8/28/2026 I'm a hard core regular that has been patronizing since the 90's !!! Noticed a change last month and this month.... No more the regular employees that has been there for ages! The PRICES are insanely HIGH!!!! Like double the price on most items!!!! Some even more!!! The portions are extremely manini!!!!! Notice they updated the look of the menu and increased the prices by a lot!!!! Crazy HIGH!!! The guy serving me today was new cause he wasn't trained on the registers yet and couldn't touch it! I asked the lady ringing me up is this the new portion sizes? She said it's the same as before! Told her I have countless photos of my food and this is 1/2 the amount I usually get!!! Kabuki Restaurant and Delicatessen was established in HI in 1961 by Katsumi and Haruko Kazama in the Waimalu Shopping Plaza in Aiea, together with a handful of small businesses, with a vision where local people could gather, shop, and fulfill all their daily needs in one location. The popular, old-school Japanese eatery was known for its traditional Japanese dishes, fresh sushi, and extensive okazuya (deli) selection, which consistently drew long lines. It served breakfast, lunch, and dinner. After many successful years, the Covid pandemic slowed business down, and the owners were ready to retire but couldn't find anyone to take over the business. The main dine-in restaurant closed on 1/31/24, while the okazuya side remained opened. An electrical contractor by trade, John Afong, teamed up with Randall Hayashi to take over the okazuya side in Oct. 2019, and still operates today. This Yelp review is for the Kabuki okazuya (take-out Japanese comfort food). The long-standing Japanese delicatessen known for the popular okazuya & fresh sushi with a busy morning window for breakfast and lunch items, e.g., chow fun, cone sushi, fried chicken, and more. Note that items are not traditional Japanese okazuya, but more about what will sell based on value or price point, what is considered "old-school" local charm, and take-out food that can be packed for easy transport. After the closure of the dine-in restaurant, the okazuya take-out line was improved to protect it from the natural elements and became more efficient by having two lines when ordering at the counter. A checklist was placed so customers could write down items to be ordered and hand this list to the staff for fast-ordering. Bentos are still available until 11a. Some of our recent okazuya purchases are: * Maki sushi. Pieces are large with generous flavorful fillings, but they are square, so a mold is used, which is surprising. * Potato tempura. Doughy batter with generous piece of sweet potato. Put it in the air fryer, and the batter will be crispy. * Chow fun. Somewhat seasoned, a little mushy, and lacking with the add-ins. Doctored it by adding in spam, cabbage, kamaboko at home. * Long rice. Lacking in taste and add-ins. Doctored it up by adding in spam, cabbage, kamaboko at home. The long rice soured quickly. As with the chow fun, love that each was wrapped in a light brown paper for portion control and that they don't overflow onto the next item. * Corned beef hash patties. Crisp on the outside, but ratio of potatoes far exceeds the corned beef. The okazuya items sold at the Kabuki Restaurant were always favorites for us, especially during the pre-Covid times. We live on the east side, and we were aware of its popularity with those who lived nearby, as there were always long lines whenever we went. Granted there was an ownership change in 2019 and with the after-effects of the pandemic, things are no longer the same. Recent visits to Kabuki revealed that while the portion sizes of the okazuya items are still generous, they have lessened in inventory and are not as flavorful as they used to be. Their quality is not as good as before. What happened? I'm assuming new cooks with the management change? In its hey days, there were always long lines for the okazuya. Not any more, as there haven't been any lines so that we could just walk right through and order. Local folks are very nostalgic, as they remember how good things used to be and by continuing to patronize the business, hoping that their loyalty will allow the business to be there, instead of having memories. As there are no lines, the two staff ladies are eager to take your order, and they are quick and efficientin assisting you without any waiting time. Good time to ask questions about the okazuya. Hours of operation are daily from 5:30a to 1p. Cash only. Free parking available in the complex shopping center that is shared with other businesses. Today August 07, 2026, went to Kabuki Deli for okazu. Looks like there's new owners. Prices have gone way way up. I ordered 2 plain musubi at $ 1.75 ea, 2 times teri beef at $1.35 ea, 2 times gobo at 4.25 ea, 2 spam $2.70 ea, 2 times chorizo $4.25 ea,2 times chow mein noodles at$1.65 ea and 1 pc. Hash patty at 3.25. Total price was 39.01.... Inused to go there maybe once or twice a month. Sad to say I won't be going there anymore. I used to pay around $ 20.00 something for the same order before.The 2 orders of chow mein is really 1 order and the same for the gobo and teri beef. Lower your prices, you folks are serving less food. For a higher price, you will lose customers. You have no line outside like before. There was musubi's when I went there. So this place has been around for years and people always speak pretty highly of it. It's just a hole in the wall with no dine in. I must have come on an off day. It was my first time and I can honestly say I wouldn't come back. Service is quick and unfriendly. Food is expensive for the quality. Best thing I had was the fried chicken. 9-15-25 Picking up lunch for hub's aunty who became 90 today. Luckily when I arrived there was no line outside the door. So many things that looked good but the plate could only hold: Monday's special meatballs Cone sushi Nishime Shoyu chicken Egg They carefully put the meatballs in a little cup, wrapped the nishime separate from the other items. I could hear a man n the other line saying hot dog, hash, etc. Those sounded good. I also ordered 3 rolls of maki sushi: one for aunty, 1 for a friend and one for our own lunch. My friend emailed asking where the sushi was from cuz her husband said it was the biggest he ever saw and that it was delicious. I wish I could show you Aunty's plate before the lady packaged it in a plastic bag cuz it was heavy. I hope she liked it. Strictly business, no pleasantries or smiles. You stand inside the doorway and wait to go in either the right or left line cafeteria style- you look, say what you want then pay, cash only. What happened to this place? After coming here for years, I was truly disappointed today. As usual, I just picked up a few items for my lunch and my plate must've weighed only a few ounces but the total was almost $21!!! Kimpira Gobo, 2pcs of Chorizo which was 1/4 of a whole sausage, and 2 slivers of Halibut! The new door works great so I guess they needed to raise their prices to pay for it! My husband & I are suckers for okazuya's. We always passed by this place and we finally decided to give it a try. When we first arrived they had a line (always a sign that it'll be good). They also provided paper menus and pencils so you could figure out your order while waiting. We handed over our paper order to the cashier and she started on our plate. They were quick and packed everything really well so it wouldn't leak onto each other. They have a lot of options from maki sushi, fried chicken, gobo, adobo, etc. We tried a little bit of everything. The fried chicken was super crispy & fresh which I liked. It was also cooked all the way through. Some places don't cook their chicken all the way through. The gobo was spicy for some reason but to be fair, it was my first time eating it. My husband likes gobo and he said it was spicy also, or packed a bit of heat. I seen that a lot of people got the adobo, so being a Filipino, I had to try for myself. It was really tender pieces pork that were falling apart. But had a strong vinegar taste. I personally liked it. The Friday special was stir fry eggplant so I also got that. It was Chinese eggplant cooked in a brown sauce w/ pieces of meat. Price wise, it was typical pricing for okazuya in Oahu. Anytime I go eat okazuya, I can't but help to think about my Yelp buddy- Bruddah Dan O., as he is da KING of okazuya! Bruddah Dan is da man for okazuya, as he's been to a lot of okazuya joints (including Kabuki), and has generously shared with me some of his recommendations/favorite okazuya joints. On my recent okazuya adventures, da Kabuki Restaurant was targeted, as I was enticed by a marinaded frrrrrried chicken that my Yelp buddy - Donna O. had posted on Yelp not too long ago. Where is the Kabuki Restaurant??? If ya know where the Waimalu Shopping Center is, you can find the Kabuki restaurant among the various eateries at this shopping complex in Aiea. Upon walking into the restaurant, both ladies working the okazuya counter was already helping some folks, but after waiting behind a lady, it was my turn. I proceeded to order da following items- 1. Frrrrrrried Chicken ($3.50 per piece), I got two. Unfortunately for me, I didn't see that Marinated Frrrrrried Chicken that by Yelp buddy - Donna O. had talked about. 2. Shoyu Chicken ($3.50 per piece). 3. Cone Sushi ($2.40). 4. Shrimp Tempura ($2.50). 5. Potato Tempura ($2.25). 6. Egg Omelet ($1.40). What can I say about the grub?? If you like old skool comfort food, Kabuki Okazuya clearly meets the old skool joints. Nothing fancy about the food. I found some items better than others. I LOVED the Shoyu Chicken, but the Fried Chicken appeared over cooked & hard. I really dug the Cone Sushi, and of course the tempura items were to die for! I've read that this restaurant has been here forever. Until recently, I hadn't even really been past the airport because I am definitely a townie. Now that I work on the west side. I'm always looking for places to pit stop on my way to or from work. Kabuki offers okazu in the mornings and it's a great place for me to stop before work to pick up food. Kabuki is a full blown restaurant, but in the mornings, they have an okazuya in the front part of the restaurant. It's blocked off too so you can't really see inside. There were a couple people coming in and out while I was there. But there aren't any crazy lines like there are at other okazuyas. There are two lines that start in the middle, each going in opposite directions. The ladies working the okazu line and cashiering are very nice and patient. I felt like they genuinely were grateful for my business and their friendliness makes me want to return even though I prefer the taste at other places. I chose the chow fun, the nishime, Teri beef and a fried shrimp. The fried shrimp was on the sweet side and they are very generous with the chow fun. The plate was $13, which is pretty affordable I think. I particularly liked that they wrap the saucy items in parchment paper. It doesn't really help with containing the sauce completely, but it makes the plate look nice. It's a nice touch. There is plenty of parking in the mornings and the service was quick, just how I like it. Food was coming out of the kitchen hot and fresh. I think I'll be back to try other things. Wifey wanted sushi, and tea cookies. I dropped her off at Kabukis and I went to Chun Wah Kam near by to pick up the tea cookies. We haven't been to Kabukis since they close their dine in. She bought cone sushi, maki sushi, vegetable tempura and potato tempura. I ate the vegetable tempura. It was delicious. Good tempura crispness , maybe just a little doughy. I sadly did not take any photos of our bentos but what I have to at least rave about is how I was able to call less than 24 hours in advance for a bento party order of 24 (13 A and 11 B bento). While it is cash only, I really appreciated the no hassle service. Called in around 11am on Monday and scheduled pick up for Tuesday at 1030am (sure that's really close 24 hours in advance but some places would say that's too late). Drove down before they closed at 1pm and paid in full. Since this was my first time even ordering from this long standing establishment, I was intrigued with the decor inside. Buffet hot plate style to-go in front with Japanese sliding doors over the windows to give the effect of a home in traditional Japan, very cool. Staff is so friendly, I swear they love what they do and I hope they are compensated well because they all have such great attitudes. Rambling done. I always wondered why the line was out the door here. Obviously most of their customers live in the area. Probably going to be my first and last time here. I tried some of their items and still found it just ok. Can't beat Gulick Deli as far as selection and flavor. Their prices are also on par with Gulick but if you crave this okazu items then I'm biased with Gulick. We love Kabuki Okazuya! When I think of Okazuya, I usually compare other places to the offerings at Kabuki. There are many other places on the island that serve this type of food, but my bias always steers me back here. I appreciate their menu being on the smaller side so it isn't too overwhelming to come to my decision. I'm the type that wants everything, so it's hard for me to go into a place that has endless options. Foodie problems... haha! :( Service is quick and to the point here. Just wait in line, walk up when you're called, and point to the things you want. There's a menu board on the wall that could help guide you, but the simplest rule of thumb is to choose what looks good that day. Phone orders are also welcomed! Popular items are hard to identify since there's a nice blend of local & Japanese okazu to suit different taste preferences. Our faves start with the fried halibut - a simple piece of fish that's lightly breaded, salted, and fried. Then next is the gobo! This really grew on me over the years of getting old lol I love the savory crunch that has a kick of spice, depending on the bite. Third fave is the long rice noodles and shoyu chicken. I can't ever get a plate without one of the two, so they both land as my third favorite lol. There's also daily specials that remain the same week after week. Thankfully for me, they have all my faves everyday! Admittedly, it would be nice to see different specials from time to time. Haven't been to Kabuki Restaurant in Waimalu for quite awhile. After recently reconnecting with them, I've noticed their okazuya is still tasty & reasonably priced. The restaurant might be closed but their okazuya window is still open. The ladies are always helpful and smiling so it makes it easy to place your order without being rushed. They're always saying, "take your time" even when there is a long line out the door. I visited yesterday after exercise class and there were 4 people ahead of me. The wait time wasn't that long...in fact I got out before the guy who was in front of me even finished selecting his choices. I spent just over $50 for 8 cone sushi, 4 hash, 2 egg, 4 vegetable tempura & a roll maki sushi. The counter area is clean and all the food looks tasty. Huge parking lot out front that is shared by all the tenants at the Waimalu Shopping Center. Will be back in the near future. When I'm in the area, kabuki is my go to okazuya place. Some of my favorites are maki, chow fun and nishime. Usually there's a line when we go so expect to wait maybe 10-20 mins when it's busy. The restaurant still closed unfortunately but I used to love coming here for lunch. read more

OMG nooooo!!! I was thinking of taking my friend to this restaurant for his birthday next month, and just read on the question and answer if their restaurant is still open, and saw two answers mentioning that they permanently closed on January 28, 2024. I called Kabuki, and to my relief, the Okazuya side is still open. Yay! I noticed I didn't write a review for this restaurant yet, and after a string of mediocre service or food at other places this past month, I needed to write about somewhere that will lead myself and you yelpers to enjoy and saw this restarant pop up in my pending places to review. I love this place, especially the pork konbu, cone sushi and namasu. They are the best okazuya I could find, and I cannot find anywhere that serves delicious pork konbu like they do, so I have to make a special early morning trip just to get it. Although it says they close at 1p, they are basically out of the good stuff by 11a or sometimes, if I'm lucky, before noon. The last time I went, although a bit salty, I was fortunate to have the last two remaining pieces available for me to enjoy. Now that I am writing this, I am craving for their food and want to go sometime this week when I can wake up and drive out early to get it. There is nowhere to sit and enjoy their food, so I usually pick up to bring home. There is always a line, and only 4 people can be in the store at one time. Also, CASH only. There is an ASB ATM outside, in front of the strip of stores if you don't have enough cash because buying each item can add up. Lots of parking since it is in the waimalu shopping center. read more

Wow it's been awhile since we've been to kabuki, had a line in the am filled out the sheet for easier ordering but if possible best to phone order your order and go in and pick up you can skip the line, Noodles come in pint $7 or quart size $12 and they pack it in there! All had good flavor really liked the long rice noodles! Everything was so tasty especially loved the halibut so soft and buttery never had a fried fish okazuya definitely must try it if you like fish. Happy New Year everyone! First 2024 review goes to Kabuki Okazuya. Journey began Wednesday morning. Two bright lights flashing in unison every other second. I read sign outside Okazuya open seven days a week. Taken by surprise while driving to work, west to east via Kamehameha Hwy. Too late for me to turn around. I will keep in mind. Showed up next day on Thursday morning at 6:30 a.m. There were two ladies with a couple of kids perusing what to order. Menu items, certain items must be pre ordered with phone number, business hours 5:30 a.m.-1 p.m. Beat the morning rush. Take a pencil and order form. Mark quantity in the box next to selections you'd like on order form. Bentos served until 11 a.m. I split the meals on Thursday and Friday for breakfast, mid morning snack, and lunch. Bento B $9.25 Verdict: Teri beef: thinly sliced, tender, not sweet, easy to pull apart with hashi and teeth. My type of teri beef. Loved it! I wish this would be available to buy on menu list. Gobo: Kick in every bite filled with some spiciness. Loved slight crunch. Grand wake up call. Rice: Fresh, came in handy to relieve spiciness from gobo. Kamaboko, smaller version of egg omelet and spam were tasty. Shrimp tempura was my least favorite. Half an inch thick of yellow orange batter coated and masked the perfectly cooked shrimp. Appearance and taste reminded me of Tanaka Saimin. I prefer a lighter, crispy and flaky batter. Returned on Friday morning and ordered one each: Butterfish: Marinated in shoyu or soy sauce. Savory and boneless. My fave! Chow Mein: Oily. Noodles were extra moist. I love and prefer slightly drier noodles. Cone Sushi: Too much rice vinegar. Some of the rice and carrots fell out of huge tofu or bean curd. I love a tasty cone sushi that doesn't fall all over the place. Corned Beef Hash Patty: My least liked item. Quite oily. Barely tasted corn beef. Higher ratio of potatoes to corn beef. Egg Omelet: Egg was larger than the one inside bento. Delicious! Fried Chicken: Juices were sealed in. Moist and tender on inside. Crispy skin on the outside. Long Rice: Tasty. Mac Salad: Second to the last and least enjoyed. Tuna overpowered elbow macaroni and mayonnaise. Potato Tempura: Yellow, sweet potato covered in half an inch, thick, oily, orange yellow batter. I prefer lighter, crispy, and flaky. Vegetable Tempura: My fave for deep fried appetizer! Winner! If I have to make my own bento, must haves: 1 Butterfish 1 Cone Sushi 1 Egg Omelet 1 Gobo 1 Fried Chicken 1 Long Rice 1 Teri Beef 1 Vegetable Tempura Bright smiles and fabulous customer service during early mornings makes a huge difference for those hangry/hungry. We came by after being snubbed by Chun Wah Kam and after eating at Shiro's Saimin...needed food for the dad after all. There's a line to get in all the time here, so it must be good, right? I've eaten here like 30 years ago in the restaurant area when I was a lot younger (before Yelp) but didn't have any experience eating anything from the Okazu line. There's a little slip of paper and pencils in a box outside. You have to fill out what you want, then continue to wait in line. Store only takes 4 people inside at a time, which is nice because the inside is very small. Claustrophobics like myself appreciate this fact. Up at the counter you read the woman what you want. The woman was older, Asian, and had a yippy voice like a small dog barking out orders, the problem was, she was confusing the person who was putting the stuff into the take out container. "Two egg omelets!" "Two cone sushi" yes, "two! Two cone sushi" "Spam! Ume! Two shimp, two shrimp tempura!" What the heck, woman! Just call out the order correctly!!! When I got home she charged me for the Spam Musubi but it was never given to me. Now for the food. Shrimp Tempura ($1.85 each) - are you kidding me? Puffed up shrimp in a huge greasy blanket of Bisquick? I laughed when I got them back home, I thought they were Pigs in a Blanket! The shrimps inside were pretty anemic, hence the giant coat of coating. Cone Sushi ($1.95 each) - the most palatable thing in the whole order. The cones were nice and big and the aburage juicy and the rice flavored just right. I would only buy this the next time, nothing else. Chow Fun Noodles ($1.75) - small luau desert style paper dish. Flavored very strangely, like old pork and old oil. I should have known not to order it after I saw it in the window, looked sketch. Egg Omelet ($1.10) - they should be called Egg rolletes because they are small! The flavor was just OK, nothing special. Nori Ume Musubi ($1.10) - big fat F, crumbly cold dried rice. I will throw this outside for the birds to eat as I am not risking an elevation in my blood sugar for such horrible return. What do people see in this place, aside from the fact that it's pretty cheap with some sketchy food? Maybe because of the cone sushi? My son said the whole place smelled like a men's urinal, I didn't notice until I brought the take out cardboard container home, it smelled funny so I sniffed the container, it did smell like a urinal! I think the paper products absorbed some of the smells in the restaurant; that puts a very unpleasant spin on things. It's CASH ONLY, and things add up. For 9 items I got charged $14.08, when it should have been 8 items. Check your things before you leave the place. RETURN FACTOR: only for the cone sushi, which I will ask to be placed in my own take-out container. read more

Always order the same - Chow Fun, Nishime, Halibut & Veg Tempura. Nishime is lightly flavored; Halibut tastes like fried butterfish. Gobo, Hamburger patty is good too. Don't like their Shrimp Temp - batter is spongy/bready. At least Veg Temp is a little crisp around the edges. read more
