Place was clean and cheerful, employees were very nice, and the music/noise levels weren't too loud to carry on a pleasant conversation at the table. I ordered the miso paitan, spouse tried classic tonkotsu, and we split a karaage chicken. All three were great, but we agreed that my ramen was better than his and that we would definitely get the karaage chicken again next time -- it was a nice crispy-chewy counterpart to the softness of everything in our ramen bowl. :) Staff graciously gave me a tub in which to take home my leftovers, since the portions are MASSIVE and my appetite is not. Even my spouse couldn't quite finish his (and I have enough of my ramen left over to make a complete dinner for me or a lunch for him). Next time we'll probably get a miso paitan again (because it really hit the spot) and try out the shoyu ramen, just to compare it to the tonkotsu. We'll probably also try out the gyoza -- the table next to ours had ordered some, and we were a little envious (but too full to order anything else at that point). read more

I will be trying more items from the menu but the tonkostu ramen and bbq pork buns are out of this world. I'm really starting to review more often on here because I feel that hidden places such as Kaizen go unnoticed and it only takes one bad review to lower the stars. I really only ever review unless I feel a place is terrible or if it is underappreciated. Kaizen is the latter! I have tried Urban Ramen and I just can't do it. Not knowing there's Kaizen. Such good and fresh ramen! Went here on a busy Saturday evening but got amazing service. Our food for three took about 10 minutes, which was super fair. It was hot and so flavorful. The dining area was clean and the service was great. You're able to get chicken instead of beef for any dish with no added charge, which I thought was super cool. Everything was WONDERFUL! Gluten free noodles are bomb. Spicy noodles are a MUST if you can eat gluten and like parties in your mouth. The broths (we had one pork based and other other spicy chicken) are PHENOMENAL. The staff are extremely nice and over all- this is a place where I would go out of my way to support. read more

This place is amazing! I am quite picky with my ramens. However, their tonkotsu ramen was one of the best ramen I've ever had. The broth was extremely flavorful, and their noodles were perfectly made. Also, the interior of the restaurant is very cool! They have some of the coolest artwork I've ever seen in a restaurant. I just really enjoyed the hip and modern design of the restaurant. Their customer service is extremely great as well! I highly recommend anyone who loves ramen to come here. read more

I've tried this place twice now, once for the poke bowl which was pretty good its just sushi unrolled, and again last night I went for the miso ramen. Walking in the atmosphere wasn't welcoming there is no music or hostess even though there's a stand that says "wait to be seated" .... I ordered two bowls of ramen at $13 each which wouldn't be a bad price if the bowls were bigger, the miso broth wasn't savory like I hoped and my egg was cold (not sure if that's on purpose) the noodles were too thick for me and I found a hair embedded in one. I think next time I'll just make ramen and broth at home :) also the tables aren't bolted into the floor so it's super easy to knock stuff over. Needs improvement. I guess give them a try if you like trying new things read more

So glad to have this in royal oak now! Good music, great food, awesome staff. Tried the miso paitan and classic tonkatsu. Both had excellent rich broth and delicious pork belly. There were a nice amount of condiments to choose from, but not at every table so I imagine you might not be able to get the ones you want when it's very busy. We also had a side of karaage, which was nice and juicy. I would've preferred it the normal way with mayo than the sweet sauce it came with, but still tasty. As far as local trendy ramen places go, I actually preferred this to edo or ima. It's a nice traditional bowl done well. read more

Kaizen ramen is definitely an exciting addition to downtown royal oak! They have vegan and gluten-free options which allows anyone with these dietary restrictions to enjoy a hearty bowl of ramen! I've had a taste of the pork bun, tonkatsu ramen, vegan ramen, as well as the karage and all were fairly delicious. the tonkatsu ramen was pretty authentic and definitely the best dish we had out of all the things we've tried so definitely order this if you're here!! The vegan ramen was a bit of a disappointment though. I found it to be a bit flavorless and believe there could be room for improvement. (If you're looking for a vegan ramen alternative, I would recommended urban ramen in Detroit rather than kaizen). Although everything was good, the food could have been hotter (temperature). Our bowls of broth were not steaming and even the chicken was just warm even though it was fried. The temperature disappointment has led me to knock off a star :/ but otherwise it's a great place to give a try! read more

This has been our go-to spot for those steamy noodles on a rainy day lately. The tonkatsu broth is creamy, light, with just the right amount of saltiness. I also often find myself ordering another round of pork belly buns because they're super delicious. Definitely on par with Urban Ramen, and subtly reminiscent of Momofuku. read more

It was okay...not the best, not the worst. For the money though, I can't recommend it. The cashier was pleasant, and the food came out rather quickly, almost too quickly. The broth didn't taste developed. It reminded me of grocery store broth. The noodles seemed over saturated, maybe overcooked or add much to the broth. I believe they were dried/cooked verses fresh. Average. The ingredients in my classic-looking tonkotsu ramen looked promising at first, a nice looking roasted pork belly and a bright red soft boiled egg; the noodles however were completely soaked in broth, like if they had been sitting there for a while. The whole bowl was basically filled up with fully saturated soggy noodles. The little broth that was left was in itself quite shallow in flavor, and it had turned completely gooey from the gluten oozed by the noodles. I also had some gyozas which I am sure were straight out of the freezer, since one of them was still freezing cold. Overall, the ramen here has a lot of catching up to do with the stellar Urban Ramen in midtown Detroit. It's possible that I came in on a bad night, and surely there is a lot of room for improvement. It's also probably unfair to compare a restaurant in the suburbs with the excellent emerging dining scene in downtown/midtown Detroit. read more

Me and my friends went here to celebrate my return from college for a nice Saturday dinner. A few observation: 1) we all got the Tonketsu pork ramen which was really good, I just wish the there was more servings xD, but it was really good and if you add the chili extract it's delicious. Also got the edamame which was good but nothing , also got the gyoza which was pretty good 2) for us it was as pretty expensive so it's definitely a little more upscale, but worth the price, we will probably only eat here on special occasions 3) the murals are fantastic and really add to the atmosphere 4) overall good experience and I can't wait to go to japan for my study abroad trip and have more delicious ramen like This shop read more

This model of ordering at the counter doesn't lend itself to a deeply positive staff experience, only because you just order & sit down, but the cashier was kind. I ordered ramen and the chicken karaage and both were pretty good! The sauce on the chicken was a bit gloppy but the chicken was tender and juicy. I was really excited to try this place. I love ramen! I think my mistake was getting carry out, I'll give it another shot dining in at some point. The pork broth is delicious and thick. The pork is some of the thinnest sliced meat I've ever seen and for $2 I would think it'd be a little bit more or two of those thin slices. The to-go container of broth was just over half full, either get smaller containers or fill it all the way up. I'm disappointed too because the ramen I ordered is supposed to come with chasu (pork belly), Soft-boiled marinated egg, chili oil, onion oil, scallions, sesame, crunchy onion, bean sprout, kikurage, spicy miso, nori. I asked for no kikurage but I also didn't get any scallion, sesame, nori, or crunchy onion. I even asked for double/extra scallion but as you can see from the picture I didn't receive any. It had corn (which I paid for), egg, bean sprout, and half a soft-boiled egg. The nori, scallion, sesame, crunchy onion make the ramen and I didn't get any! I'm gonna give it another shot in person because the flavors are good, but I'm paying for ramen that comes with things in it, I sure hope I get the things I've paid for. The food here was great! The pork bun was particularly good. Everything had great flavor. What keeps it from getting 5 stars is the wait time. It's an order at the cash register and they bring your food out to you sort of place, which led us to believe it would be relatively quick. It took us 40 minutes to get our appetizer and 45 to get our dinner. Was the wait worth it? My husband says yes if he wasn't super hungry. I say no. You'll have to decide for yourself. read more

It's actually ramen! My rating is based on my first ever experience here which was shortly after they officially opened. I feel they may still be getting into the swing of things because while the food has kept me coming back I feel like past couple times the quality was a little off with the noodles and a couple of the side dishes. I'm guessing this is due to demand issues. (This place is busy!) That said, I feel that if this place sticks to the quality of Ramen that was being served when first opening it will for sure become the go to spot for Ramen. The atmosphere is great.
