The person who posted a negative review was actually reviewing the wrong business. My son has been attending JSK for 2 years. I am normally a bit suspect of these types of businesses because they run it thinking of business revenue first, students second. The owner needs to make a living and that it very respectful, but I have seen places try to squeeze money out of you with every opportunity. JSK focuses on the students first. Mr. Joe is a very honest, hard working owner who probably has the names of 250 students memorized. My son has taken some time off then wants to go back. There is no pressure, simply a hope for the students to progress physically and mentally. This place has won me over during the past 2 years. Look no further this place is absolutely amazing. The owners Kate and Joe are the kindest, friendliest, and most patient people I know. My boys were so apprehensive about starting and Mr. Joe went above and beyond to help settle their nerves. My boys have gained so much more confidence since starting JSK it's absolutely amazing. Not to mention how amazing both Kate and Joe handled classes during a pandemic. Now, back in person they made sure the children as well as the parents feel safe and secure. My son has been going to JSK Taekwondo since he was 5 years old. He is now 14 and a 2nd degree black belt. We were there when it started in a small studio gym off of Indian School. Our first day in investigating the place way back when, we show up and meet Kate/Mr. Joe. Then my son throws up all over their floor cause he ate something that didn't agree with him. She was very motherly and kind helping us feel comfortable despite him not feeling well and me being embarrassed. Then Joe comes over during class and kneels down to introduce himself to Alexander, despite him being only 5 years old treating him like a person, communicating with him in less than 5 min better than most school teachers I've witnessed. He has a way with kids that just amazing. That type of family feel was They've grown as a dojo over the years. I've watched many families come in and out of this Dojo over the years, but what I've been surprised about is that amount of loyalty that this Dojo brings about in the families that have been a part of it. Many of these kids have started as early as my son and have stayed in it past high school. You don't get that kind of loyalty unless a place is able to work/communicate with kids and their parents. The Family Feel of the place is what kept my son and I coming back to continue to learn/grow. It's not just about martial arts/physical activities. While there he has developed discipline that extends to both school and home. Where he was once shy and unsure of himself he now has improved socialization skills, a sense of himself and his self worth. While Covid 19 has been hard on everyone they have made many efforts to keep families involved even with ZOOM Classes. Looking forward to them reopening in July at the Phoenix Dojo. My grandchildren have been going to JSK for several years. The patience , confidence and discipline skills they have learned is amazing. Mr. Joe has this wonderful passion to teach and share his love of martial arts and he's such a great instructor. The kids love the camps, the game nights, the picnics, and even the regular classes where there is structure. Now that Lauro Hernandez, the solo teacher for the past year + is no longer with the company there is no reason to have my kids attend this school. The owners do not run this business with financial integrity. The owner, Kate, is aggressive, unkind and unprofessional. My kids have attended extra-curricular activities all across the valley for over 12 years and I have never experienced such terrible communication issues previous to my experience with this school. I had avoided martial arts for myself and family for years because of a fear I could not understand. After making the bold move to personally look into martial arts I found that the family that owns the center to be very friendly, welcoming, informative and knowledgeable. Joe the instructor is very patient with children, teens and adults. I find Joe to be a very good role model. The facility was very clean, the woman who I later learned is Kathy who works there as well to be very professional. It's a family run business and has a happy environment. I visited quite a few martial arts centers (which was scary for me) but found this one to be the best so far. Now that I have been a student at JSK TaeKwonDo for over a year now, I have even more perspective on JSK Taekwondo. If you know TaeKwonDo, you know the TaeKwonDo Tenants... Courtesy, Integrity, Perseverance, Self Control, and Indomitable Spirit. If you study anything else about TaeKwonDo, General Choi, and the history of the art, you will find that Mr. Joe Karstadt, owner and head instructor embodies all of the essences of the art of TaeKwonDo. He runs his classes with compassion not only for the student but to the art of TaeKwonDo. He balances discipline with compassion and understanding to the young student and in my case, the old student. He is relentless in his dedication to the school. Putting in tons of hours, practice and dedication to all aspects to the school, the students and to the art. He never makes you feel bad, and always is supportive of your progress. Me being at the age of almost 55, it is hard for me to pick up the level I was at when I was 17. Some instructors I think would be too quick to point out that this art is for the young and the fit, where Mr. Joe points out that it is an art that is suited for all ages, just as General Choi explains in his books on his creation. I can't say enough about how AMAZING this place is. My children are 11 and 7. My 11 year old is not very talented in sports, especially team sports, but I wanted him to be active. He was also having a difficult time in school socially and I wanted to find something to build up his self-confidence. Master Joe has a fabulous demeanor and the kids respond beautifully to him. He know EVERY SINGLE CHILD in his classes, no matter how many attend, and he calls each one of them by their name. He and his team of Black Belt helpers work with the kids to develop proper techniques and form. The kids advance according to their skill level, but no child is left behind. Master Joe even took time to go to my son's school classroom to expose the children to TaeKwon Do. It was an excellent experience for my son as he used him to demonstrate techniques to the class. I could tell my boy felt amazing after that session. This is a family run business, and Kate, Joe's wife and partner works with each family to determine which classes and events will spark your child's interest. Mr. Joe and his wife Kate are a great team! They are professional and so courteous. It is a great family facility. A year and a half ago our then 4 year old daughter took one class and said it was the best part of her day. She is now in intermediate classes and loves it still. The board she broke in her last belt advancement sits proudly at the entrance of our home (she got it on the second try!).I wish there was a way to describe Mr. Joe's teaching style that would have the highest praise. He is as good as a teacher gets and it is probably because he is a father, he gets kids and adults too!. We have done swim lessons, violin lessons, etc. and one thing is for sure about JSK Taekwondo. They are professional, consistent, and they get to know each of their families. Sometimes you go to places and you wonder if your money is worth it. At JSK Taekwondo it is. If you feel your kid needs a more challenging class, or something is not working well you can always talk to Mr. Joe and Kate they are polite and respectful. read more
