A haven from the hail and thunderstorm outside

Instead of struggling with a reservation at the coveted El Tovar Hotel (which was fully booked within minutes of the 12-month booking advancement), Kachina offers the same proximity to the rim of the Grand Canyon without the sweat and tears. It's within walking distance to the El Tovar Hotel, in case you want to dine there.

If you don't mind driving around for half an hour so you can finally find a place to park that's 0.6 miles from your hotel, and also don't mind a marginally-functional WiFi, this place is actually pretty nice , and located near the south rim of the canyon. Hey, here's an idea-- why not have reserved parking for hotel guests (even if you're only paying upwards of $250/night to stay there)** So 3.5 stars for the hotel and minus 2 for the parking situation and broken WiFi **As a matter of fact, parking is a challenge everywhere in the park.

We spent the night on our way home from New Mexico the room was nice not for the price we paid they are more or less like a best western room style nothing fancy for what we paid a night $300 including park entrance fee. the parking sucks if your not there early it could be a long walk to your room and the lighting is horrible walking through the parking lot make sure you have a flashlight if you arrive at 7pm . but I recommend you ask for the view facing the canyon that way you can take up the beautiful sunset and sun rise ,room was clean would try to get more information if your thinking above booking see if they have any discounts available this was our first time here and was the only rooms available at the time in all I would probably stay here again but book far in advance

El Tovar & Kachina - watch your step!

I guess I can say thanks to a major reservation glitch with the neighboring El Tovar Hotel and a very considerate Desk Manager. We had a very pleasant and unexpected stay at the Kachina Lodge. Considering a significant cost savings, we weren't lacking any comforts and provided "a room with a view." Kachina Lodge like El Tovar, holds its own unique timestamp in architectural charm & style. Kachina is not nearly as old as the El Tovar, but it boasts a classic, well maintained 60's motif. Which is better considering the creaks heard in the halls of the El Tovar. We found parking outside our room to be sparse, often requiring a long walk.

We stayed at the Bright Angel Lodge our first night at the Grand Canyon and the Kachina Lodge our second night. I have to say the Kachina Lodge was a huge upgrade from the BAL. For starters our room actually had air condition (although we couldn't get it to cool down until night time). Our room also had an ironing board (which is a necessity when living out of a suitcase on vacation) and a Keurig with K-cups in the bedroom. We had a partial view of the South Rim from our room on the second floor! My only real complaint was the maid service. On Sunday, check-out time isn't even until 11am. You could hear the maids out in the hall starting around 6-7am. By 8:30am they were vacuuming up and down the hallway (we were trying to sleep in a little later since we had an 8 hour drive home). They also knocked and tried to come into our room twice before 11:00. It was extremely annoying and hard to relax and enjoy our last morning there. Also was kind of annoying to pay for a room with a view and literally have a tree right in the way.

We stayed here for convenience then to drive to a farther hotel. The view is amazing even with just a partial view. Food options are limited to the restaurant on the main hotel (Tovar hotel) and a concession stand type of food vendor in the park. They both do take out and the hotel restaurant does reservation although the website said full we were able to walk in and wait. The lodge however was nice but the temp wouldn't go above 73 degree the whole night. The worst part unfortunately was the parking situation. They are very limited space and is first come first serve. If you do not get a parking spot at the lodge you have to park in the visitor center. Which was pretty much a guarantee that your car was most likely going to be hit since if was a high traffic area since it's not only used for the hotel but also visitors of the Grand Canyon. Overall, the view was amazing and so convenient but the parking situation was the worst I've ever dealt with for a hotel.

Excellent location on South Rim of Grand Canyon My husband and I stayed here two nights. We paid extra for a view of the Grand Canyon (rather than the parking lot) and it was well worth the extra expense. During the more than 30 years we have lived in Arizona, we have stayed in all the lodges/cabins within Grand Canyon NP South Rim. A second (or third) floor canyon view room at Kachina Lodge is now our favorite. (A similar room at Thunderbird Lodge next door would probably be our second choice.) The view from our room was incredible, as you can see from the photos. Also, very importantly, the lodge is extremely quiet. Nobody has a reason to enter into this lodge unless they are renting a room there. Contrast Kachina (or Thunderbird) with the iconic historic El Tovar Lodge. Everybody who visits the South Rim visits El Tovar to see the lovely architecture, sit in the two-story lobby, visit the great bar (which has a back patio), the fine dining restaurant, the gift shop, the public restrooms, etc. Noisy tourists (including my husband and myself) are constantly traipsing through El Tovar. (Don't consider a first floor El Tovar room if you don't like hall traffic). Also, most rooms at El Tovar look out at a parking lot or a lawn, but not the canyon. I am sure if you book a year in advance you could get a canyon view room at El Tovar, but you would not be as close to the rim as at Kachina or Thunderbird. (We booked our Kachina canyon view room 11 months in advance.) Our room at Kachina was comfortable. It might have been a tiny bit dated. El Tovar rooms are probably fancier. The room was not large. We had two queen beds, a desk, a somewhat-padded desk chair, closet, fridge, Keurig coffee maker with coffee and tea, glass glasses etc. We did not have a sofa, loveseat, or easy chair. The wall lamp between the beds should have had individual controls not one master switch. To change the bedside lighting you had to click to get the right light on and the left off, click again for the left light on and right off, click again for both lights to be on, click again for both lights to be off. The small rotating switch would not be good for people with arthritis. Kachina has a lovely sitting room on the first floor with comfortable cushioned furniture, and large picture windows overlooking a lawn and the sidewalk along the edge of the Grand Canyon. Two young women (possibly staff) were playing chess with the complimentary chess set. Nobody else stopped during our 90 minute visit. We wish we had discovered this lovely lounge earlier. The lighting was good for reading. It was quiet, peaceful and scenic. Kachina is a couple minutes walk to the best restaurants in GCNP South Rim: El Tovar dining room, the Arizona Steakhouse, and Bright Angel Cafe (all with table service) and the Bright Angel ice cream shop (no tables). Kachina is also a couple minutes walk from the bar at El Tovar (which also serves appetizers) and the Bright Angel Saloon. Kachina is located just up the hill (a 5-7 minute walk) from the train station and the shuttle bus stop. Kachina is located within easy walking distance of Vercamps, Hopi House, Lookout Studio, Kolb Studio, the Bright Angel Trailhead, the Hermit Road busstop. If you take the shuttle bus from the Kachina Lodge, you can get to Maswick Lodge (which has a very good pizza/beer pub) plus an average restaurant without table service or the shopping plaza containing the grocery/general store and the Yavapai Lodge which has two average restaurants (both without table service) and a bar with an outdoor patio. The parking outside Kachina, Bright Angel, Thunderbird and El Tovar is limited.

We loved visiting the Grand Canyon. During our 3 day, 2 night stay we made the Kachina Lodge our home away from home. During Covid, this park has limited restaurants and shuttle services. We found the Kachina conveniently located near things that were opened. We were able to explore the park and make it back to the lodge without any problems. Our room was quiet, clean, and comfortable. One afternoon we came back to the lodge to find elk grazing on plants right outside the entrance. The only downside is parking. It was very difficult to find parking near the lodge. We were fortunate enough to get a space right in front and we decided to just leave our car there and walk everywhere. We were afraid that if we moved our car, we'd have to park really far away. All in all it was a pretty nice place to stay.

Stayed at Kachina Lodge for five nights. Checking in and out went very smoothly (Kachina guests check in at El Tovar) . I paid for a canyon-side room with a partial view and requested the 2nd floor, which was not guaranteed. As it turned out, I did get a 2nd-floor room (king-sized bed) with a lovely view. The room felt very private; there were sheer curtains if you wanted to still see the view but add a little privacy. I left all curtains open on two nights due to the full moon lighting up the canyon and sky. I stayed in Tusayan in April for four nights and while I had no problem driving in and out of the park, it was wonderful this time to have a room to return to during the day to rest or change before heading out again. One night I was ill and needed to sleep in and take it easy till the next afternoon, but I just enjoyed the view and didn't feel like I was missing out on the canyon since it was right outside my window. Yes, the lodge is dated (built in the seventies). Yes, the rooms are small and the bathroom smaller. But the room had everything I needed, and everything worked fine. Sheets and towels looked older but were clean; the only recommendation I have for the cleaning crew would be to remove fingerprints from the windows--after all, the view is one of the selling points (location, of course, is the other). I took a cloth and cleaned them myself on arrival, and as I did not request service during my stay I never spoke to the housekeeping staff about this. I would not hesitate to stay at this lodge again.

It's also really conveniently located, just 10-15 minutes outside of the park, but far enough away to give some flexibility with food and hotel options. Internet was alright, pretty "meh" quality, but it worked. This particular location was honestly super spacious. We ended up in the adults only wing, and our room was huge. We had a separate seating area with a TV, desk and couch that could pull out to become a bed. There was also a small little kitchen nook with a microwave, fridge, sink and coffeemaker. I don't have children so the extra space doesn't really matter much to me, however, if I did this would have been a really nice place to stay. Breakfast: Breakfast was the standard holiday inn express fare. It had pancakes, eggs, pastries, cereals, some fruits, yogurt, and either bacon or sausage. Seating was really limited, but you can always take your food back to your room. Parking: Parking seemed plentiful and was pretty close to the hotel. Parking is free.

Due to a water problem in the Grand Canyon Village our reservation at Yavapai Lodge was cancelled…read moreand we were moved to the Holiday Inn. That part was not Holiday Inns fault. But we paid for a King bed at Yavapai; we got two queens at the Holiday Inn. When our room was cleaned they took our towels and did not leave any new ones. The coffee maker spilled water all over the counter top. The second night we went to the restaurant and had to wait 35 minutes to be seated while looking at a half empty restaurant. The noise level was high, due to being able to hear everyone's door down the hall opening and closing. I would not stay there again!
