    Spiderman Cut Roll
    Serinee T.

This was my first time here as I was intrigued by the affordable menu. It felt like 30ish minutes had passed before we got anything sent to our table despite a pretty empty restaurant at dinner time. We got the seaweed salad, gyoza, 8-piece sushi set, Spiderman roll, and Fire roll. Food was good, but there was too much rice in the nigiri and the fish came to our table sitting so long on the rice that it tasted unappetizing. The staff are friendly and kind, but the service was very slow and understaffed. Took a while for us to flag a server down a few times. I'm hesitant to return if this was the service when the place wasn't that busy. Environment: Really cute decor and comfortable seating in the dining area. Bathrooms, however, were very dirty and smelly unfortunately. All in all, the affordable menu and positive reviews intrigued us. We're hesitant to return again from this experience.

I was surprised to see that all of their lunch specials are under $20! It's such a great value, especially considering the quality and portion sizes. They also have some really great happy hour deals from 4:30-6:00 PM. Everything we ordered was fresh. The sushi rolls were delicious, the sashimi practically melted in my mouth, and the khao soi broth was incredibly flavorful. The restaurant is clean, spacious, and there's plenty of parking.

We were searching for sushi places in the area to eat with my family and this place popped up. We came at around 1230pm on a Saturday and we were the only party there. We ordered a bunch of food including the Kids Boat, Chirashi Bowl, Sashimi Salad, Rolls, Udon, appetizers and some beers. The Chirashi Bowl was a bit disappointing. Limited variety of fish and probably one of the smallest portions I have had. Udon was the last thing to come out which made no sense since its just boiled noodles so our kids ate last. The service was average and the food was not bad but no good enough to warrant coming back. Plus is that they do have a small parking lot.

I was in the area and took my friends out for sushi after shopping. I stumbled across this place on yelp and thought we'd give it a try and I was slightly disappointed with the service and our overall experience. However, I'll start with the pros. The pros: 1) The portions and price were worth it. 2) The fish quality was pretty good. 3) The place was cozy and comfortable. We didn't have to wait long at all. 4) There's a designated parking lot. Cons: 1) It was pretty empty but we still had to flag down a server several times for basic things, more water or to put in our order after the apps. 2) I ordered another of the Salmon Enawga and we got the completely wrong roll... it was baked instead but I had already waited super long for it to come out (which makes sense since it was baked not seared) that we didn't feel like complaining. After cross referencing the menu, it was the same price. It was just odd since the receipt showed we ordered another of that roll even though we got the completely wrong thing. Although we enjoyed that roll, I'm not sure we'd come back with just the overall lack of care/service.

this place is a solid sushi place but nothing that stands out from other sushi places in the area  kaijin 22 sashimi: 4/5 this set came with a variety of sashimi and tamago pieces. the fish was good, although some pieces tasted a little fishier than i would have liked tempura udon 3/5 the udon was pretty average and nothing memorable. i was hoping for a few more vegetables in the soup such as onion or napa cabbage. my biggest issue was the broth, which tasted a bit too mild and lacked depth of flavor. parking: small parking lot on site

We've been here a few times now and we have enjoyed this new sushi place, we tried the discovery combination, fried crab roll, and a roll that was amazing. Fresh sushi. And service was very nice. They are not very crowded and so it is fast service. We will be back!

    Blue Fin Tuna Don

I was searching for sushi places to eat with my family for my birthday and came up upon Kaijin Sushi. We started with their calamari, Mixed tempura, and spicy tuna crispy rice. We really like the spicy tuna crispy rice. The calamari wasn't bad. It had a good flavor but a pretty small portion. We were really disappointed at the mixed tempura. The shrimp was super tiny and the portion was really small for the price. We ordered the soba noodles and that was just OK. The needles came out a little soggy. Their chu toro was OK but the Yuzu kinda overpowered the fish. The blue fin don was pretty good, but again the fish was very thin. Their sashimi combo was a pretty decent for the price. We also ordered their sushi combo with a specialty roll that I didn't get a picture of. I have to say... For the price that we paid. I wish the sushi was more fresh and the portion was a little bigger. Also, I know that we had a bigger group (8 of us) and the gratuity is already included, but I wish they had a little bit better of a service and checked in with us a little bit more.

Wanted to give this new place a try! I'll have to say the sashimi sets they have on their menu is worth it for value. Sashimi 22 piece set 4/5 - It comes with salmon, yellowtail, albacore, tuna, and white fish as well as a small pieces of tamago. The salmon was very buttery and tasty. Everything else on the sashimi was good too but it was a lil way too fishy. The amount and size of the sashimi was worth it despite that. Tempura Udon 3/5 - Just very very average udon, nothing special and I was hoping there would be more some sort of veggie in it like onion or napa cabbage, but the main thing was the broth as it was not super flavorful and very mild. The tempura was really good though, but the tempura sauce it came with was not sweet whatsoever which is how tempura sauce should be. Overall this place was not bad and I would come back here again if the sashimi was a lil more fresh and less fishy tasting. The service was very good though and the staff is very friendly.

3-Month Update: Still a top mid-grade sushi restaurant for the SGV. Uni (Sea Urchin), Ikura (Salmon Roe), Mackerel, Hokkaido Scallops, and Salmon: all so fresh, rich, and masterfully put together. Also had the Soba noodles which were all dente with not-too-salty Soba sauce. New menu design too. Please see old review for restaurant details.

Kaijin has some of the freshest sushi around. Also yummy appetizers and bowls/plates. They ownership has changed for the better I think. Give them a chance as they're an up and coming local sushi spot. The sushi Chef Tone is pretty down to earth and makes some nice specialty rolls. We talked some football as well since they had the game on behind the sushi bar. Kaijin has your classic Japanese sushi restaurant feel. Wish them the best of luck on their new sushi joint.

Their lunch special for under $20 is super good. My friend got the bento box for $18, and I got 3 hand rolls for $18! I'm as well pregnant so they were extremely accommodating in cooking everything in my hand rolls for me. Definitely will be coming back soon for more!

It's out first visit. I saw some delicious photos from other review and wanted to come here and try. We ordered the Agedashi tofu and crispy rice with spicy tuna as appetizers. The tofu is so silly and tender inside. The dashi broth is a perfect pairing to the fried tofu. The crispy rice with spicy tuna is great. The crispy rice with spicy tuna goes well, the final touch of avocado and chili oil puts a perfect kick to it. We ordered the salmon sushi and a salmon skin hand roll. Both taste fresh and refreshing. The menu has a variety of choices and prices are reasonable. We will come back to enjoy their happy hour!

Came here for a friend's birthday lunch and had a great experience. We came in on a Saturday afternoon which wasn't super busy so everything came out really fast. The spicy tune on crispy rice was really good! I also enjoyed the Kanin roll. Service was good, I absolutely would come again!

The price was reasonable and the portion size was generous. However the quality was just ok. The salad wasn't too fresh and contained mainly of yellow (not too many green) lettuce, a few thin strips of carrots, and a slice of tomato. The salad dressing was too salty and sour for my preference. The chicken was very dry and overcooked. It came with a lot of chicken but I wished the chicken was more tender. The teriyaki sauce was not bad and paired decently with the chicken, making it slightly less dry. The California Rolls were probably my most favorite since it tasted very fresh and delicious. It had plenty of imitation salad and avocado so it was very enjoyable. The miso soup was not too salty and packed with flavor. It was very refreshing and tasty. Overall, I thought the meal was average and it seems more like a quantity over quality kind of place, based off the bento box.

I'm always interested in quality sushi joints that aren't so expensive you can't take a child and stayed alert for a chance to visit. I went with my mom for a quick Monday lunch before she dropped me off for vision correction surgery (which makes Akinori one of the last places I wore glasses). We only had about forty-five minutes, and this was just enough time for a light meal at the sushi bar. The restaurant was small and casual, and we opted to sit at the counter. There were a few other customers, and service was friendly and timely, but not fast. The chefs were skillful and deliberate, and they made delicious sushi. We started with snow crab sunomono, a nice light appetizer of vinegary cucumber and seaweed with a few meaty hunks of sweet crab. Then we got some nigiri: red snapper, black snapper, and tuna sets, which came with akami, toro takuan, ootoro, maguro zuke, and seared ootoro. Every piece was fantastic, the fish fresh, the nigiri delicatelly formed. Finally, I couldn't resist the maximalist Akinori roll, with spicy shrimp and langostino rolled with rice in soy paper, possibly tempura fried, then topped with spicy tuna, eel sauce, spicy mayo, chives, and tobiko. I love an over-the-top spicy-tuna-centric roll, and this one was deeply satisfying. Akinori also does ramen and teriyaki and offers a bunch of reasonable lunch specials. You can eat here pretty cheap, or spend as much as you desire on good quality nigiri. I live almost 20 miles from Pasadena, but I hope to visit this place again.

I've been wanting to try Tendon Tempura Carlos Jr. for a while since their original location is in Torrance. I'm really glad they opened a Pasadena location because we're lucky to have one here in the 626 now. Parking was easy since there are spots right in front of the restaurant, but they are metered and cost $2 per hour. As soon as we walked in, we were greeted by the staff. Since the weather was nice, we decided to sit out on the patio, which was cool and comfortable. To start, we ordered the fried tempura mozzarella sticks ($5.99), onion kakiage ($2.99), and edamame corn kakiage ($5.99). Everything was delicious, but the mozzarella sticks were the clear favorite. They were fried perfectly with an amazing cheese pull and plenty of cheesy flavor. We decided to share all of our entrees family style. For my son, we ordered the plain hot udon, which was simple and perfect for him. For the rest of us, we ordered the Premium Tempura Bowl ($32.97) and added ikura ($4.98), the cold soba with dipping sauce and tempura ($19.99), and Carlos's Jewel Box ($31.99), which came with chopped salmon, toro, yellowtail, and popcorn shrimp over rice. We also added extra toro for $8. On top of that, we ordered a side of five slices of chu-toro for $15.49, which honestly felt like a great deal. The Premium Tempura Bowl was definitely the star of the meal. Every piece of tempura was light, crispy, and fried perfectly without feeling greasy. The fried tempura egg was absolutely chef's kiss, especially once the yolk mixed into the rice. The tempura dipping sauce was also excellent and brought everything together. The Carlos's Jewel Box was another standout. The fish tasted fresh, and the rice with their house sauce paired perfectly with everything. The added toro made it even better. The cold soba was well prepared, but it just wasn't our cup of tea. That's more of a personal preference than anything because the quality was still there. The restaurant has a modern look while still feeling like a cozy mom-and-pop shop. I really liked the decor and the welcoming atmosphere. Since we were the only table sitting outside, I can't really comment on the noise level inside, but the patio was peaceful and relaxing. The service was great. The staff brought out a booster seat for my son and even helped secure it to the patio chair. They also brought us all the condiments, including ginger and pickled vegetables, without us having to ask, which I appreciated. Overall, I would definitely come back. The tempura was some of the best I've had in the 626, and the rice bowls were just as impressive. If you're visiting for the first time, I highly recommend ordering one of the tempura bowls. You really can't go wrong. It's great to see a restaurant that started in Torrance expand to Pasadena because it's a welcome addition to the 626 dining scene.

There was also no crunch to it. I remember the Torrance location tempura had a very nice crunch, batter was light and airy, and it stuck to the food. The sauce is the same, as they put it in the rice instead of you dipping it into a sauce. I also got cold soba on the side since they can't substitute the rice for soba. Soba wasn't anything special. The noodles at the Torrance location is better I promise! The miso soup was okay, didn't really enjoy it that much. It's not your typical miso soup. It has mushrooms in it. The mushroom flavor was too strong for me. Service was meh since we sat down first, but they took the order from our neighbors before us. Their food came out first too. Most likely won't come back to this location again. Not sure if they just had an off day when I went, but I had a disappointing experience.

He & his friends pretty much make the big decisions for the mall and are somewhat more involved w/ a handful of places like Tokyo Soul. It was such a privilege to be on the receiving end of their warmth, generosity, and openness. My friend & I ended up getting to try some of the items they're planning to introduce the following week (which I won't post pics of, just to keep it a surprise :P) as we continued getting to learn s'more about our new friends, interspersed by the continuation of my & my friend's own convos. We felt lucky that we got to be served by Edward too (a mentee of Stan's), who usually doesn't work that shift, but his friendliness was definitely one of the first things I noted as I got seated. The hospitality that night outshined the food only because it was like nothing I've experienced in LA. However, the food can hold its own, and though my conversations w/ my friend + Stan & co. meant I was eating my pork katsu curry rice way past its prime state, the dish was still so flavorful that it was a delight to eat even cold. What a Monday night to remember. Thank you Stan & co. for taking care of us so well!

I always pass by the spot but with a toddler, the hours of operation never really worked for us…read morewhere I can sit down to eat a meal inside or it's closed when we are here in the mall. Only option was finally to get takeout today. A little pricey for what it is. Not much rice or curry. Didn't really fill me up after paying almost $50 for sharing beef curry rice medium spice and hayashi rice. It came with miso soup on the side and bc of the cyclospora outbreak, they weren't serving salad so refunded me $4. The beef in the curry rice was too beefy and chewy. The medium spice didn't really have a kick to it. The meat in the hayashi rice tastes like hot pot meats and the flavoring in that didn't have enough OOOMPHH if you know what I mean. Since it's located in the mall, there's plenty of parking available. This restaurant is on the 2nd floor right next to Nordstrom.
