It is the Yin to my travelling Yang. Set into the rolling Cheshire hills in Englands green and pleasant land, is this real slice of coaching Inn in the villlage of Higher Burwardsley* Also close by are Peckforton & Beeston castles should you want to go rampant on the ramparts. With its Sandstone structure, open fires, Oak flooring and leafy beer garden with spectacular views over the Cheshire plain, the Pheasant is a true gem. They even have cobblestones out front and quite often people will roll up here on Horseback and tie the bridle reins to the wall. An Inn (Yes!! they also provide accommodation, see pix) for all seasons. They cater to all tastes and events and my family has used here for every occasion in the book and have yet to find fault but, it is not just a family place, No!! The way it is set out means that you can come here as a large group and pile in to the huge glass conservatory or arrive as a couple and get a table for two in one of the quiet nooks and crannies alongside a fireplace or just come alone and stand alongside the bar and chat with the regulars and meet their Labrador who will be lying at their feet. I have brought my Lab' "Dex" here multiple times, he likes to share a pint of Stout with me. The Pheasant always stocks four real ales (recognised for their well kept quality by CAMRA) plus a choice of mainstream beers and the wine list is always on point. They hold the AA Rossette & feature in the Michelin Good Pub and Egon RonayGuides. Important to me is that they use local produce in their kitchens and the menu is changed daily so look to the specials board at the bar. Even when it is not on the menu, just ask and they will rustle up a plate of thick locally cured Ham with a couple of poached eggs from the farm supported by thick crispy chips (fluffy on the inside) and garden peas. On Sundays I like to go here, fill my tank and then head off with Dex along The Sandstone Trail** or head down the hill to The Ice Cream Farm***. Dex, in tru Chocolate Labrador stylee always hits up the Choc chip. *Just as 'Worcesershire Sauce' is pronounced 'Wooster' in England so 'Burwardsley' is pronounced locally in Cheshire as 'Bosley'. They have a few big name artists taking to the stage in their performance space each year, with Thea Gilmore being one of the hot acts penned in for later this year! You can hire the venue for weddings and corporate events as they have a number of spaces available, so it's worth ringing them if you need somewhere to meet or party!

The bar / lounge area is great for relaxing and breakfast was lovely. They also serve dinner but we didn't eat there in the evenings. Our room (#6) was small and the shower wasn't great but as a place to rest your head it is fine. The staff (including bosscat Brookie) were so nice and friendly and that made such a difference. It's a short walk into the centre of Chester and there's a bus nearby to take you to the zoo and into Liverpool. We'd go back if we were staying in Chester again.

Bedrooms clean and comfortable, and the hotel has lots of amenities. I would have given this five stars if the free Wi-Fi had worked in the bedroom but the signal was too weak, although good in the lounge areas. Value for money is very good here, and I would certainly reccommend it. It is within walking distance of Bache and Chester stations, each about 15 minutes away.

The canapes were very nice, they were exactly what we ordered, but the sandwiches that we ordered had nuts in the bread, this was despite the fact that in a meeting with Sue we stressed we had dietary requirements, and I the Groom, has a serious nut allergy. This was very annoying however we made our complaint and the next round of cakes came out, they were very nice and there was more than enough, however the plates came out with Florentines which were mainly almonds. This was not what we ordered, it was not in the menu we agreed on, it was not in the contract. When I questioned Sue on 20/08 in a phone call, there was no actual apology or what I would consider an apology. There was complete denial over the conversation regarding nuts, Sue refused to speak to us in person at her premises and insisted that we go to the wedding venue instead, Sue believes it is our fault for not informing the venue even though she was contracted for the catering and the venue has no power in this situation. This part is totally bizarre, I have spoken to the venue and they are clueless about the actions of Sue Le Bonne. Sue did however remember that one guest has a cherry allergy and promised that this individual would get plain scones, in the end he ended up with no cherry (as did everyone else) unfortunately he suffered from nuts allergies and received the same nutty bread and Florentines too. Sue made it clear that she did not know, however she also made it clear that the Florentines were in a separate box and there was no cross contamination, but why do you need to worry about cross contamination if you know don't know about the nut allergy??? Please note that the above information is based on fact which can be proved with documentation and a recorded phone call.

The room was nice but we were on the ground floor by some stairs which was s little annoying in the morning as we got to hear lots of people huffing and puffing their way up and down them. Didn't notice at night though and didn't sleep particularly badly. Getting into the city involves a walk of over 30 minutes or figuring out the local public transport, which wasn't simple so if neither of them sounds appealing and you are not coming by car then staying here may not be for you. I was happy enough with the stay but would probably investigate other more central options first if visiting the city again.

I'm hoping that maybe my experience was a one-off. I made my order over the telephone, a bit later I got a call saying that they didn't have any pizzas. I amended my order and asked for something else. I then got a another call and they said they didn't have that either. In the end they said they did have it... I was completely confused by this point. Over half an hour later the food arrived - cold and was what looked like leftovers. I was not impressed. On the plus side, their website looks very professional and it seems that they even host corporate events. I might try them again another time, if I can bring myself to it.
