Happy Earth Month!…read more The first ever for me was to check out Kailua's Swap Meet which was held at Aikahi Elementary School, just driving out here is so worth the stunning view to escape the hustle and besides supporting all these small and local biz how could I not. This even is huge filled with so many vendors, live entertainment, and a garage booth as well is so wonderfully organized I took advantage of their prepaid parking which proceeds go directly back to the school super cool way to support for sure and if that was sold out you could hop on the trolley from Kainalu Elementary. I was certainly so impressed with the whole event and bravo for putting it all together as you can really see how the community came together and celebrate with so much support and sounds like they may have more events like this in the future woohoo! Missed out on this one? Follow them on Instagram @kailuaswapmeet a great way to eat, chill and support local! Thank you!

I am blessed to be part of this school district! The school has a lot of rules, but they really do…read morehave your keiki's best interest at heart! Rating wise - this school is top notch, 10/10 on GreatSchools.org; 5/5 star rating on School Digger for 2012 academic year; A c+ per Honolulu Magazine for this academic year (based on surveys given to students/parents and teachers). (I can understand why teachers are not as satisfied, they are getting a lot dumped on them from all this Common Core crud - a different subject all together!) All staff are very friendly! This year is definitely a challenge with the Common Core - so it is a particularly stressful time to get the needs met for the Core standards. It does take away a lot of fun and awesome class projects with all the testing, so I give a lot more patience and understanding in what is happening in the academia world. The playground is AWESOME! The school does it's best to keep it clean but not enough students or parents seem to care about keeping it that way. At least 3 or 4 times this year the playground has had graffiti issues, sand being dumped on slides; trash all around seems to be a daily issue (not just the kids but the parents too), etc... The school staff has had to clean up the messes, or parent volunteers. Weekends seems to be even worse as glass beer bottles litter the school grounds. Lets keep the grounds clean! The PTSA does a lot for the students. They have gotten quite an amazing list of after school activities gathered for the students to participate in for the Wednesdays. They contribute a lot of goodies towards the STAR parties, and also encourage a lot of different events. The school has the unofficial 'Tuesday Mom Club' - moms/community members who jump in and volunteer doing whatever is needed by the teachers; filing, sorting, copying, laminating, cutting/pasting, etc.... Just remember to sign in & out at the front office if you decide to help out! (Highly encouraged to sign in & out, just so the school knows how many visitors are present in case of any crisis.) You can also come in and have lunch with your kid! I do believe you have to give a courtesy heads up that you will be coming so the staff can ensure you are accommodated. For military folks - they do have community outreach - a Mil 1 Source rep at the school to help out with any of your needs. If both parents work, the school has an A+ program. Parents enrolling their keikis are able to drop off students early in the morning, and keep them later in the day to help mitigate having kids by themselves at home. So there is a general synopsis of this school. Check out their web page, the PTSA's FB page! See what's going on! :)

Also Want to thank the team that waits with my daughter after school, I appreciate your interactions with her. Your smiles and greeting when I pick her up always uplifts after a long day at a hectic office. Principal Swan is approachable. I enjoy the jokes he tells the kids during morning assembly. Mrs. Adams' welcoming and personable conversations, her sincere presence and infectious smile are missed. The Essentials teachers are inspiring. Mrs. Catala is great. Facilities are clean and presentable. The kids' garden is beautiful! Love the activities that allow parents and families to interact with each other and with staff (book fair, literacy day, Food truck Fridays, etc.). Thank you for making my kid's 2nd grade year inspiring, FUN and memorable for both of us. You rock!

She calls multiple times a day even when my son isn't at school so I know there is no type of emergency that she would need to contact me about at this point I'm genuinely curious if I need to take legal action or simply report her but in all honesty I've never ran into such a situation in any school I've dealt with. The school itself is great but that lady is definitely not.

I get updates via the seesaw app (available on the apple and google store. Why do I feel like an infomercial? ) I swear teachers never sleep, cause updates are between 10pm and 5am. Thank a teacher cause they help shape the future better then some parents. After reading this, I should attend the upcoming PTA meeting. Weekly as parents, our son get a homework assignment sheets. For us Navy folk, very similar to the POW for homework. There is also a monthly reminder/upcoming events sheet. I like this idea cause it helps me plan for events I would like to attend, in this case the last Ohana Fair. This event is an annual fair held on school grounds. It's a great time for kids and for parents to socialize with other parents. The teachers are out and about but mostly concentrating on running the booth. You don't come here for the food, you come for the stories and smiles. TIP: If you go to the annual Fair, parking is limited. Walk or ride a bike to the place. And if you drive, slow down for the small keikis because we know they like to run out between parked cars. Thank a teacher except the ones that teach CORE math?!?!? They confuse the hell out of me. 2+2=4 people!! Lastly if a teacher is reading this, thank you and stop looking for grammar errors. M

Although parking lot is one-way, it provides good (and safer) traffic flow and less school congestion. A/C buildings (except cafeteria), ample industrial bike racks in different areas, water fountain with bottle-filling station, all aspects of the school are very clean and well-maintained. I have zero complaints about their education system either. My son hasn't struggled (to the point of exhaustion) and fight me on homework. His teacher is always available to provide extra help should he need it. Lots of field trips allows students to gain knowledge outside of school property and create more fun memories. Very, VERY happy parent here! Mahalo to all faculties of this school for always providing excellency!

The trail is well kept, they have the much needed preventive erosion steps. These steps are great for the preservation of the trail as well as for those with "junk" shoes (lol). Sometimes the trail is a little muddy, with noticeable mosquitoes swarming around any uncovered/unprotected skin. Overall, the trail is easy/novice. There is an incline but not too difficult. You can rest if you need a breather. I have done this trail several times, with friends and with just my children. My kids run up the hill and leave me behind. There is a picnic table (with a nice view of the north shore and Kaena point) to the left when you reach the peak of the hill. Then you make your way through a short stroll through the Iron wood forest. Soon, you make your way to the first pillbox. Most people stop here and enjoy the graffiti art and the view. Its a nice view and relaxing spot. You can proceed further into the trail---go down after the pillbox and keep going to you come to the next pillbox. You can continue but I don't recommend it if you are not properly prepared. Come with a bottle of water, mosquito spray, shoes with descent traction, a camera and a bag for your rubbish to take out if you eat on this short trail. Take lots of photos, leave a very small to no footprint. Aloha and Enjoy.
