Jake billed me more than $107,000 before I finally changed attorneys, and the results and level of representation I received did not come close to justifying half of those fees. Despite the stakes of my divorce and SAPCR proceedings, my deposition preparation consisted of a Zoom call lasting less than 40 minutes. I was not adequately prepared for significant areas of questioning that arose during the deposition. Jake also failed to adequately communicate how rapidly my legal fees were escalating. On May 8, 2026, I was informed for the first time that the firm claimed I owed an additional $48,177.34, after I had already paid $59,432.65. The lack of results was equally frustrating. Over approximately four months, Jake was not even able to successfully resolve the return of my personal possessions from my former spouse. I was paying an extraordinary amount of money while watching basic issues remain unresolved. Most concerning, I did not receive the strategic guidance, preparation, communication, and advocacy I expected from an attorney charging these rates. I hired Jake expecting an experienced family-law attorney who would protect my interests and provide clear direction during one of the most consequential legal matters of my life. That was not my experience. I eventually changed attorneys, but by then I had been billed more than $107,000 thousand dollars and was left not even making it to first base in the process. She gave mu wife and I excuse after excuse for months. She filed and extension and then did nothing for months. She even suggested I was a liar when I told her how long she had my documents. I have all communications documented. This morning I blew up her phone demanding my documents be returned. I told her I would get my story out about her online so she sent the Hays County Sheriff to my house. Stay clear of this person is my advice. The police officer and I had a good laugh. He couldn't believe she'd had my documents for four months either. She is now threatening me here on yelp and telling lies because I posted a yelp review. I didn't know it was illegal to post reviews about businesses that are terrible. Everybody here should read the story about her company on KXAN. I've never threatened this lady. She is a liar. The only thing I told her is that I would share my story on Facebook, which I've done. I will also be filing a complaint with the Texas bar association.

In 2019 I needed a small change to my own will (the name of a beneficiary, altered from a relative's family trust to the relative's full name). I approached the Osborne Hellman etc. firm about the matter, since they had written my will many years ago and had the original copy in their lock-box. In reply I received a letter from Mark Osborne, apparently the son of the senior partner Duncan Osborne, signed and dated June 18, 2019, informing me that the Associate who had worked on my wife's estate, Joshua P. Rogers, had left the firm, and that the firm did not have another attorney to assign to my need. This I felt was shabby business practice. I cannot recommend the Osborne firm to anyone. I found another Austin attorney and transferred all my legal business to him.

I have an active case with the State Bar Of Texas to investigate this issue and he is also ignoring all communication attempts from the State Bar. Prior to this I had opened a case with the Client Attorney Assistance Program and he ignored them, too. He owes me several thousand dollars and is in breach of contract for failure to return an unearned retainer. Not only is failure to return an unearned retainer unethical, but given the amount of time that has passed this has potential criminal and civil consequences for Mr. Coonley. Although he is (technically) a lawyer it's not clear he understands that failure to reply to a grievance issued by the Chief Disciplinary Council of the State Bar Of Texas has the potential to get him disbarred at worst and at best produces a public reprimand which will be on his record forever. I would never recommend anyone work with this attorney. I paid a $5,000 retainer in good faith and was left with a stalled case, procedural failures, and no resolution after more than three years. I am now in the process of filing formal complaints with both the State Bar of Texas and the Better Business Bureau. 1. Repeated Failure to Serve Opposing Counsel. Despite multiple assurances that key motions had been filed -- including one to dismiss the case and another to recover my $6,200 bond -- they were never served on the opposing party, rendering them procedurally useless. "Our firm was not served with the motion to request the return of cash deposit nor with appellant's motion to withdraw appeal... The motions were not 'unopposed' but were simply unreceived by us." -- Opposing counsel, April 2025 This wasn't an isolated mistake. I have similar evidence from 2022 confirming the same issue. This shows a pattern of negligence, not just a one-time oversight. 2. Contradictory Claims About Firm Identity and Evasion of Responsibility. In 2025, Mr. Thomas attempted to distance himself from responsibility by claiming that a "previous firm" had represented me -- despite the fact that the firm still operates under his name, from the same location, using the same phone number and email address that have been active since 2021. He wrote: "As you both should know, my previous firm represented you in the subject-titled cause. I was listed as an attorney on the case, though I should not have been. I did provide minimal advice to your lead attorney on a certain question, and I was the managing attorney of that firm at the time. Since then, our new firm wanted to help finalize the case, however, and though I would like to help y'all, I must withdraw due to a conflict of interest." -- Griffith "Hunter" Thomas II, 2025 No formal substitution of counsel or withdrawal was ever filed. The attempt to rebrand or relabel the same legal entity appears to be a blatant misrepresentation, designed to sidestep professional responsibility without changing any actual operations. 3. $5,000 Retainer Depleted Without Results. Despite repeated commitments to advance the case, no hearing was set and no motion was ever ruled on. Instead, my entire retainer was depleted -- not on progress, but on: * Internal file reviews by junior attorneys * Repeated responses to my update requests * Reworking tasks that should've been completed long ago At no point did my case move meaningfully forward. Their inaction left me right where I started -- only with thousands of dollars gone. 4. Poor Supervision of Inexperienced Staff. My case was eventually handed off to a first-year associate who had recently joined the firm. He appeared at a key hearing (a Temporary Restraining Order) and said nothing. He was left to manage filings and deadlines with little to no oversight -- resulting in additional errors and delays that undermined my position. I was ultimately forced to represent myself. After years of missed deadlines, broken promises, and misleading communication, I was told I would need to pay even more to continue -- despite the fact that my original $5,000 retainer should have been more than sufficient for this matter. At that point, I had no choice but to represent myself. Mr. Thomas's actions violated my trust and appear to violate multiple provisions of the Texas Rules of Professional Conduct. Avoid this attorney. Don't be fooled by polished branding, vague excuses, or shifting stories. What I experienced was negligence, misrepresentation, and costly deflection -- while my case stalled and my retainer disappeared.
