I have come here to hang out with spouse, friends, and co-workers. Each time I come has never been a disappointment. Its a wonderful place to hang out, talk, eat, and drink. It is a little pricey but worth it to have a good time, I would estimate $20-$30 a plate. Drinks price varies. Best time for good deals is during their happy hour, of course lol. **This is from several months ago.. it was sitting in my draft for a bit... Kalaveras is a chain and there are many locations throughout OC and LA. I've been to the one in Anaheim and Fullerton, and here, Long Beach. One of the nice things about going to a chain, somewhat, is you know what you are getting, no surprises. I like their HH menu and I like their tacos. Pretty decent and pretty consistent. They also offer grilled salmon tacos and it's not something that is common at places that offer fish tacos. I like their ceviche here also, though this one particular time, I came with my coworkers for lunch and we only got tacos.. One minor thing I wish they offer is Taco Tuesdays, some sort of tacos deals. but NBD. Service was good and being inside any Kalaveras, you are kind of transported into another world, and, as stressful as Long Beach for me since I equate it with work, not fun, having lunch in Kalaveras helped me de-stressed for a bit. I've heard about this place which there's a location in the valley. I was in downtown Long Beach and noticed that they had a location here. And as happy hour was happening, it was a nice way to try it out. There was a sign outside mentioned HH specials with dishes at 7.99, not bad. It's a decent size restaurant located at The Pike in the heart of downtown Long Beach right across the street from The Convention Center. They have a small patio area along the front that also looks into the main bar area inside. We checked in with the host which we just wanted drinks and a snack. Bar area was self seat but if we wanted one of the hi-top table in the bar area, we would have to be seated by the hostess. Anyway, bar seating it was. Both the regular menus and HH menu were handed to us. There was one bartender working when we arrive. She was sweet but on the forgetful side. I'm sure she was busy with drink orders so that's a good reason. Later on someone did come and helped out as well. Drinks, the margarita and one of the frozen slush drink. Both at 10.00 for happy hour. Margarita was quite tasty and the frozen drink as well. They both had a kick to it so you taste the alcohol. Food, we shared the loaded carne asada fries. It was quite tasty with everything added to it. Meats were chopped up pieces and all tossed together with fries, chipotle sauce and pico de gallo. Not bad for 7.99. There was a few other plate options that sounded quite nice for HH. We just wanted that one drink but did have to ask a few time for another glass of water. Overall, it's nothing major. I'm sure people love it but it was just ok. Their HH slush drink was decent for the price which I give them that. The salsa had the perfect mild kick, exactly how I like it, and the chips came out hot, fresh, and salted. Nothing makes me saltier than unsalted chips. I've been here plenty of times and have yet to order something I didn't enjoy. Consistency like that deserves recognition! Of the three dishes I tried today: F*ck: enchiladas de camaron - definitely brings the bold and saucy personality. The shrimp were cooked well, lot of depth in flavor, and it's the kind of dish you crave again a few days later. Maybe not my forever pick, but absolutely one I want to keep in rotation. Marry: the barbacoa burrito - this was love at first bite. Packed with flavor, perfectly balanced, and hearty without feeling overly heavy. Every bite was just as good as the first, and if commitment issues weren't a thing, I'd order this every single time without even looking at the menu. Kill: the dragon roll - not bad by any means, it just had tough competition. It didn't stand out the way the other dishes did, and when everything else on the table is demanding your attention, something has to take the fall. My co-resis and I stumbled upon this place after our movie and fortunately for us, it was happy hour! The deals were AMAZING so we knew we had to sample as much of it as we could and luckily there were four of us. We were seated immediately but it was definitely really loud and lively inside. Kalaveras, you amuse me. First of all, the flower wall that greets you upon entering is gorgeous. The one within the women's bathroom is puzzling but a great photo backdrop for selfies. The food itself is good. Then again, I had cheese enchiladas with beans so take that with what you will. Lol. They do not serve table chips and salsa. The drinks and alcoholic slushies on the happy hour menu are very sweet, basically straight sugar, and they're pre-made so you can't customize them at all. I was really disappointed with my experience at Kalaveras in Long Beach. I had been wanting to try this place for a long time and was genuinely excited to finally go. I made a reservation and went with a friend, but after being seated, we waited over 15 minutes without anyone greeting us, introducing themselves, checking on us, or even acknowledging our table. Eventually, my friend had to stop someone walking by to ask if anyone would be helping us. The employee apologized and helped us even though she said she wasn't actually assigned to our table. We ordered the Mimosa Tóxica drinks and chose different flavors based on the menu options, but were later told the flavors are apparently mixed together anyway and that they "always have to explain that to people," which honestly made the menu confusing and misleading. Another thing that stood out was that every single table around us already had chips and salsa except ours. After noticing this, I finally asked one of the servers if the chips and salsa were complimentary, and he said yes, but that customers are "supposed to ask" for them. That explanation didn't really make sense considering the restaurant was completely full and every other table already had them. After that, multiple different employees/managers came by apologizing, and it became confusing trying to figure out who was actually serving our table because no one wore name tags and we never seemed to have one designated server. Meanwhile, the booths around us appeared to have attentive service. We basically had to flag people down anytime we needed something. They did comp our Taquitos Dorados appetizer for the inconvenience, which I appreciated, but unfortunately the overall experience still wasn't good. The food itself was mid. I had the Quesa Birria Tacos, we shared the Taquitos Dorados appetizer, and my friend had the Carne Asada plate. The drinks were decent, but overall the experience felt disorganized and frustrating. I've heard good things about Kalaveras, so I'd still be open to trying another location someday, but I personally would not return to the Long Beach location. read more

I specifically chose to try this place because IG kept showing me their new lunch specials. Turns out, this location doesn't offer them. Even though they're listed on the website for this location, our waitress said that the online menu is outdated. This felt like a weird response, but okay. That said, the chips and salsa were ridiculously addicting. I ordered a combination plate with one hard taco (your choice of chicken or potatoes), and a chili relleno. Overall, the food was pretty good. The chili relleno was surprisingly small. It was the smallest I've ever seen it, like the size of a large jalapeno. It was so sad. But I did get an extra hard taco, so I'm not sure if it was to make up for that or if it was added mistakenly. Other items I tried was the birria, which had good flavor, and the asada nachos. The nachos must be eaten ASAP because once it gets cold, it's kinda gross and soggy. So eat fast. Overall, food was pretty good, but about an hour later, I was dying of thirst. Would I go back? We walked inside and there was this beautiful red floral wall so you can take pictures in front of for your social media page(s) and to hashtag #Kalaveras #LongBeach. We were greeted by a friendly gentleman who sat us at a freshly cleaned table. He gave us menus, cups of water and complimentary chips and salsa. Our nice and informative waitress came over and greeted us. Took our drink orders and let us know that since it's Tuesday there's a taco bar in addition to ordering food from the menu. Two of us decided to try the taco bar while the other friend ordered enchiladas. At the taco bar...you give the attendant your slip of how many tacos you've ordered with the waitress. There's chicken, beef, pork and potato options as the main meal in your taco. Then you scoot down to the toppings which included peppers, freshly sliced vegetables and four different sauces with mild to hot flavoring. I've recently learned there was a Kalaveras in Long Beach so I decided to have my Bday dinner here. I've only been to one in San Diego and I loved it. Music was loud, it's huge, and it was packed! They even had live music which was great! I figured, hey let's give this location a chance! Flan 10/10 - perfect sweetness, hint of cinnamon and creamy consistency. Probably best I've ever had! Hubs doesn't like flan and he said the same). Strawberries were deliciously sweet. Asada quesadilla 7/10 (not bad; just nothing special) Chips, salsa & guac were average, nothing that stood out. Although not super busy in the dining room at 640 on Wednesday, the bar was busy for the tail end of happy hour. Our cute server seemed frazzled. We placed orders immediately for two half liter cocktails. And water please. And waited. And waited and waited. Chips and salsa arrived and we asked for water. And waited. Then we tasted and raved about the food. The wings are great they were just buffalo medium, but zingy. The wings were not super crispy but dry like I prefer before being sauced. Little or no breading, a count of 8. Not tiny wings but not huge either. Two or three bites. Good! The chicken tinga taquitos were fantastic, a drizzle of crema over red corn tortillas wrapped around white meat chicken. Crispy outside, inside very tender with a nice little salad in the middle. Did not try the green sauce that came along with it, just not my fav. The happy hour portion of the quesa birria tacos is four tiny tacos with a tiny consomme and a little bit of shredded cabbage. Beware the thinly sliced long pieces of jalapeno hiding in the salad! I really enjoyed the tacos, cheesy and nice tender shredded beef. The consommé was not overly salty. It was good messy fun and I got completely filled up! I ordered a side of Spanish rice and it was bland. So I doused it in the yummy salsa and took half home with three half taquitos. Because we got full! Service was hard to flag down and don't check on us. But the food was great and you really only need one of this giant cocktails! The lomo saltado was probably one of my favorites I've tried, as they use sweet potato fries here! Loved it alongside the mint mojito. Upbeat and vibrant restaurant. Our company came with a reservation for a group of about 20-25 (which is understandably large to accommodate). My only complaint was that service was still very slow-- the fact that it took so long for our orders to even be taken didn't help the fact that their kitchen probably was backed up, so our drinks and entrees came out delayed. What really stood out was how professional she stayed even while another table was being rude and harassing her. Despite that, she never let it affect the service she gave the rest of us.
