I was raised in a Pentecostal Church and he was raised Roman Catholic. We each stopped going to church because we felt a lack of acceptance in the churches of our upbringings. After an extensive online search for "gay friendly" congregations we ended up attending the Palm Sunday service at COS (which is what the congregation calls itself). What we found was a community that accepted us without needing to label us as "the gay couple." This is what we were looking for in a church. They are a vibrant group with a tremendous amount of community involvement including: Food for Friends (a group which provides meals to Chicago's Homeless residents on Saturday and Monday), multiple AA meetings, children's ministries, youth missions, a Monthly foot clinic for the homeless, a great choir, and much more. This church encourages active participation without pressure which I love. Are there negatives? Of course, as long as us humans are involved there will always be issues but the pros far outweigh the cons. PS - The parking lot is difficult to get too but there is a great video on the church's website that helps navigate this problem.

Now, they have two contemporary services at 9 and 11:15 a.m. I was initially attracted by their three stated goals: following Jesus, empowering 20 & 30-somethings, and changing lives. This church actually practices what they preach! This is a diverse congregation in every sense of the word and that diversity is welcomed and embraced. The sincerity with which Redeemer does most everything is endearing and inspiring. This is a place to grow spiritually, emotionally and socially with others who are interesting and interested in knowing you.

But lately, the messages have been focusing more on political and social issues than the gospel. So much so that I started to leave angry and full of guilt every week. Sound like that bad relationship yet? If I wanted politics, I would watch CNN. If I wanted to feel guilty, I would go back to the Catholic church. No thanks to either of these. Nearly three years ago, I was searching for a liberal, liturgically-oriented Protestant church in the Edgewater/Andersonville area. I was given the names of three churches, and chose to attend services at Ebenezer first since it was the closest. I never checked out the other two. The phrase "spiritual home" is over-used and trite, but that is the best phrase to express my experience at Ebenezer. I am there every Sunday; my week is not complete unless I am. What's so compelling about Ebenezer? --The worship service is steeped in Lutheran tradition; yet it is far from "fusty" and "irrelevant." Starting from the basic premise that we are "justified by faith through grace," communal worship becomes the springboard to expressing our faith in the world. At the same time, we are individually nourished and strengthened: "bread for the journey." --The preaching is solid and intelligent; no dumbing-down. The music is sublime and varied; including jazz, motets, and traditional hymns. The Word and Holy Eucharist remain the center of worship. --The congregation is full of the most interesting people imaginable. All are dedicated to living out their faith. But we have fun, too! CONFERENCE - The 2025 Vineyard Women's conference was amazing. It was 3 days and 2 nights. The conference was broke down into morning, afternoon, and evening sessions. The conference was filled with fellowship (praise and worship), learning God's word through hearing speakers in large and small group settings, connecting with other women, small group discussions, and prayer time. During the conference, there were breaks scheduled through the day for lunch, snacks, and dinner. CHURCH -- The church itself is fairly big inside with plenty of parking outside on a parking lot. As I walked in each day of the MORE conference, I was greeted by either church staff or the National Vineyard Women's committee staff. The church has lots of ministries for members to get actively involved with, such as Bible studies and volunteer opportunities. The leadership appear to be trying hard to increase the frequency and intentionality of the communication as well as community engagement and opportunities for others to get involved. I have observed a youthfulness in the congregation and although a transient group (related to university and college attendees), there is also a contributing membership made up of young professionals and seasoned city dwellers. Handicapped will struggle to get up the stairs to the main worship area as there is not an elevator or lift. There are often people who can assist. They are welcoming to all. We found this church within walking distance of our apartment soon after moving downtown. It is fundamentally solid with contemporary praise and worship.
