In Speyer we wanted to see the historic church the tour guide had said was where Martin Luther…read morenailed his 95 theses to the door. This led us to the Memorial Church of the Protestation; alas we were misinformed - the theses were nailed to the door of All Saints Church in Wittenberg. Nevertheless we made it here just as the church was closing, and the gentleman closing up graciously allowed us a few minutes in the Memorial Hall. Here is a bronze statue of Luther and six other protesters from the 1529 Diet of Speyer, which the church memorializes. No door theses, but still a beautiful church and worthwhile to see.

The stained glass was beautiful, incredibly detailed in its painting on glass, and the light it filled the sanctuary with was inspiring. Images included stories of Jesus' life and ministry and stories from the Bible, old and new testaments, as well as reformers Luther, Calvin, Zwingli, and Melanchthon (the last I don't know). I liked also the metalwork of the baptismal font with its fish & ship, and the podium with its fishers of men visualization.

Vor dem Eingang prangt ein großes Schild "Offene Kirche", so als wolle man sich über die streng geregelten Öffnungszeiten zB des Speyerer Doms lustig machen. Eine Kirche hat immer offen zu sein. Im Innern überwältigen die großen Wand- und Seitengemälde in der Holzvertäfelung, die den kompletten Innenraum bedecken: Es ist, als wäre die Kirche ein einziges, begehbares Gemälde. Lohnt auf jeden Fall einen Besuch, denn auch der Rest des einzelnen großen Kirchenschiffs ist für eine evangelische Kirche geradezu "protzig".
