My son went in with pretty much zero musical knowledge, could barely keep a beat and never had attempted to read a note or even really play any instrument. Hes progressed to a level where I know in a few months more time he should be able to sight read music easily. The lessons are filled with the level of instruction needed and no minutes are wasted. Be sure to leave time everyday to practice at home, because the more you can progress yourself, the more Mr Burd will be able to teach you, I wish my son could give more time to practice, but even at his level of less than an hour per day, you will see improvement over time. One of the best parts about using Mr Burd as an initial piano instructor is his absolute focus on proper technique and hammering in the importance time after time, some young minds need to be told a few times, and he really makes sure you are 100% competent before moving on to the next important thing. So happy we found a local piano teacher with patience and knowledge!

When we started, she was a gifted "play by ear" student, but he has taught her to read music and to understand theory, which is really helping her advance. Paul has deftly balanced patience with encouragement - challenging her grow, but taking the time to acknowledge frustrations. She loves him! And as a working mom of 3 elementary-aged kids, I have really appreciated his willingness to be flexible with our schedule.

To whom it may concern regarding Tracy Lovley…read more Tracy Lovley is an accomplished musician and piano player. She has a talent for teaching her many students from children to adults, even those of advanced age how to play piano. What Tracy brings to the lessons that she teaches throughout each day - even on weekends - is her skill at the keyboard, her talent for teaching, and her deep knowledge of music. In addition, she brings something more that I refer to as "Magic". After a lesson with Tracy, her students feel a compulsion to continue the experience and to want to play better. In short, Tracy inspires her students to want to become better musicians. Young piano players are better musicians and better people for having studied under Tracy's watchful eyes. I highly recommend Tracy Lovley as a teacher and a musician in her own right. Written this day October 5, 2025. By James Collora

Tracy's vast understanding of the historical context of the composers helps me understand the goal for my playing. Tracy is warm and inviting. Despite my nervousness at times, she is reassuring. The occasions I have had the pleasure of hearing her play are sheer heaven. I appreciate that she is a lifelong student and has not forgotten how challenging it can be at times. Tracy's home is in a lovely neighborhood which makes me feel safe. Tracy's family is gracious and welcoming as well and welcomes me as a part of the piano student family. I highly recommend Tracy Lovley and am thankful for the stupendous piano journey we have been on together. Eileen Bottenberg

Very positive, welcoming, and full of energy. Watching the kids learn music and explore different instruments is honestly inspiring, and what stands out most is how excited everyone is just to walk through the doors. You can tell they love what they do, and it shows in every lesson.I highly recommend Santee Music Academy to any family looking to introduce their child to music or take their skills to the next level. My 6yo son loved his lessons with Joey and I highly recommend him for drums (I'm sure he's excellent at guitar also). He learned a ton in a short amount of time and Joey even played the guitar while my son drummed live at his first recital. Joey was very passionate about teaching and was always excited when my son finally nailed a section of song he had been working on. Santee music academy has great teachers. The only reason we stopped going is because sports with three kids resulted in too many conflicts and our goal was to expose them to music at a young age and then see if they want to come back to it in the future under their own desire.

He was going to go to San Diego High, but it felt big and impersonal. My son is smart and i felt like he was going to just cruise by without any challenge or any accolades. We toured SET and my son was so excited. I love that each class is small. I love McCurdy, Ms Heath and all the other teachers. Ms. Geis is such a rad human! My Daughter is the opposite of my son.... She is into dance and theatre, but after seeing how awesome SET was, we enrolled my daughter too. Love the school and staff dearly!

If so, I highly suggest you check out SET High (formerly Coleman Tech Charter School). Our son graduated from SET High last year and now our daughter is attending and we couldn't be happier. She is only in 9th grade and already taking on leadership roles. The teachers exceed my expectations. They know each student by name, have great relationships with them. My son's former teachers are always happy to see him when he goes to visit, which is often. He even gave graduation presents TO some of his teachers before he left. The students are geeky, wacky, nerdy, different, intelligent, unique, confident, and wonderful! My daughter said that she didn't want to go to any other school because she is with "her people" and she is right. Dr. McCurdy said in last year's commencement speech, "If you aren't failing, you aren't learning." What a great place to make mistakes, learn from them, and make improvements. I'm so excited for the students attending SET High because they are learning real-world skills at such an early age in a supportive, caring, and fun environment. You won't find a better school for your student!
