Came here with a couple of friends to celebrate one of their birthdays and he decided on this place. The interior decor was really nice and cozy. Read that their fish and chips were to on point so I decided to get it and boy were people right. The breading on the fish was nice and light so that it wasn't overly oily compared to others I have tried. The coleslaw was also amazing and light on the mayonnaise which is what I look for when I eat coleslaw. Big fan of the fish and chips, definitely something you would want to try from here. Also got a few sushi rolls which were decently priced. Got the dragon, spicy tuna, spicy yellowtail, spicy salmon, sunshine and shrimp tempora. All were great, I liked the sunshine roll because it had a nice circus flavor from the lemon they used which I loved. Friend got a bibimbap which looked amazing as well. Overall great food, service, decor inside and outside. Would highly recommend to try this place out if your ever in the area or want to swing by Jamacian Plains! read more

Came here for dinner on a Friday night - it gets packed really early! Cozy spot in JP. The atmosphere is lively, casual. There's also some limited outdoor seating. Food: the dumpling soup was really clean and refreshing. The broth was a clear broth with some scallions and japchae noodles, with a hint of pepper. The dumplings were the clear star - very well seasoned and good texture, probably the best dish of the night. The sushi was okay - fish was relatively fresh, but the rice was hard, either undercooked or left out for too long. The service was strange. The hostess was a little confused in the beginning but we got seated in okay time still. We were seated outside and the waitresses kept opening the door and bumping into our table, almost knocking over our drinks and soups multiple times! Overall, nice little place in JP. Nothing really special, but a nice regular sushi and food place. If you come here, definitely try the dumpling soup! read more

Decent but perfect spot for that moment when you crave Japanese food ....or maybe you were craving Korean food. Anyway, you couldn't decide so you said to yourself "if only there was a place to satiate this ambiguous craving" then BOOM-- here we are at JP Seafood Cafe. First time I came was in the winter. I wanted something of the soupy nature so I went with..... Mando Kuk ~ their soup dish with dumplings and beef and veggies. Clear broth, light on the salt. Perfect amount of yum. The second time I was here though I ordered Pad Thai which was a little bit of a Sad Thai for me (huehuehue) because it lacked the traditional pad Thai flavor that we all know and love! It tasted more like stir-fried rice noodles in a gravy. But also, when did Thai food make its way into the menu? Being both a Korean and Japanese restaurant, as you can imagine, prices are a little on the higher end. So, this, combined with the decent food, makes this spot an "occasional visit" for me! read more

My family and I came here for Sunday lunch recently. We were seated right away without a reservation. Ambiance was casual but fairly loud (most of the patrons were families with young children). I did appreciate all the live tropical fish aquariums throughout the restaurant. The menu primarily focused on Japanese/Korean food and... classic New England fried seafood - weird mix but I'm not complaining. The food quality was hit or miss though. The seafood scallion pancake was more soggy than crispy. The shrimp tempura in the crazy maki was cold and limp. The hot stone bibimbap was actually pretty good, but stingy with the meat portion. Fave items were the fried calamari and the fried seafood platter. This is a solid back-up spot if the better restaurants are fully booked or have a long wait. read more

Their lunch bento box is a great deal- for $11, I got a miso soup, green salad with carrot/ginger dressing (with plenty of carrot strips), a large fillet of salmon topped with a tasty teriyaki sauce, a good-sized scoop of white rice, 4 avo-cuke rolls, a medium-sized piece of fried white fish drizzled, and a large fried potato patty (the last 2 drizzled with some kind of sweet sauce). Each item was well-executed and flavorful, and I left very satisfied. The yaki udon was good as well, and came out on a sizzling platter which was cool (which, on the plus side, kept things hot throughout the meal, but just beware that the noodles on the bottom might burn your tongue if you're not careful). Only downside is that service was on the slow side- but we had asked to sit on the patio, so that might have contributed to it (we were the only ones there). I'm already a frequent guest at their other spot Evergreen, and am happy to include this spot on my go-to list too- can't wait to try their other sushi. read more

I've been to JP Seafood over 10 times in the past two years, especially lately, as I've decided its one of my favorite restaurants in the area. The food is fresh and good quality, prices are reasonable, and there is always a table available. I have two gripes which are more to do with my preference: 1. Their "special roll" section is lacking. *Many* of the rolls have more American ingredients, such as cream cheese, which is not my preference. As a result, I tend to stick to the more simple maki and nigiri offerings. I would love to see more classic special maki rolls like the ones available at similar Japanese restaurants. I also love their agedashi tofu--the coating is very crispy and manages to adhere to the tofu. 2. They don't deliver, and don't appear to be associated with any food delivery companies. I really like this place, especially for a healthy weekend brunch. read more

Bulgoki- Can't go wrong with their great ole marinated grilled beef with white rice and steamed vegi. It comes with miso soup. Godzilla Maki- Shrimp, avocado, spicy mayo and scallion. Reasonably priced and surprisingly filling. Iron Chef's Crazy Maki- Anything with shrimp tempura is a safe choice and it also has spicy salmon and tempura flakes. Win-win. Overall Service: Ordering on the phone is seamless and delivery is consistent. Usually we get the food within 30-45mins during their bustling dinner time. Thumbs up. read more

Seafood platter came with fries, which were quite good. The fried fish was fairly good and portions were generous. Soup was a bit sweet but good portion size. I've lived in Jamaica Plain for my entire life and passed by JP Seafood Café on several occasions. Today, on a Friday around noon, I finally took the plunge and went on in to try them out for lunch. We found parking easily in the lot behind the restaurant - I confirmed with one of the waitresses before being seated and she said that we won't be towed and that parking there is just fine. Otherwise, 2 hour parking is available on the street as well as in a lot behind Blanchards Liquor Store. There were already a good number of people occupying the restaurant. Most of the items on their menu are of Japanese nature with a bit of Korean flare thrown in. Everything on the lunch menu in particular comes with miso soup and the Bento boxes includes not only the soup, but also salad, your choice of brown or white rice, 3 Pieces of Avo-Kyu Maki, Vegetable Koroke, and Fried White Fish. Everything is also either $10.95 or less, which is pretty reasonable. We ended up ordering the Bulgolgi (Korean marinated beef) Bento Box ($8.95) as well as a Spicy Seafood Yaki Udon ($10.95). Within the short amount of time that we waited to receive our food, JP Seafood had a full house; not a single table or chair was left unoccupied. Impressive! The food too, was good. The boyfriend and I always count the number of shrimp we get whenever we order a seafood dish. We were impressed by finding 4 good sized, well cooked shrimp in the Seafood Yaki Udon! I was also anticipating the dish to be drier, but rather it came pretty saucy, which allowed the flavor to permeate through every bite. The bulgolgi also tasted good. I was more impressed by the fried white fish in a tempura like batter. Light and tasty. Overall, the quality of the food was impressive. Everything tasted good and the service was just fine. My only complaint, and the reason why I'm deducting a Yelp star, is because I wish the portions were bigger! Other than that, go here around lunch time to get a tastey, decent priced meal! read more

I heard jamaica plain was hip and cool, but I didn't believe it until experiencing JP Seafood Cafe! The outside looks unimpressive, especially with the outdated sign, but once you go inside, it morphs into a chic clean and stylish. We were seated right away on a busy Friday late night, and service was quick, efficient, and attentive. My fiancee oft' calls me a sushi snob, and was surprised when I had nothing to say after ordering and consuming my thoughtfully crafted dish. I order the Chirashi, as I usually do at Sushi restaurants. I judge fairly on the freshness of the fish. I am a simple man to please, as long as you offer fresh well prepared fish. We also ordered a roll, which had cucumber on the outside...it was less memorable. I would say easily forgettable, but I won't forget the overly crunchy and tough taste of the cucumber which overpowered the rest of the roll. But overall, not bad for a place that is tucked in out of the way of any major body of water. I had heard great things about JP Seafood Cafe but ultimately felt is was simply a good, not great place from my first experience. The Good: Appetizers were very quick to come out and quite yummy. The vegetable gyoza steamed was surprisingly filling and savory. The sushi was very good -- we got a smoked bluefish summer special which was delicious. Not too fishy or smokey but noticeable flavors that weren't overpowered by the perfect amount of cream cheese, onion, and cucumber. At $7 it was also nicely priced. The Fair: My +1 and I shared the tofu pad thai and Spicy Seafood Udon. The Tofu pad thai was pretty bland, most of the noodles stuck together in clumps, and just was underwhelming. The Udon was more dissapointing as the other reviews highlight it's fans including friends word of mouth. I found the udon noodles to be way overcooked and lacking bite, there was a fair to good amount of seafood variety and quantity which was nice, but the broth was lacking flavor other than moderate spiciness. Lastly, the service was fair at best, too. We waited up to 20 minutes for our check to be taken and then run during a weekday where the place was only half-full. Bottom line: I'm mindful of how much I've said "fair" during this review. I think that sums it up. I will return here and try it again to order more of the sushi. My advice on this visit is to stay away from non-sushi entrees and stick to the appetizers, maki, and nigiri. read more

It was six pieces of sashimi -- two kinds of tuna and salmon -- all tasty. My companion got chicken teriyaki, which looked good. The boxes include salad, potato cakes, fried fish of the day, white rice, and a 3 piece veggie roll. All boxes also begin with miso soup. Nothing was bad but nothing was extraordinary. It was all serviceable if somewhat generic. To drink, I ordered Diet Coke. They brought a warm can to the table with a glass half full of ice. Because we were eating at a wrought iron table in their outside patio area -- essentially the JP sidewalk on Centre Street -- it felt rustic and makeshift. There's no way to set anything on the table without feeling like it's going to drop through. Service was cheerful but slow even though the place wasn't very busy. After the boxes were deposited, we noticed we were short on wasabi. It took forever to get a server and then even longer than forever to get more wasabi. The wasabi arrived when we were almost finished eating. But it didn't matter. It looked like it had been scraped from the edges of the tub, all crusty and unappealing. I'd go back. Maybe sit inside? We ordered the following rolls: Spicy tuna, Spicy salmon, Eel cucumber and avocado and sashimi. The rolls were about what you would find at a local grocery store. I was not impressed and it was very pricey for the quality. The sashimi was better than their sushi, but still not top of the line. I was a bit disappointed. Their non-sushi, non-sashimi items that my family ordered looked much much better. If you happen to come here, I would recommend ordering other items from their menu. Their bibimbop looked really good, but I didn't get to try it. All in all, I'd give it another shot but I didn't have a good experience with their sushi/sashimi. read more

Charming spot in JP Center with reliably tasty food and decent service. They know us and our son's allergy list and we know we can order a ton of items here without incurring a great deal of allergen risk. Calamari is great, love the sashimi and the edamame is also crisp and delish - never mushy! It is fun to run into friends and the place is really family friendly in spite of no kid menu or kid's activities. The fish tanks are plenty entertaining, plus the food comes out really fast. So does the check. So you can be in and out before anyone gets too restless. Bathrooms are always clean. I like a spot you can come to anytime, lunch or dinner, and be assured you'll get the tasty food and good service you expect. read more

Surprised to see that they offer brunch menu items (omelettes, pancakes, bento boxes, ect) in addition to their dinner menu items (mainly japanese driven with some korean options). The place was busy not swamped so we were able to get a table right away. The waitress was super friendly and patient as we navigate through their extensive menu options. We ordered: Vegetable croquettes - not exactly how I'd pictured it. I was envisioning lil round balls filled with veggies. It was 2 round patties cut in half filled with I think potato and a few peas. It was a nice start to our meal. Seaweed salad - decent Spicy seafood udon noodle soup - wished it was more spicy (but I guess it needed to tailored down to accomodate most palettes). Generous amount and assortment of seafood/noodles. I could barely finish it (rarely happens). Zen omelette combo (broccoli, mushrooms, tomato and spinach) served with hash browns, toast and a fruit cup. My mom ordered it because of the picture (she rarely orders traditional americanbreaksfast items). Amazingly the plate came out looking like the picture. Mom super pleased with the quality and taste. Come here all the time. Food good , prices decent. They violate law by refusing service to people with service dogs. They need to train their hostesses better before their ill trained hostess denied entrance. Hostess on 10/12 denied entry before even seeing my dog was a service dog. Too stupid to bother looking or asking. Maybe she wasn't too stupid, but she clearly wasn't observant or present, so maybe she was too busy on her iPhone to be service oriented to even look at the people who walk in the door. Brought my business and my friends' business elsewhere. Their loss and a real disappointment. So spreading the word don't support places ignorant of the law and can't bother training their hostess. read more

My mother and I started off with the Vegetable Koroke and Scallion Pancakes. Both were delicious, I personally would have preferred my scallion pancakes to be a bit crispier but it was still worth it. We ordered the Spider Maki, no complaints from my mother, and the Shrimp and Chicken Spicy Basil Pad Thai. This was by far the best pad Thai I've ever had! So good it drove me to leave a Yelp review!! Plenty of chicken and shrimp, and plump juicy shrimp at that. Flavors were on point! My mother tried it and couldn't stop eating from my plate. After waiting for literally an hour, with the waiter constantly saying "your sushi will be right out" and seeing everyone around us getting their food before us, we got our sushi at around 9.10pm (an hour later). The rice was still hot and fell apart, they had clearly not waited for the rice to cool down properly. We mentioned this to our waiter and she said that they had ran out of rice and had had to make a new batch at the last minute. Unacceptable. They should have let us know before making us wait for an hour for sushi with hot rice. After all this, they brought us ONE scoop of mochi ice cream on the house as an apology... FOR THREE PEOPLE. I can't believe the way this crap went down. We ordered some appetizers & dishes to share. Well things didn't come out in proper order which was the start of issues. Why am I still waiting for my appetizer & my friend has her entrée already? So what I ordered came out w/ tofu on it, which I didn't want but apparently is the default on the vegetarian options. Earlier, when I had explained I don't like spicy, don't eat any kind of peppers & they bring out some chili sauce to go w/ my entrée. Are you kidding me? So my bibimbap was tasteless & it was really disappointing, so kept adding soy sauce to it which wasn't helping. I asked her about another kind of sauce like peanut or something else to help this dish. She brought me something else spicy & then she never came back. SERIOUSLY??!!! You just decide that you're done waiting on us, really??!! Who does that? I was super annoyed at this point as she walked by the table several times ignoring us. The person who was bussing tables could tell something was wrong. She ended up helping me & getting a different sauce from the kitchen which was great & exactly what this dish needed. This place is pretty delicious. Good scores and reviews all around from my end. Reasonable prices, nice dining atmosphere, good for groups or small parties, and reasonably priced. Dumplings: awesome, especially since you can customize them. Steam or fried, an then what type of meat or veggie you would like to fill it with. Lots of flavor and you get 6 in your order. Appetizers: dumpling soup was awesome and the edamame was a healthy order pretty typical. Sushi: all delicious, didn't really have any preference, we tried several rolls and they were all pretty good. So we came here on a whim passing through the area. We assumed it was a seafood restaurant but really it is a sushi restaurant. We stayed anyway and tried the sushi, which was fresh. I also tried the pad Thai, which was also good. The menu consisted of mainly sushi, but also had Thai, Vietnamese, and Chinese food. These sections were more limited that the sushi section of menu. JP seafood has been the restaurant that got me to enjoy eating sushi. I think that the fish is reasonably fresh, I have not been able to find anything I have tried on the menu that I do not enjoy. For this type of food I would say that this restaurant is reasonably priced. read more
