One of the best omakase spots !!!Top-notch omakase, amazing quality and great service. Highly recommend!

By FAR my favorite Japanese restuarant in Flushing. I know a new omakase place opened up in Flushing, but this place has the good stuff, you know, like uni, fatty tuna, ikura, umph Tastes so fresh too. They say on the menu that they fly their stuff and... I really do believe it. The waitress is also super nice and personable, I enjoy her presence :) I've only come late at night (like 8pm and on) and I like the vibes, it's often a bunch of people just enjoying their fish and their drinks and their friends. I do remember one time, though, someone brought their kid and I wondered if he was enjoying the food because... idk I just feel most kids don't like seafood like that.

I've heard great things about Kakurega, but it was my first time trying last week. It definitely lived up to the stellar reviews! The staff was friendly and attentive, and they were very accommodating of my shellfish allergy. The food was also very tasty. Aside from the nigiris, I especially loved the chawanmushi and the matcha dessert. I would definitely go back for the ambiance, service, and the food.

BEST sushi in town! Ordered sushi deluxe for take out tonight. It was very nicely packaged and the fish was by far the most fresh I've ever had. Everything was perfect. I definitely recommend this place and will for sure return for more.

If you are wondering if you should come, YOU SHOULD. This place is amazing, each piece has a full bite of fish, way more than the rice and the quality is great. The staff is also amazing, gave my girlfriend and I free beer for her birthday. Trust me. COME HERE.

Chinese-owned Japanese cuisine. Went there on a weekday and there wasn't a lot of people - the customers there were typically regulars. The host/waitress was very friendly explaining the menu and dishes whilst also chatting with the regular customers, providing a very friendly vibe. Menu choices include a la carte, tokusen omakase ($168), jyo-sen omakase ($138), and early bird omakase ($58). Note that early bird omakase is every day from 4:30pm-6:30pm. We chose the tokusen omakase option which included five appetizers, nine pieces of sushi, hand roll, soup, and dessert. The five appetizers were surprisingly good, the most impressive ones as follows: Tempura fish and shiso - well balanced crispiness of the fish and shiso with seaweed and sea salt. The crispiness was just perfect, not overly crispy nor oily. Kumamoto Oyster, Japanese Hairy Crab Uni Caviar, Bergamot - this is a three in one appetizer, three mini dishes within one appetizer course. Absolutely adored the Japanese hairy crab. The sweetness of the crab complemented with uni and caviar, this is a selection of the upmost ingredients. Kumamoto oyster topped with salmon roe, soy sauce, and scallion seasoning was also quite tasty. This was my first time eating bergamot so it was an interesting experience figuring out how to twist and eat it. Grilled Swordfish - the swordfish meat was grilled to perfection. It's meat was extremely tender and topped with truffle salt which added flavor yet wasn't overly empowering. Unfortunately the sushi experience wasn't as pleasant as the appetizers. Sushi itself was just ok. Edible but nothing particularly special that "wowed" us. Sushi rice could use some improvement. The sushi rice in our first couple of pieces were on the stiffer side. After a couple pieces (perhaps the rice came to room temperature?) the sushi rice was a bit better. This was a nice omakase exploratory experience. I wonder if I can go back next time for just the appetizers in the future?

Yummy food, good service ! Very fresh fish We ordered omakase which is very good! Their price is reasonable as well.

My husband and I were looking for Omakase restaurant for our wedding anniversary and found this place on Yelp. We made a reservation online but the restaurant wasn't too busy since it was a week day. You can sit on the counter near the chefs (and see how they are preparing the dish) or sit on the table. For Omakase, they had two different options. We picked the most expensive one to try a variety of fish! And we LOVED it. Everything was delicious and very fresh! Throughout the course, we enjoyed every single piece and staffs were attentive making sure to explain each fish and we are satisfied with everything. We are going to come back soon!! **Street parking (might be difficult to find a spot) **Reservation available **Small space inside **Different types of Sake available **Other dishes are available (not only Omakase)

Stumbled on this by accident, and decided to give it a chance. Quiet and homey, yet elegant atmosphere. Service is good. Omakase is a good value compared to other places, especially for imported seafood. I got the chawanmushi (steamed egg) and the Chirashi. Great chawanmushi, it's soft delicate and savory. They added truffle to it as an extra bonus, it came topped with a little scallop. I recommend getting it if you're a fan of homemade flavors tasting high end. Also very, very good chirashi don. Fish was fresh and tasty. Presentation was on point, it resembled a jewelry bowl. I found high quality pieces of tuna and white fish. Rice is well balanced/seasoned.

The sushi and preparations were not bad. Everything tasted fresh (but also not particular wow-ing). What Kakurega really lacks is the fun experience that I am looking for with omakase - especially at this price point. At $135 I expect some interaction and banter from the chef or at least some clear descriptions of what I've been handed! Instead there is a physical separation from the chef, detracting from the omakase experience. Because of this clear wall, it was very difficult to hear the chef and I couldn't even catch many of the names of what I was eating. Unless you must have some omakase in Flushing, I'd recommend saving some money and enjoying one of the many $50-100 range omakase in Manhattan.

After seeing Kakurega listed in Eater NY's top Omakase spots under $125 in NYC and knowing Danny's pedigree from his College Point restaurant (Currently Danny's French Cuisine formerly Danny's Steakhouse & Oyster Bar) I figured it was worth giving this place a try. It is located in a stylish, intimate basement space in downtown Flushing. Currently they offer three tiers of Omakase. We opted for the mid-tier: $138 for 17 courses, including five appetizers, nine pieces of sushi, a handroll, miso soup, and a dessert. The breakdown isn't listed on the menu, but perhaps that's the point. Omakase is to trust that the Sushi chef is giving you a quality experience for the money - you are in his hands. We were the only diners in the place with our 6:15 reservation on a recent Thursday - we had the place to ourselves our entire time. I believe this has more to do with unfounded Coronavirus fears, which is unfortunately disproportionately affecting Asian restaurants. I like that their omakase is fairly straight forward and not focusing too much on over the top combinations. The fish and rice in the nigiri was complimented slightly by small additions keeping the focus where it belonged. Highlights were the chutoro and surprisingly the akami tuna. The Wagyu was a real treat as well - charred with a blowtorch to perfection. I really enjoyed the otoro handroll where the nori had such an excellent crunch to it - great texture. For me I would have preferred the apps to come after the nigiri since their flavors for many were more pronounced - fried fish, mayo laced oyster, baby abalone, rich monkfish liver would be more appreciated towards the end. I would have liked to seen Hokkaido sea urchin served instead of the Santa Barbara one we were given. The Ikura in our jewel box was marinated in mirin and yuzu disappointingly masking the saline sea flavor, but still interesting. We were given a complimentary carafe of sake after we picked up and commented on the flavor of the ikura - a thoughtful and generous gesture. I would do the $98 tier next time since it offers 14 courses, including four appetizers, eight pieces of sushi, miso soup, and a dessert - I would supplement with additions. This wasn't the best omakase experience I ever had in terms of fish quality and rice preparation, but it has a good value and the service and friendliness of the staff elevates the experience.

Came here for a large gathering, so we got the whole bar space. Decided not to do omakase, and just did a bunch of ala carte items. - The chawanmushi was rich and decadent and super umami. - Tako wasabi was good, chunky pieces - Squid tempura - This one was alright, chunky pieces. - Chirashi - Small portion, but fresh sashimi - live scallop - this was very fresh, and the lime zest was perfect on top - Uni (Maine and California) - both were very fresh - Some box containing (negitoro, uni, and ikura with a quail egg) - Would prefer to eat them separately, as mixing them together didn't work for me. - Foie Gras - this one was alright, the flavor just wasn't there for me. - Chutoro - was fresh - Ikura - this one was disappointing. It was bitterly sweet. I do not like how they marinated the ikura. - tuna avocado roll - fresh tuna - sashimi platter - lots of fresh fish, but it wasn't mind blowing - fresh unagi - meh - tuna tartare with caviar - this one was pretty good. - grilled fish - some parts were too overcooked, but the flavor was tasty - Matcha dessert with red bean - I actually enjoyed this a lot. It was mildly flavored but hit the spot. Small establishment; friendly staff; somewhat slow service, and they forgot a few items here and there, but overall it was a nice experience.

I ordered toro tartar, very nice appetizer, plus the fresh scallops was sweet. You can taste the ocean from this fresh scallops. Absolutely amazing. The service was also very nice, she explained the ways to eat this toro tartar with seaweed. Thanks I order some sushi, you might think the portion is too small, but let me tell you, it worth it with the top quality. Will come back next time to check this place for sure.

We are very familiar with the area and must have walked passed this neatly tucked away gem without ever noticing it. Our son had mentioned that he and his friends have been going to a sushi place near Asian Jewel, our former dim sum go to place. When we sat down to order, my wife and I were quite impressed by how clean and cozy the restaurant was. Kind of on the small side with a few tables on the ground floor level. The menu offered cooked food as well as fresh sushi. We decided to start with the sushi & sashimi combo. They also offered a sushi or sashimi a la carte menu where you can choose to order by the piece. I believe that if you choose one of their standard menu sushi or sashimi orders and pay with cash, the a la carte price per piece of sushi / sashimi is only $1.35 / piece! Well we were famished and in addition to the sushi & sashimi plate we ordered two rounds of sushi & sashimi a la carte. Their salmon and yellow tail was so fresh and so scrumptious as was the sweet shrimp. The tuna was also very yummy and did not disappoint! When all was said and done we were quite happy with our experience with Yoi Sushi Japanese. I highly recommend Yoi if you're anywhere near Tangram Mall or Asian Jewel and have a hankering for yummy sushi. They also offer cooked food as well as ramen bowls.

The shrimp tempura roll has the perfect amount of breading and the salmon tastes fresh! The interior is clean and I love the decor. I believe they have an upstairs seating area too. The restaurant was understaffed. On Mother's Day there were 2 waitresses for an entire floor that was half full. The dirty dishes and garbage accumalated at my table to a point that I never experienced before at a restaraunt. Presumably the kitchen was understaffed too because.... Some of the items, such as the relatively expensive mussels, that I ordered took 1.5 hours to come out. The expensive squid skewers were conveniently out of stock. I saw my table neighbor wait 30 mins for food. He looked unhappy. I saw a delivery guy waiting in the lobby for over 20 mins. He looked angry. Although we ordered non-stop, there was a good 15-20mins between orders where we had no food on the table. This is unacceptable at an AYCE that forces you to order instead of having a buffet. The sashimi and sushi also fell in quality and is sub-par compared to local AYCE peers such as Sushi Village in Bayside, The Buffet at College Point, or Akino, a block away, which I highly recommend. To add insult to injury, for my table of 2 -the bill came with a thinly veiled mandatory gratuity in the form of a service fee of 18%. Does the restaurant know the service is sub-par and so it puts a required tip without disclosing this beforehand? Goodbye River, forever.
