You sit under umbrellas or pavilions and enjoy the view onto the lake. The atmosphere is relaxed. Children play and nobody minds. The service is nice and quick. Of course, there is a different (and shorter) menu to choose from then in the restaurant. The emphasis lies on anything grilled. We have had the spare ribs (great), yesterday we tried the cheeseburger and did not regret it: in comparison with burgers from those well known fast food chains this here is definitely the better choice. The meat was well done but nevertheless juicy, tomato and lettuce were fresh and crisp.The size of the burger and the portion of French Fries and the salad were more than decent and above average. As dessert we had (homemade!) ice cream, very recommendable. In addition to the standard menus the restaurant recurrently offers special theme days or weeks. Recently there was Thai on the menu that we missed unfortunately. But supposedly the Thai theme will return sometime in the future. We will definitely come this time. Of course the barbecue area is something for summer exclusively. But by chance we learnt that the place will be remodeled to stay open all year long. Alright, as for the review: I think the place is solid, as long as you know what you're getting into. This is the place in Dortmund for a Schnitzel, some beer, and probably a football match. Better, in my opinion, than Zum Alten Markt across the Platz. At Wenkers they brew their own beer: a Schwarzbier, which I find pretty good, and then their Urtrüb, which I find kinda bland but which my German coworker insists is "süffig" (smooth? quaffable?). Also Kronen Pils is available because come on, you're in Dortmund, there's no escaping the Pilsners. Also Schöfferhofer Weizen but that's honestly one of the worst hefeweizens in my opinion. Hold out for a Paulaner, Weihenstephaner, or Maisel-Weisse if you're in Germany only briefly. Uh, as for Schnitzel, I'm a Pfefferrahm kind of guy. Get a Schnitzel and some beers and consume until you're nice and belly-full.

Maximilian has a huge beer garden out front, but the tables were all full when we visited. The service inside was friendly and provided an English menu. The sweet potato fries were delicious and come with your choice of dipping sauce, the pizza was good as well. And as always the beer was the best part. And if you are looking to buy some Dortmund gear nearby, there is a team shop right next door.
