This beach opens into a small lagoon that you can snorkel in before you get to the open ocean. There is a great beach Shack that offers lessons for SUP if needed . The small beach with white sands is also a nice quiet place to relax at night to listen to the waves if you are staying at the King K hotel. We had a small impromptu night picknic with food purchased and drinks from the hotel listening to the Ironman World Championships banquet luau music at night . It was beautiful , relaxing and soulful. Highly recommend. read more

If you like simple beaches, Kamakahonu Beach is for you. I mean, I thought it was great. The waters for the most part are calm and clear. It's a good starter beach for beginner snorkelers and lil' youngsters to wade in the water. The beach is located walking distance from an ABC store and close to hotels and cafes such as the Kona Wave Cafe and Big Kahuna Beach Grill. There's a small parking lot behind the restrooms and there's a booth were you can rent kayaks, paddle boards and umbrellas. My Friends and I spend our last day here sitting on the dock of the bay (forseriously we were, Kailua bay & pier) admiring the clear blue waters and soaking up the sun. We saw a lot of fishes'es swimming around. Plenty of convict tang, lined butterflyfish, orangespine unicornfish and moorish idol (the one from Finding Nemo) swimming close to the shore and rocks. There were a handful of yellow tang that mainly stayed towards the middle of the beach but you could see their bright yellow bodies. We were flabbergasted at the amount of fisheses. My friends and I snorkeled at Captain Cook monument and didn't see that many variety of fish compared to here. We even saw a nunu fish aka trumpetfish creepin in and out of the rocks and the fish of hawai'i, the Humuhumunukunukuapuaa or the reef triggerfish if you don't want to say the whole name. I walked over to Kona Wave Cafe to grab an acai bowl to eat here and relax. It did get busy at times with people renting kayaks and paddle boards splashing the water around and kids screaming 'I see a fish!'. The restrooms were clean, but the doors to the stalls didn't properly lock. We saw probably 2 or 3 homeless but they were all sleeping and kept to themselves. Overall, nice place to relax, have a drink, tan, wade in the water and look at all the fish swimming by. read more

Very bummed. I've come here for 40 years, and this trip have learned that there has been open sewage in two of my favorite swimming spots - the north area of Kahalu'u and here in Kailua Bay. Signs from the city at both the keiki beach and at the swimming area - 'Contaminated - no swimming, no bathing, etc - from the Health Department. Beautiful views above water, but locals told me absolutely they wouldn't swim there. read more

Great Beach Near the Kona Boys Beach Shack for Stand Up Paddle Boarding and Snorkeling Want a quieter protected beach in Kona? Come to Kamakahonu Beach. Easy to get to this beach in town. Fun to swim or snorkel in the calm water. There are also "cooling vents" under the sand, so the water is a bit cooler in certain spots as you splash in the clear aquamarine water. Not sure what to do with your day, or days, at the beach? Kayak? Stand Up Paddle Boarding? Snorkel? Why decide! At Kona Boys Beach Shack, they have it all! Eden, Dylan and Lakin were so helpful with setting us up with SUPs during Ironman. So much fun to paddle out to the coffee boat or just lazy around on the lagoon. Water was so cool and refreshing while we were rocking our Sportkini bikinis. Fun to see fish swimming underneath our boards as we paddled out in the harbor. SUPs were $29 per hour and kayaks were $19 per hour. Make sure to check-in on YELP. Very convenient location next to the Marriott King K hotel. Not a snorkeling spot whatsoever no matter what online sites say. Very murky and only some tropical fish but you could hardly see 4 feet away. It was actually quite every. Unless you literally have no other opportunity to snorkel, I wouldn't bother. There were no homeless. I wouldn't worry for this area anyways since the few homeless we saw while walking 7 miles stretching around Kona actually said hi to us and smiles. Side note: On the left side of the pier locals said early morning there may be dolphins (don't exceed the buoys!). read more

Great little beach to visit. Conveniently strolling out of the hotel onto the beach. Public beach so all can enjoy. You can visit the local farmers market on the pier or rent from the little scuba shack. It was nice to go from the pool to the ocean without having to get in a car. read more

Made the drive from North Waikaloa to this beach to snorkel and swim. We only find out there is no parking available. Gates are locked to a large parking lot with lots of empty spaces but yet cannot park anywhere near this beach. Major disappointment. Went up to the street where the free parking was and was already full. Now we were there early and it was already full 8:30am. Don't waste your time. Move on to Two step. Lots of great snorkeling and marine life to see. Get there early so, parking is also tight. read more

Very easy and simple small beach. There is some easy snorkeling with a surprising amount of reef fish. If you swim past King Kam's hut, make sure you stay to the right as there is a boat launch to the left. There is a swimmer rope set up to separate the boats. Local shop "Kona Boys" has a shack that rent beach supplies, SUP and kayaks plus have other random needs. Also the ABC store is close by if the shack doesn't have anything. Be mindful that the local "homeless" use the shower rinse off area as their regular shower, so make sure to wear slippers. If there is a cruise ship in town expect the beach to be full. read more

Not sure how to get in to the beach. We tried following maps directions, but were waved off by two men by an open gate. It would have been nice if they would have informed us of what to do, but all they did was rudely wave us off. My review will change if I find a way to get in. read more

This beach location is more about the activities around: shops, hotels, cruise ships, shops than about the beach itself which is a small little area but with nice soft and sandy beaches. Lots of restaurants and stores to visit, feels like tourist destinations like Waikiki and Southern California major beach fronts. read more

This is a nice little beach in the heart of Kailua-kona. It is great for those who want nice, relaxed swimming in a gentle beach with nice sand. it also has nice access to hotels, restaurants, etc. There are more interesting beachs further out of town but this one is more gentle, has more sand and gentler waves for those lookng for easy, peaceful swimming, and it always seemed more peaceful and quiet, with fewer crowds. It's also neat because it has the Ahu'ena Heiau, rebuilt old Hawaiian temple, right there. read more
