Joon is one of my favorite restaurants. I love the decor, service and food. Eleven of us celebrated my 90th birthday at Joon on 5/17/25 with the all you can eat menu. A special accommodation was made to include their wonderful Pistachio soup ( do not miss this). Our wonderful server Nadine B managed to bring out the small plates on the menu at a timely pace while keeping up with requested drinks. The three vegetarians in our group had lots of choices and were well sated. It's really hard to pick out a favorite among the dishes since they were all so good. This is my second time going to Joon for a restaurant week lunch. I'll start off by saying the food is so so good and the portions were large for the $35 price which was great. The restaurant is beautiful in the inside and though parking can be tricky, they do have a free valet service in front of the restaurant if you are dining there which was great. The negative however is that this is the second time I've gone and the service was so slow both times. I went for lunch with people from work and it took 2 hours to get our food and get out of the restaurant, not only that but the waiter was one short on the entrees as well. At multiple points we tried to get the waiters attention simple to ask to get the bill with our last course because of how long it was taking and he was blatantly ignoring us. So much so that he'd go to tables nearby with his back fully to us and we'd have to speak out to get him to turn to our table. I completely understand when staff is overloaded and trying to help everyone but the room was mostly empty and all we wanted was our bill so we could pay and leave. While the food was incredible, this was the second time going where the service staff just left a bad impression. read more

I'm a fan of the cookbook author, Najmieh Batmanglij, have several of her books, was excited to try this out after also seeing the Washington Post food review around their opening. Excellent restaurant that lives up to the hype! Service was great, helpful in explaining the appetizer and various menu items. We were comfortable and it was an upscale ambiance, could easily take a date or business meeting there, or also go just for the food and enjoy your time and food. We parked at the garage around the corner, there is a short cut from second level to walk thru the building, or you can use the valet parking. We had the pistachio meatballs with pomegranate sauce and a white fish dish with a mild cream sauce. I got the sour cherry rice and mom got the regular rice with tahdig, both good but I think I would get regular next time as the food was already very flavorful. The table appetizer was bread with goat cheese, sabzi butter, and a fig sauce, all good. You could also order more appetizers but we didn't get any additional on this trip. Worth a trip out to the Tyson's area to have dinner here! You may want to make reservations. We went on a rainy weekday before the peak dinner hour and got seated okay, but the tables are spaced out, and lots of open area, limited number of large tables. Came for kind of a dinner on a weekend evening with a group of 4 relatively soon after the opened. They restaurant was pretty packed but we were able to find a seat at the bar that accommodates us. While the server was pretty attentive the food came out a bit slower than we would've like. I wonder if they were still shaking off some rust and figuring things out given they just opened. That being said the food was fine. We got a mix of things to share amongst use starting off with the bread and dips. The weirdest part of the whole meal was how slow the bread came out. I'm not sure if that was on purpose so they could give other people who were asking for bread too but felt like something could've came out faster. The dips were all pleasant though and flavorful. The lamb and pistachio meatballs were pretty good despite the small portion size. The Kubideh plate was good. Wish there was a bit more for the price but the crispy rice was a nice surprise and the skewers were cooked to perfection. The best dish of the night by far was the dip, the mast-o-musir. It was tart and creamy and left us wanting more. The Persian love cake for dessert was ... fine? I'm not a dessert person so not a good judge but the people i were with enjoyed it so there's that. Phenomenal. Delicious food and excellent service. Warm, relaxing, but elegant (in a comfortable, not stuffy way) atmosphere. Easily the best Middle Eastern food in the DMV. We started with the Persian Cumber Salad (one of the best things I've ever tasted in my life) and the Mast-o-Musir followed with the Lamb & Pistachio Meatballs and the Kubideh Kabob, with the Sour Cherry Rice with Tahdig. All well-seasoned, well apportioned and tasty. Courses were well paced. Staff were attentive but not overbearing. Stay for the tea service! I'm not without my criticisms: after being seated we waited a little too long before the server first arrived (but she was extremely apologetic and absolutely aces for the rest of the service), the parking is not close, and the Lamb & Pistachio (though well cooked) was just barely warm when it arrived to the table (I suspect it had been plated, but not carried out in time). That said, these criticisms are not enough to keep me from giving Joon 4.5/5 Stars. My wife and her co-workers are regulars for lunch, and I can't wait to get back. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. read more

We had a wonderful experience at Joon. Food was absolutely delicious and our server Yaseen was attentive and amazing!

I went to Joon for my husband's birthday. We got the falafels, duck and the lamp kabobs and everything was excellent! The ambiance was nice and our server could not have been nicer. The reason I am not giving 5 starts is that, unfortunately, service was slow - it took a long time to order and even ask for more water - and the menu had very limited options for my husband who is allergic to gluten and dairy. The menu was clearly labeled for allergies and modifications but our server pointed out some discrepancies which limited our options further. We'd love to go back but, Joon, please make a rice without butter! read more

After reading the very mixed reviews, we were a little nervous about our dinner at Joon.  What we found was a mixed experience.  The food we ordered was very tasty and well prepared.  The atmosphere was comfortable, relaxed and colorful in its surroundings full of plush, soft furniture and bright tiled surfaces.  The service was very friendly and helpful but, as many others mentioned, they seemed super busy and getting their attention was not easy.  Because of this, waits for water, bread, the check, etc. took a lot longer than expected.  We were seated right away in a very well-lit dining room and presented with a varied menu.  Our server was great about answering questions and offering suggestions.  As others have also mentioned, the table was immediately graced with a trio of really delicious dips and nice warm bread.  My only disappointment was that there were only two pieces of bread (though they were large) for four diners.  This can make things a little awkward.  I really wish that, especially when a restaurant does not have an issue with providing more bread, the number of pieces of bread would match the number of diners.  Four people - four pieces of bread.  Joon was very happy to provide additional bread but the wait in between was long as the servers were really busy.  As we were only four and not six diners, we opted for more appetizers than big platters.  This worked out really well. The apps we shared were the lamp and pistachio meatballs which were super good (more bread to dip please - the sauce was super!) and the mast-o khiar. We did opt for the sour cherry rice which was also great.  Several people have mentioned that they thought the rice was hard and crispy.  This treatment is supposed to have that delicious layer of crispy rice and it is really tasty.  Another smaller dish was the duck fesenjoon.  This gave us a chance to taste the duck without ordering such a large platter.  Everyone enjoyed it and had enough to taste.  The one platter we did order was the whole roasted branzino.  This was also very good.  My only suggestion would be to offer to fillet the fish once it is presented to the table.  Trying to get to all the fish among all the bones is messy business.  One more issue with how the dishes were served was the lack of serving utensils.  This seems to often be the case.  Many of these dishes were meant to be shared and we had clearly stated that we were going to share them all.  It would have been much easier to have the large spoons, forks, etc. when the dishes were served rather than waiting to be able to get the server's attention and then waiting for him to have the time to get them.  Again, our server was great but obviously pulled in many different directions.  It was nice to have the complimentary valet especially since it was raining the night we dined and the garage is kind of away a bit around the back.  If you don't opt for all the large platters, once can have a super good dinner at Joon and not break the bank.  But, you do need a lot of patience and time to get what you need during your meal. read more

I was disappointed to be disappointed by the rave reviews. Came here for happy hour, which has a nice selection of appetizers/dips and drinks. The reason why I didn't love Joon? The rice was undercooked, dry, hard, and chewy. I took leftovers home and added some water and finished cooking it the next day, so that the rice was fluffy, and then re-crisped it. The salad has too much parsley stems and some strong herbal note to it that I didn't like. I usually have no issue with parsley but couldn't eat the salad and couldn't put my finger on it. Biggest offender is that chicken was slightly underdone. Not raw, but still slightly pink, which was off putting. Things that I liked? All the dips dips were excellent - the eggplant and spinach bolani especially! Service during happy hour at the bar was mixed. One bartender was lovely (Grant), the other spent most of his time flirting with a group of girls. read more
