I've thought about writing a review for a long time, but haven't since I didn't feel I had much to add to the prior reviews. After reading the review from 6/4/2019 I've changed my mind. First, Dr. Ng has been in the field for a long, long time and has helped a lot of people. I would like to think his success speaks for itself and he's thought highly of within the Chinese medicine community. No one doctor is right for everyone and Dr. Ng certainly didn't seem like a right fit for this person. However, I do question this person's agenda ("tell me what was wrong with me" - I can't tell if the person had a chief complaint or just expected Dr. Ng to tell him what his chief complaint was) based on the tone of the review. First he quotes Rick Sanches? I think that's some animation character?People comment on how nice Dr. Ng is because he's genuine and cares about his patients. It's not an attribute shared by all doctors, but most of his patients feel its authenticity with Dr. Ng and comment on it. As far as competence, his body of work speaks for itself. This patient mentions a few times that he's studied TCM. I know TCM as well and have always entered the treatment room with an empty cup. I'm primarily there to receive a treatment and absorb what I can as a learner on the path. I don't ask the name of a point that was used because I know what it is based on where the needle is inserted. I only consider why it was used. I can only assume that this patient wanted the name to be pointed out because he was testing Dr. Ng. So again I'm wondering why this person was there in the first place. And to actually question whether Dr. Ng knew the name himself questions Dr. Ng's integrity. Yes, Dr. Ng uses 1 or 2 needles often. This is his style. He uses multiple modalities to treat a patient. Would I like a few more? Sure. But the more important question is if the total treatment worked or not. And yes, his diagnostic techniques are primarily based on tongue and pulse, which are objective approaches. My experience is that high level practitioners have very refined skills which allow them to acquire quite a bit of information with tongue, pulse, palpation, and observation. The reviewer mentions prescription at the end and I can only assume he's talking about herbs. You leave the treatment with an herbal tea (which rocks by the way) and the same herbs in a bag to decoct your own tea. The choice of herbs is based on the diagnosis and you can see the raw herbs in the bag. Since the reviewer sounds like a TCM expert I'm sure he could determine the prescription by looking at the herbs in the bag. I really don't understand anything about secrets. Yes, the office uses high quality herbs. Also, a different practitioner may have a different diagnosis and hence use different herbs. Treatment from week to week would most likely involve different herbs since of course people change over time. But hey this reviewer knows it all. So I've received treatments from Dr. Ng for 1 year. I consider him a very high level practitioner with a great deal of authenticity (I will leave out the word nice). Yes, I do find his treatments effective. He may not be for everyone, but he would be at the top of the list of people I would recommend to others. Peace read more

As a result, most of the practitioners of what we call Chinese Medicine here in the west have a difficult time establishing and maintaining successful clinical treatments with their patients. You may call Dr. Ng a traditional Chinese medical practitioner because he is using Chinese derived methods of treatment in conjunction with the traditional definition of a human-being, but his medical knowledge and skill reaches beyond the limitations of these terms. Z.X, instead of going in for treatment, it sounds like you went to visit Dr. Joseph with the intention to find faults, mistakes and to challenge his knowledge in order to fulfill your own curiosity. Why are you wasting Dr. Ng's time, and after just 1 visit you go online to criticize him the way that he doesn't deserve? It's not his job to teach you what he knows, and unfortunately, you didn't earn his respect to teach you his wisdom. You may have studied TCM and acupuncture, yet how can you compare yourself and your knowledge with someone, who truly has real live experience, who has practiced for over 40 years and who has a proven track history of helping patients with medical conditions that even some practitioners have given up on? I was confused about my first acupuncture experience. Not really sure what to expect, but I visited to see if Dr. Ng could help with my neck and shoulder pain. He put in one needle and did some cupping on my upper back. I am not sure if it helped though. It felt relaxing during the treatment, but I didn't really feel much better after the appointment. Maybe I need a few treatments, but it's hard to say. The appointment is $95 for the first time and $85 for subsequent visits. Herbal teas are also part of the treatment (and additional mandatory charge). Perhaps I didn't give it enough of a go, but I was a bit skeptical about the whole experience. I'm not sure if I'll be back. Other: Dr. Ng is patient and calm. He's one of the longest practicing acupuncturists in SF. Parking is a bit tough in the area. You have to park in a paid garage. read more

The reality is that acupuncture is actually more of an art than a science, and Dr. Ng is a true master of the art of healing. (My rule of thumb is "the worse the English, the better the acupuncture"... although his English isn't that bad.) I generally go to see him when I'm feeling under the weather, and his treatments usually knock out the cold, cough or flu in a day or so. I've referred dozens of friends, usually with more serious ailments than mine, and it's always followed by a "thank you and why didn't you tell me about Dr. Ng sooner!" It's a pleasure to be treated by such a knowledgeable Chinese Doctor. I first came to Doctor Ng after 3 weeks in bed with severe sciatica. That same evening of my first visit I was finally able to sit through dinner without pain, which was wonderful as it was New Year's Eve with my family. Even though I don't "understand" what happens when I go to his office, I know my health is supported for the better and my pain has not returned. Dr. Ng is one of the earliest certified acupuncturist in San Francisco. He is extremely well respected by his peers and his patients. He takes great care and in most sessions really take his time. He has a strong following of patients of all background and races. He also have will prepare the medicine on-site while you wait, so you walk away with a hot coffee cup full of herbal tea.
