You really can't go wrong with a beach in Maui. This beach has a good amount of sand space, easy street parking and small parking lot, lifeguards, restrooms and showers. This beach was across from our Air B&B rental! I thought you had to go on those expensive boat tours to see fish and turtles! You DONT but next time I will still do the boat tour. You can see them at this beach! Go EARLY. Like 7 am early I would say 6:30 but I think it opens at 7 am. Water is much calmer. I was so afraid at first because it's the "Ocean" "sharks" lol but no sharks. If you want to see all types of fish go to the right where the hotel is swim out towards the rocks. I kid you not just that little area we saw A lot of fish! I wish I had a go pro! It was beautiful all the fish! We saw a couple of turtles but as soon as they saw us and the kids screaming turtle they swam away fast. We got lucky there was one turtle that STAYED with us and just chilled there looking at us. I was so excited I had to keep smacking my partners hands not to touch because the turtle came right up to us under the water. It was amazing it just stayed there, then when it got tired of us it sank down into a little opening between the rocks! They have another rocky area to the left. There's probably a lot to see there but I was too scared because the waves were bigger there and I didn't want to get thrown into the big rocks. We must of been in our hours about 3 hours people saw we were stuck there and came over to our side. I got so sun burnt so wear protective swim wear. They sell them at Ross for cheap. Better than the sun screen (that doesn't work) you will still get burnt! Make sure to buy the safe ones (they said it's better to use the protective swim wear) because even if it says it's safe for the coral reef it usually is not! If don't care about price they have them pretty much everywhere and the ABC stores, snorkel stores etc. Ross is my store and we found some for cheap! Boss frogs is right across too for snorkel gear! It was my first time and I was so sore from the swimming. Make sure to have the floaty things you can get. You will get exhausted quickly if you're not use to swimming in the currents, ocean etc. they have a lot of beaches but they said Kamaole is a good place for first timers Boss frogs has a map of beaches and make sure to look up the tide reports. read more

Of the three Kamaole beach parks, number 2 is the smallest in terms of both grass and sand square footage. You end up here if the other parks are full. PARKING: Street parking only, no dedicated parking lot. FACILITIES: Restrooms, showers, charcoal grills, picnic tables, recycling bins and lifeguard services. SURROUNDING FACILITIES: A tiny mall across the street houses 808 Deli, Fred's Mexican Cafe, Penny's Pizza & Pasta and Moose McGillycuddy's if you're hungry. THE BEACH: A built-up berm separates the grassy area from the beach so views aren't the greatest from there. But from the beach, views of Molokini Crater, Kahoolawe, Lanai and the dry end of the West Maui Mountains are second to none. Sand is a white/yellow mix with natural lava rock jetty's forming semi-protected coves on both ends of the beach. Swimming & snorkeling are good depending on weather conditions. We loved this beach so much that this was one beach we visited twice during our stay. There's plenty of parking, restrooms and spots to rinse off. The sunset is amazing here!!!! I love how there's stairs and a ramp to walk on to get to the beach. There's a lifeguard here that's super funny but he does his job well. If you plan to come, be mindful that this is a popular beach with the tourists - it can get super crowded and with a lot of people in the water and some with boogie boards. read more

One of the best beaches in Kihei. We came here twice on our visit for relaxing beach days in between action packed adventure days. It's the perfect place to relax to the sound of the ocean. We could see the whale mothers and their calves playing off in the distance which was super cool. You could hear their singing when you went under water too. The beach is also close to some shops and food spots to grab lunch. Parking isn't terrible if you arrive early enough. I highly suggest bringing a beach umbrella. The sun is intense! Beautiful beach with ample parking, clean bathrooms and easy access to the beach. There's lots of shade on the lawn and sturdy picnic tables for picnics. There are also lifeguards duty the posted hours--a blue shark entered the swimming area while I was in the water. The life guard calmly warned everyone and advised us to return to the beach. I don't know much about blue sharks and I appreciated the warning. For novices like me, this is a safe, beautiful beach with lots to see and to experience. And there are sea turtles here! read more

This is such a nice beach, and the turtles swim by!!!! We saw a turtle every time we got in the water, and the waters were clear and clean. People were spaced out on the sand, and everyone seemed friendly on the days we went. They have showers to wash up afterwards, and a little grassy are with a table and a hammock. Be aware though, the winds are pretty strong so it might not be a good idea to take beach umbrellas on some days. I had my umbrella deep in the sand, and 2 minutes later the wind picked it up and tossed it up in the air, blowing it away across the beach towards other people... so there I go running after an umbrella and yelling at people to get away from their possible death LOL. read more

This beach is very convenient from the place we stayed. Aston Banyan Resort (which we plan to visit again) It's just across the street. Also, the sunset here is beautiful and it's not so crowded like Lahaina and Kaanapali area, where the tourist spots are. We always come to Maui in the winter time, anytime except the Christmas holidays, to escape tourists with their kids. Kids are like me and my ex -we don't mix! We bring our own snorkel gear on the plane, as my wife is also a scuba diver, and has a prescription snorkel mask, and state of the art air tube. We take only one pair of fins -both of us have the same foot size, with the top of the fins sticking out of the top of our 21" carry on luggage. We're staying at the Maui Banyon, a luxury condominium resort complex, about a 12 minute walk to the center of Kamaole 2 beach -yes, there is a Kamaole 1 and Kamaole 3 beach, and no it is not named after King Kamaole I, II, and III.   Kamaole 2 is a very popular beach in the center of Kihei.  It is not a good snorkeling beach however.  Ulua beach, 2 miles south,  is one of the premiere snorkel sites in Maui.   OK Molokini is prettier with more fish, but now as full of boats as the Spanish Armada!  Besides why pay an arm and a leg just to go snorkeling, when you can snorkel right out the door of your hotel!? I've got on my swim pants, my XXL T-shirt, way too big, given to me by me ex wife, one of the few things she's given me, besides white hairs!  Both items, the swim pants and the T-shirt, not the ex-wife(!), to remain in Hawaii after I return home. Snorkeling is best done on sunny days in the morning, as the currents build up and muddy the water with sand particles by mid day. There's a parking lot for the public  right off of South Kihei road, and holds about 80 vehicles.  It is packed by 10am, restrooms, outdoor showers to remove sand.   If you are coming by car, I store my electronic car key in a heavy duty, water-proof plastic pouch, available at any dive shop or Amazon, and hang it around my neck, inside my T-shirt. . You know its going to be crowded, with dozens of condominium complexes  right across the street from the beaches, here in South Kihei.. I'm wearing a T-shirt, as the T-shirt prevents sunburn on the back when the sun shines bright, and offers protection from getting scratched on rocks and coral reef.   My wife wears a 0.5 mil light weight wet suit mainly for body warmth, and prescription goggles -that's why she can't rent out snorkel outfits for $10 a week from snorkel bob's!.   She's also wearing my fins, as hers are too long for the carry on luggage.  No, I can't fit into her shoes   I'm wearing my water and sand proof water shoes, good for snorkeling in calm waters.  In rough waters, I'm counting on the wife pulling  me out! We go get on our snorkel mask and breathing tube, wet the mask to seal it, and go in -me forward, and she with the fins backward, so she doesn't tear the fin.   Kamaole 2 is delinated by rocks on the extreme south side facing the Kamaloe 3 and the extreme north facing Kamaole 1 beach.   Today at 915am we head over to the north side rocks, and find a place to get into the 76 degree water.   I float on top of the water a good 50 feet, past the sandy bottom, and check out the green gray rocks on the bottom.  There is a big drop off here, and it is here sheltered by the line of rocks, that we see fish.  .     Big waves on the surface, with the water kicking up sand and mucking up my vision. I get out, and we head on down to Kamaole 3 beach, gear and towels in hand, me in my water shoes, going down the grassy areas connecting the two beaches. We will walk another 15 minutes the entire length of Kamaole 3 to the very southern section where there is a crescent shaped area of rocks acting as a barrier to snorkel. There we will see plenty of tropical fish, with the wife swimming out 100 yards to see turtles. All three beaches have large parking lots, toilets, outdoor showers for washing off the sand, but no changing rooms. So you have to arrive in your swimming trunks. Great place for seeing the tropical sunsets. My wife in her black wet suit looked a bit out of place going through street traffic back to the condo, in the 80 degree December weather! read more

We are staying in Kaanapali and the sunsets have been obscured by Lanai and clouds. So, we drove out to Kihei and found this stretch of beach that was perfect to watch a clear sunset. I even got to see the "green flash". The sun is setting and the orange yellow light is shrinking on the horizon. Lucky for both my husband and I, our vacation rental is down the street from this beach while we stayed in Maui for 10 days. So we came by this beach a few times during our trip. Kamaole Beach Park II is next door to Kamaole Beach Park I and III (by the way, you may be lucky to see turtles at Kamaole Beach Park III). Of the 3 beaches, I think Kamaole Beach Park II seems to be the most quiet (at least when we visited the 3 of the beaches while we were in Maui). This beach is clean with plenty of sand and sun for all who visit. The water is warmer than waters back at home where I am from. This beach is nice, but I do have to say that Kamaole Beach Park III is a little nicer with restrooms (please note that there are restrooms Kamaole Beach Park II too), a large park (plenty of shade in the park) and barbecue pits. But is a bit more populated though. Parking (free) is only available on the street. read more

Beautiful easy-access beach and very clean. The condo we had stayed at was across the street. The sand is soft and we sat here and swam in the water on our first night here. We also relaxed and watched the sunset. I had a few stares as I had set up my monopod with feet and my camera as we waited for the sunset. We enjoyed watching the guys go back and forth on the outrigger canoes. I swear the next time we come back to the Islands, I want to ride one of those. It looks like it's definitely a fun workout! The beach was not particularly packed. There was so much space for everyone to spread out. There was a nice gentle breeze at the time. It was definitely a wonderful way to unwind on our first evening in Maui. read more

Still a gem of a beach, but with all of mother nature's gems, there is some danger. Surf was particularly variable this year. Dangerous shorebreak signs are posted at most beaches, and this beach isn't usually a hazard, but this time... I got nailed. Hard. Rough day when you dive into a wave and it flips you over rips off all your snorkel gear and tosses you back onto the beach. I was worried I'd get dashed on the rocks. Embarrassing to be a fairly experienced snorkeler taken down by a wave leaving my gear out in the surf like a yard sale.. That day ended early. Best time to get into the water is earlier in the morning 7-11am is the best and most calm time of day. Other days were spectacular snorkelling. This year, more turtles than we could count. Eels, fish galore. Some varieties of fish I hadn't seen before after being at this beach for 6 years, and needed to look them up in my Hawaiian Reef Fishes book. The reef between Kamaole II and III is usually a great spot for critters, but this year we found the warmer water and unseasonal El Niño weather made a difference for the turtles. We like this beach not only because it's a short 2 minute walk down the road from the condo we like to stay at, but the sand is clean and soft, lifeguards, and amazing variety of sea life. We like to visit in late November, it's a bit quieter at this time of year, and the beach is busy but not really crowded. Both Paul S. & Winnie L's review (a couple of years old, but it's still spot on) have great details on this beach. If you are shopping for a reef-friendly sunscreen like Badger brand - it's safer for you and the reef. Wear a rasher available at every ABC or surf shop or clothes rated for sunscreen abilities at the beach. It's cheaper than sunscreen in the long run. We had hours of fun at Kamaole Beach Park 2. For this June day, we had some cloud cover, gentle breeze and 88°F. Be ready for a sandy experience. As the waves break, the surf is full of soft sand. There are showers near the restroom. Sand in your shorts, hair, ears! The kids did not worry about it. We packed sand toys for sculpting and digging. Also, I used a backpack for a picnic lunch. I was surprised there were no birds to scavenge our food. Watch out for the drag as the water pulls back from the shore. I am not sure if this is categorized as a riptide or undertow. I just made sure to stand in the water to be near the children. We saw turtles in the waves. Pack swim goggles and snorkel gear. read more

There is an okina (apostrophe) in the official names. We went to Kam II because it's right across from where we were staying for night at the Aston Maui Banyan condos. It made it easy to go back and get stuff, like extra batteries for the GoPro. Aside from turtles and other native fishes for snorkelers, there are also a lot of sand crabs to watch for beached whales like me. These sand crabs are really shy but when they do peek out of the holes, they are entertaining to watch. As with the other beaches on Maui, we try to arrive before 7:30am when the water is calmer, the sun is not quite out and most people are somewhere other than the beach. After 9:30am, families start coming in, and that's when we leave and get on with our day. ===Comparison with other beaches=== If you're in Kihei and not staying at the fancy places down in Wailea, I think Kam I, II or III are the best beaches without having to drive far and you get the best sunsets because these face directly west. Big Beach and Little Beach face southwest so Kaho'olawe was be in the way. Kam II is in the middle of I and III in terms of what they have to offer. Kam I has the largest beach while Kam III has the largest park and smallest beach area. The beach at Kam II is wide and long enough to have enough personal space and still not be too far away from the water. Separating Kam I and Kam II are some condos and another park. Separating the beaches of Kam II and III are a lot of black lava rocks where the turtles hang out in the morning. Three were spotted this past Monday. Pretty good of Unlike other tidepools, I didn't see anything live. Compared with Big Beach in Makena, Kam II is obviously smaller. While you can splash around at Kam II, you can only boogie board at Big Beach (BB). While Big Beach has sand fleas and sand flies, Kam II has sand ants and sand crabs. I didn't have any food with me so the ants were not bothersome. Little Beach is a nude beach so no thanks - it's a small beach and you have to climb a bunch of jagged rocks from Big Beach to access - double no thanks. Compared with Napili Bay, Kam II is more accessible to the public. We stayed at Hale Napili so it's basically in front of our studio patio. I didn't see any public access and street parking in Napili is very difficult unless you stay at one of the properties with designated parking. The sand is softer at Napili than at Kam II. Napili is also a much longer beach that curves and becomes part of the Kapalua Coastal Trail. Kam II affords safer waters than DT Fleming but DT Fleming has more parking and more picnic tables. You can snorkel at Kam II but you cannot snorkel at DT Fleming due to perpetually strong currents. Kam II and Kapalua Bay are a little hard to compare as they both have what you need. Kapalua is more exclusive and doesn't have the car traffic that you'll get at Kam II with the one-lane S. Kihei Rd right there. Honolua Bay has better snorkeling than Kam II but Honolua is for snorkelers only. It's all rounded rocks so you can't even lie down. You are not allowed to wear sunscreen as it pollutes the water and kills the fish. However, there is a nice green trail from the cliff road down to the waters that you won't get in Kihei. Honestly, if you're in Maui, you'll have a good time wherever you lay down your beach towel. Kam II doesn't pop up first on Google Maps between the 3 Kam beachs, so I think it's the place to be...fewer people means more of paradise to yourself. Mahalo and a hui hou! read more

If you're in Kihei and looking for a nice beach, with soft sand, restrooms, showers and Lifeguards on duty, this is your beach. It's not a very big beach, but it offers so much for the beachgoers. Street parking is relatively easy to find and it seems that most of the crowds congregate at either Kam I or Kam III, which is fine by me. You can feel safe to lay-down your towel, chair, umbrella, etc. and not feel as if you've invaded anyone's space. The sand is very soft and almost powdery like. Based upon the time of year you go, the surf can be relatively flat or like today when the winds are up, the waves are a bit bigger. That just makes going into the water that much more fun. The beach is very sandy and extends into the ocean, so you don't run into a lot of rocks when you're in the water. Lay down your towel and jump into the water. You're bound to enjoy your time here. read more

Kamaole Beach Park II - Kam 2 - Beaches Near Me - Kihei, Hawaii

Kam II beach is a great beach just steps from where we usually stay in Maui. When we ask locals about beaches they always mention Kam I, II and III beaches as some of the best on the island. We do spend some time here as it is very convenient but we also like checking out a lot of other beaches, coves and secret snorkelling spots. We can say after all of our experiences that Kam II does have great snorkelling. We almost always see turtles swimming around the coral here. If you haven't had success spotting turtles at other areas then I would try one of the Kam beaches. On years when the water is colder than average I hear that turtles are more rare. The beach is very sandy and there are very few rocks leading out into the water, especially the middle part of the beach. Snorkelling and aquatic viewing is best along the side of the beach where the volcanic rocks and coral are. There are lifeguards on this beach and please heed any posted warning flags. We usually come in off season so we have never seen the beach really crowded. There is parking along the road if you can get it but if you are within walking distance then you have no reason to not check out this beach! read more

This is my favorite beach of ALL MAUI so far. I went to Wailea and Makena State Park beach( these beaches have really big waves) also other beaches and the lifeguard has announced that it can take you in and he said " it can spin you like a blender under water" which is scary so we asked the lifeguard where to go and he pointed us here. Clean long white beach with smaller waves :) and also a turtle swam right beside us. I think this is a good place if you want to swim or have kids. I will definitely be returning. read more

This is a great beach park. We went to snorkel and had some great experiences coming face to face with sea turtles feeding on the reefs in the area. Plenty of tropical fish, too many to name. Definitely a must see if looking for some Honu action. read more

Snorkeling was great on the first day and then went down from there but that was because of a storm that was coming in. The first day we sawa baby turtle. It was amazing. I was hoping for some good tide pooling in the rocks on the west side, but it was honestly a bit disappointing - low on interesting sea life, just some brown fish that were great at hiding, and something that moved quickly and was maybe a crab. Out of Kam I, Kam II and Kam III beaches, this is my least favorite. It does not have the convenience and the mixture of things as Kam I and it does not have the large and open space area like Kam III. However, like all beaches in South Maui, this is a solid good beach park. I would definitely go here if Kam I and Kam III is too busy. read more

Beach was OK. Sand was kind of black and dirty. There's not much snorkeling, but you can splash around a bit.
