I'm still thinking about the vegan Moroccan spiced vegetable soup I had here, all. The funny thing…read moreis, I think I landed in this same soup shop six years ago when I was in Helsinki. A few noteworthy things about this eatery tucked into the historic old Market Hall: -they offer a beautiful bow of salmon soup which appears to be a Finnish staple- my sister said it was delicious (I have a fish allergy otherwise I'd know firsthand) -they also offer a vegan/vegetarian option for soup and were very confident in its ingredients/ navigating allergies -my Moroccan veggie soup was vegan, packed with flavor, zucchini, carrots and topped with a lemon cream -they offer bottles of water and glasses for all tables as well as some tasty complimentary bread and herbed oil

After you pay at the front, they serve you water and your chosen soup (the honey went with the salmon while I went with the regular soup option) and you're able to choose your bread at the front as well if you'd like any. The service was prompt and the soup was good. Nothing life changing, but a solid soup with a nice seating area so I could see them doing very well in the winter. All in all, I could absolutely see us coming back and would recommend it if you're looking for soup at this food hall.

Highly recommend. I came here based on reviews and I'm glad I did. It is an odd location (top floor…read moreof a shopping mall) but don't let that put you off. I came alone, so I didn't get one of the tables with a view, but that's just what happens with travelling alone sometimes. I made a reservation to be sure as I wanted 7pm on a Saturday night. If you like Nordic food then this place will definitely make you happy. Toast skagen to start: comes in two sizes, I took the small and it was very generous. Whitefish, pureed potatoes and cauliflower for the main. Lovely cream sauce and the potatoes and fish were perfect. I didn't like the grilled cauliflower at all. Strawberry and rhubarb fraisier for pudding even though I was already stuffed. Very good service. I would return in a minute if I ever visit Helsinki again.

You order at the bar, they give you a table sign and bring out the food. So I did not get a real resistant feel, though it was a real restaurant price. I had the white fish with potatoes and cauliflower and one glass of wine for lunch at around 40 euros. The fish was fine - I had much better the night before at a bistro - and the potatoes and cauliflower were fine if bland. So not worth the trip or money for me.

This eatery prepares a few selections daily, so the menu is always changing (the way it should be), and left up to the whims of the owners and cooks. Walk in, get in line, pay attention to the ordering process. The staff does speak English but most guests appear to be locals on their lunch breaks. We sat at a table that had a few open seats which gave us the opportunity to chat with the locals a little bit. We opted for the soup and salad, and the portions were very generous. The soup was a summer soup with lots of cauliflower and dill - Delicious! It is important to note that all the foods we ate were whole foods (not processed), with lots of flavor. A little bit goes a long way to quenching your hunger. Being someone who usually has no problem clearing a plate it was a struggle to make my way to the bottom of the soup bowl despite how delicious it was. You won't be hungry for a long while after eating either. The eatery is on the small side, so if you see a line outside you may not be able to find a place to sit. Don't let that stop you from trying this place - It seemed like they were set up for take-out, and there are plenty of parks nearby to have a picnic. We really enjoyed our meal here from a number of different perspectives. Staff was warm and friendly despite a modest language barrier and us not knowing the ordering format. The locals that we shared our table with had been equally warm and friendly. The food speaks for itself. Five stars on all accounts. It is places like this that serve to remind us what our own hometown is lacking. There is a good chance I would eat here every day if I could.

And Karl Fazer is famous for being a chocolatier, so Fazer chocolate is a must try, too. Fortunately for me, Karl Fazer Cafe was located right across from my hotel, so I had easy access to chocolate and coffee here. The cafe was very popular, and what's nice is that they are open the entire day, serving meals or something lighter. They also have a chocolate shop on one side of the cafe that you can grab and go. For one of my visits here, I tried the geisha dessert, which is a specialty, along with a Fazer mocha. They were both good, and I was pleasantly surprised that the geisha dessert was a mix of chocolate and hazelnut since the lilac color threw me off, so was afraid it would be a fruity dessert. But it turned out to be better than expected. Another visit, I tried the cinnamon bun, which was solid. It wasn't the best in town, but solid - and definitely better than anything I'd ever get back home. If you're in Helsinki, Karl Fazer is a name you'll hear - and you'll need to try the famous chocolate and pay a visit to the first cafe of the country. It's easily walking distance to many sites as it's in the city center, and has outdoor seating. Glad to have checked out a place of Finnish history.
