I'll lay you a wager that you can't find a service as impeccable with prices as reasonable as Zip & Tuck. We first came across them when my 6'5" tall, lanky husband (sorry baby!) bought a namebrand suit on the cheap, and needed it altered to fit his svelte frame. There was a complex bit of stitching at the back, so I wasn't able to use my trusty thimble on it with aplomb. We brought it into Zip & Tuck, and hey presto! 3 days later and £15 later, they'd not only taken in the back seamlessly (ha!), they'd lengthened the arms and trousers. He tried it on, and it looked like it had been individually tailored. Our second experience was with the fine ladies (who are trained in Costume Design and Fine Tailoring) saving our wedding day. And this is all true. I had bought a couture wedding dress from an American designer. It was made to fit my figure perfectly, snug, but not too snug -- just right. I hadn't tried the dress on in about a month, since my last fitting, when, a few days before the wedding, I tried it on to show some friends. The dress was huge at the waist, and the consequent gapping there was causing the thin straps to pull down against my shoulder blades, rubbing them raw and creating angry looking red skin (non tres sexy). I had, apparently, lost some weight in the run up to the wedding, making my fits-like-a-glove dress into a bride's nightmare. In a blind panic I wailed at my then-fiance to help, sew it with his teeth if necessary. He rushed the dress over to Zip & Tuck with literally a day and a half to spare. We brought the dress in at noon, and by 5pm, with a rush job done perfectly, the dress was done. They had even altered the straps slightly, which I hadn't asked them to do, and helped the dress fit even better. End result was a happy bride, and thus, a happy groom (shrieking bride = deaf groom). If you've been putting off an alteration or button catastrophe, stop by Zip & Tuck. The competent job will make you feel like a gazillion bucks.

I rang June in May to ask her for help with my friend's wedding dress…read more Unfortunately due to circumstances, my friend, Lizzie, had to move her wedding to her fiancé forward by over a year and, although she had a dress, it needed quite a few nips and tucks and alterations making. June's number was given to me by a few people telling me how amazing she was and they were right. June is so understanding and understood the time constraints we were facing. She was able to alter the dress in under 3 weeks and was so friendly and lovely throughout the whole process and made sure that Lizzie was comfortable the whole way through. 6 days before the wedding, Lizzie tried her dress on again and found out that it was too tight to go fully up (the medication she is on has made her quite bloated). Ringing June in a panic, I asked if she could think of anything. Within the hour, she had reassured me and the bride and made a beautiful bow to cover any gaps in the dress (the material her dress was made from meant we couldn't just 'let it out'). She really did go above and beyond and ensured that Lizzie both looked stunning on her wedding day and felt comfortable! There tailoring service is very common over there (you can find one on almost every street) and its very cheap. When she moved to Birmingham with me, I think one of the first things she asked me was if there was a place she could get her clothes adjusted. I honestly could not answer, it's not the sort of service I've ever really needed before. While mooching around the Indoor Market in the city centre we found City Tailoring. Prices might not be as cheap as in Brazil, but it is still pretty cheap, certainly not as expensive as I thought it would be. To shorten legs, for example, it will cost £7. They even fix leather jackets, I thought this would be much more expensive but it only costs around £15 to shorten the arms. It's not only shortening they do, they take care of all kinds of alterations, fit new buttons and zips, reline jackets they even make curtains. It's all really cheap and the guy there is a nice fella. There is a quick turnaround and they always look busy. Looks like a good place for any basic tailoring needs!

I've made enquiries here on a couple occasions about getting dresses altered and sleeves shortened. It has always surprised me that such alterations aren't exactly cheap. I guess having a Mom gifted in sewing has spoilt me somewhat! They clearly know what they are doing and I'm sure that they do a brilliant job. The shop feels a bit like a throw back to days when people made do and mended - with an old sewing machine permanently on display. I guess you can't scrimp when it comes to craftsmanship.

Recently moved from down the road into the old Lloyd's bank, I'm glad the village hasn't been left with a dead unit, and expanded to a ajoining bridal shop. Eugenie and Elisa are friendly and experienced with a lot to offer. Alterations work on a week turnover (there's always quite a queue), but they have been known to do shorter jobs when people ring up panicking. They do anything from turning up your trousers to fixing up your wedding dress, by hand and machine. They have a little changing room in the back of the shop, so you can try on to do a fitting- and they'll always be honest about fittings and costings. (just please take your stuff in clean!) If you can't find what your after squirrelled in the many nooks and crannies of the shop- just ask, as there's zips, cotton tapes, elastics, behind the till, and less popular odds and ends like rucksack clips upstairs.
