I've started using JTA to get to work downtown on the weekends. I recommend using the JTA app for the moat up to date information. Its cheaper to pay cash but you can buy fare tickets on the JTA app also. Always allow extra time! JTA is pretty good about being on time but life happens. I wish the Skyway extended further to Brooklyn and ran on the weekends. There typically is a few route options to get you to your destination. Inside the JTA HQ is a Conitti's coffee shop. I love the Skyway. We normally use it on the weekends for events downtown, but rode it for the first time during a weeknight when we went to Art Walk. Believe me, it is so much less stressful to park in a well lit place and just ride the Skyway downtown. (Trying to find a parking space downtown is a nightmare for me.) It's well worn, but clean and safe. Workers are present, and I frequently see police patrolling. There are people from all walks of life riding this. My only complaint is that it needs to be expanded to go to further areas in Jacksonville. Just downtown and San Marco isn't enough. It needs to go farther into Springfield, into Riverside, etc., maybe even across the river into Arlington. read more

I've used the JTA Skyway for a few events in the past and it's pretty cool. It's a great way to get around to some spots downtown and very cheap entertainment for my boyfriend who doesn't get out much. Just be aware of your surroundings when you ride as you can bump into some pretty sketchy looking people that may or may not have good intentions. It's pretty efficient for those major events throughout the year and I would definitely recommend trying it once. With the limited stops, it still leaves a lot to be desired for transport. Now if they can only expand it to service the surrounding downtown communities, the airport and possibly the entire Jacksonville area, it would be more useful and then I would probably take it all the time. read more

If it was $2 or thereabouts, I'd balk. Since it's free, there is NOTHING to complain about. Does it go everywhere? No. It wasn't meant to. Just like Miami's Metromover adjunct to Metrorail travels on a tightly defined loop in downtown Miami and skirts the harbor and the cruise terminal, Jacksonville's JTA Skyway has a compact layout necessitated by its more horizontally spread out downtown on the north side of the river and a portion of the commercial area, containing insurance company and medical buildings, that is on the south side of the river. Not only that, it makes for some great elevated views, it is air conditioned, it beats walking across a long bridge to get across the river, it will make you feel like a kid, and it can, and probably will, be expanded. Again, it's free. So quit bitching. read more

Not quite sure what the story is behind this monorail... I just don't understand how they can run this for free. As a tourist, we had no destination in mind but based on prior reviews, figured we would get some nice views. We took the monorail from the San Marco station (after a walk around the San Marci area), and took it over to Hemming Plaza. At Hemming Plaza, you get a really nice raised view of the plaza. If you walk around the corner, you will find the Jacksonville Visitors center. This itinerary is a nice little excursion that gives you a taste of the monorail system. Just keep in mind, the station is very quiet so it is better not to travel alone. Also note that the monorail is stated to run on weekdays only, and weekends only for special events. read more

Took the skyway yesterday to Southern Grill by Riverplace. Think of the El Train in Chicago but in smaller scale -- wait, no, think of those little shuttle trains they have at airports. Yeah, that's more like it. A 2 car people mover. There are several stops for the Skyway: Hemming Plaza, across from the Bus Stop on Bay Street and Julia Street, in Riverplace across the street from The Southern Grill, FCCJ Downtown campus, and several others. It's a great idea. Too bad it won't take me all the way to San Marco or Five Points. Need to take the trolley or drive my car to Five Points. San Marco is car only. Ho hum... Jacksonville is spread out. Our downtown is a downer. So many cool venues that are not used to their fullest potential. But I'm sure if the public transportation was made useful, then downtown life would be much more exciting. Especially now with the crappy economy. 50 cents is sooo not an excuse to stay indoors. See, picture this. A skyway that took someone from the Stadium to Hemming Plaza to the Landing to the Convention Center to Five Points and then to San Marco. Hardcore awesome, don't you think? And then the car-less fellows (yes we have those here, I always ended up dating them!) would have more reason to get out. And the more the merrier! This is a terrific thrill ride and it's FREE!!! The tram feels smallish, somewhat rickety and it tilts. I'm pretty sure that if you shift your weight to one side too quickly it may well flip over. It's Jacksonville's version of a Busch Gardens ride and I think it's awesome. It also gives good views over parts of downtown including the former Cohen's department store that has been renovated into City Hall. A few of the passengers I was onboard with didn't smell great, but it's hot outside!!! It's a great way to get around downtown and to get a feel for Jacksonville's landscape. Have never really had a chance (or desire) to ride the Skyway until One Spark. Great utilization of something I didn't really ever think had much of a place in Jacksonville. I don't work downtown and I'm not really downtown enough to be a huge fan of the Skyway, but parking at the Prime Osborn and getting off at Hemming Plaza was so much easier thanks to this little ride when I was headed downtown for One Spark. I think we will only see this continue to grow and downtown grows. It may be slow, but it will get there. read more

I BELIEVE I CAN FLY! The JTA Skyway is a free monorail train that travels along an elevated platform around downtown Jacksonville. It is a great way to see views of the river and surrounding areas. We had no particular destination in mind but just want to experience the Skyway. It was a really nice ride and best of all, it was free! Just keep in mind that riding this train is like taking public transportation in any major city. We found the station to actually be a bit deserted on a weekday morning and this may make a female rider uncomfortable. You may also encounter some interesting characters. Despite, any misgivings you may have, the experience is worth it because the people we met during our adventure were kind, engaging and very helpful. I could definitely see this train being popular during special downtown events. It is a great way to avoid having to park downtown. It in effort to support down town and give myself an urban feel, I take the Skyway whenever traveling to a downtown Jacksonville location that is near to the Hemming Plaza train stop. The service is Free and reliable. It is being used by very few business commuters and even fewer evening downtown diners. I use it 3 or 4 times each month. During the day it feels just fine. At night it can be creepy depending on what downtown activity is going on. When it's festive downtown, the Skyway is not too bad. When is dark and nothing going on the bring business or diner riders, it is not a comfortable feeling. read more

It's free, it's clean, it was fun to zip around the city at third story heights. Like a little crow we flitted above pedestrians, streets, in between tall buildings and even over the glittering St. John's River. The skyway eliminated parking problems for us and the people manning the stations were friendly and helpful. Maybe too helpful when a uniformed guard cheerfully bellowed for everyone to squeeze in cause he could fit about 20 more people in despite the fact that we were already sardined in there. But everyone showed their festival love and we made it work. There's room for improvement as far as daily use (wish it went to Riverside) but still, it's like the little engine that could--and I would ride it again. read more

I forget something in my car so I'm headed back to where I park and it dawned on me that I haven't written a review about the JTA SKYWAY!!. I take it twice a day and most of the time it's efficient. I normally don't have to wait more than 5-6 minutes for it to come back around from central station and sometimes I catch it as its just reaches the station. Second best thing, its FREE!! The third, it's relatively clean. The lady and gentleman do a great job of maintaining the overall cleanliness on the stations, I see them at least 3 time a week. It can get crowded during rush hour between 4-6, but with the cast of characters that take the skyway it can be quite entertaining. Yes, I'm a fan and recommend it. read more

On our way to One Spark, which was super exciting in itself, but I was super pumped about using the Skyway for the very first time. We took advantage of free event parking at the Prime Osborn and walked on up to the station. For a mere moment, I almost forgot I was in Jacksonville. Then you open your eyes and see this tiny, 2 car train and let out a tiny giggle. But, lemme tell ya, this thing was PACKED for One Spark! These tiny but mighty cars can hold quite a bit of folks! You have you choice of a few stops, and we easily exited right into the heart of Hemming Plaza. Now I heart Jax, but we all know the public transportation system leaves a lot to be desired here for non-driving folks. In my book, anything that is a step towards a better mass trans solution (Skyway, Riverside Trolley) is A-OK! It was pretty convenient and I am glad to know it's there! While parking is typically not the biggest issue downtown (especially for night events) I will totally jump on this train again. read more

Just started using the Skyway and love it. It is clean, efficient and on time. Beautiful view of river. Great for Southbank condo dwellers and hotel guests who want to make a quick trip to the urban core. Wish it went to Riverside and Everbank Field. It would be great if it connected up to a trolley system to San Marco Square and the Elbow on weekends. I was surprised to see so many riders. The thing has great potential and ITS FUN! Ahhhhh the poor little Skyway. It's about as progressive as it is fast, in the literal sense. This thing moves SLOWLY. It was built in order to propel Jacksonville into the "big city" mentality. Build a metro, people will come. Too bad the skyway does not go anywhere, really, and you have to drive to any of the stops to take it. Since this is a driving city anyway, why would someone drive however short or far it takes to get to the skyway only to take the extra 10-15 minutes to park, take the skyway about a mile and then walk to wherever they need to be. Of course, they will just drive all the way. Clearly! I think it is actually more of a colossal embarrassment to the city than anything else. No one uses it and its tiny, empty little cars slowly wind back and forth, reminding everyone of Jacksonville's lame attempt at growth. [We have grown marvelously in so many other ways, but this was NOT one of them.] Who in their right mind thought this would work?! And since they undoubtedly spent a ton of money building it, it's not like they can simply tear it down and start all over. So everyone pretends like it has some unlocked potential.... mmmkay.... if you say so. Oh well. Drunken nights that lead you to it can be somewhat exciting in the name of novelty. The route is not long as it does not go all over town, hopefully they can expand on the routes in the future. The views of the city and bridge are great, if you have kids take them for a joy ride and let them experience it and the sites they can see. Foe those people who complain that it does not have enough stops or it does not cover enough of the city, did you forget it is free? There are a ton of things that could make the skyway better but I don't think people give it enough credit. It's not something I use regularly because I'm typically downtown for something specific and since I have to drive down there anyway, I might as well park close (the downtown parking problems are also way overstated by most people but that's another story). Anyway, the skyway is a great asset to the city when something like One Spark or the Super Bowl is in town. I have only been on the Skyway a few times, when guests were in town. It is a fun little outing to ride from one end to the other and maybe check out a few places you wouldn't normally go to because of the downtown parking. It feels a little wobbly over the river. I agree with everyone else that it should be expanded- especially to the beach and St. John's Town Center. read more

I took this with my son, just because. Curious where it goes. Being with my son and seeing his eyes light up experiencing something new made the experience a 5, but other than that I couldnt find a good reason to ride it any other way. It serves a big purpose if you want to come from FCCJ to the library or downtown or if you are a person who has to work downtown NOT FAR from the waterfront area. If it was extended further I would give it a 4. Most people who use this are people who are low income, which is no problem with me, and I have been on it 4 times for my sons entertainment. Never a problem. They do keep it relatively clean compared to the transits I have been on in bigger cities nor does it smell as bad. I don't like the way it tilts when going around some corners. That is the only creepy thing that I truly hate about it. read more

The Skyway was built in the 1980s to help shoppers and employees who went downtown. Ironically, all of the road closures involved while the system was built hurt businesses so much that they abandoned downtown altogether. It isn't anything fancy, but it can be a convenient way to move around downtown, especially if you want to save money by parking farther away. And now that it's free, it's definitely a good way to get aerial perspectives of the skyline and river and everything. read more
