My last time on this block was in 2018 when I ate at Kung Fu Xiao Long Bao( my dear Yelp friend Andie also was a regular) - now permanently closed. I did not know that. I parked and saw the finishing touches on the new restaurant replacing Kung Fu XLB and decided to try a neighbor. Best decision ever: 1) Kan Wah was busy - 16 seats inside were occupied. Phone ringing nonstop. 2) The chefs were crankin' and laughing and having fun while they cooked. 3) a)The owner was a great guy. I opted for the Shrimp in Garlic Sauce lunch special plus extra garlic sauce and broccoli as add ons. A great piping hot entree/dish/ container came out on a red tray in 240 seconds. Tasty! The broccoli was well done.The shrimp pieces were huge, fresh and juicy. The sauce - not sweet or heavy at all. Light n delicious. The pork fried rice was gorgeous. The owner asked to ensure - pork ok? The egg drop soup that came with - best in NY! b) Accommodating owner - elderly local customer came in to eat. She brought her own plates and utensils. He said no worries and served her white rice on one plate and her eggplant in garlic sauce on the other. It was love and joy to see her enjoy her meal. * Ray Ray was inspired! Her dish looked so yummy that I ordered the same to go. c) Truck driver from NJ pulled up and got his favorite beef n broccoli extra extra spicy. d) Mom, Dad and daughter in school uniform came in at 2:35 pm and got some delicious fried chicken with pork fried rice. Yes typical NYC Chinese takeout with the above nice additions in a simple no frills atmosphere but dynamite food. Open at 10:30 . Plenty of free parking on side streets or $1.50 per hour up front. OMG! Kan Wah Restaurant is a keeper. The food here is delicious. You know the food is good when you come back and order it a second time around. Trying to find a place for lunch. Notice Kan Wah Restaurant as I walked by. Look at the menus and ordered the Beef with Broccoli lunch special with Wonton soup. The food was cooked just right. I enjoyed the soup and the Wonton was not my thing. Prefer fried wontons instead. Will get that next time when I am in the neighborhood again. Yes, the place looks like a hole in the wall. Brings back so many memories of the take out restaurant growing up. Folks this is a busy establishment. Locals, students and patrons come to Kan Wah Restaurant to order entrees and lunches here. This is a review for dry-cooked beef chow fun. It is DELICIOUS. The noodles have the perfect chew, the onions, scallions, beef are also perfectly cooked and seasoned. Not too oily. Service is initially gruff.... (but that's how New York and Queens rolls), but once you crack a smile, a "thank you," the mean owner/manager quickly softens and is actually quite a nice guy. The food is good but not worth the trouble of dealing with a nasty arrogant customer service lacking jerk of a manager. He is the absolute worst. He screams at you on the phone and doesn't allow you to speak. He assumes that he knows what you're going to order. He also assumes your location. Yesterday my colleagues and I decided to order inexpensive Chinese food. I called in the order at 12:20pm. The order consisted if two orders of fries with chicken wings chopped up, a small pork lo mein and three cans of ginger ale. My job is literally ten minutes away by foot and five minutes away by car. I am unsure why it took over an hour for us to receive the food. Oh wait it's because both the manager and driver are idiots. I gave the manager the address several times. In which case he decided to speak over me and ask emergency entrance or main entrance? Um, neither. I repeated my work address slowly. He says okay and hangs up the phone. Totally surprised by this I asked myself how the heck will the driver contact me once he's here? Our delivery took over an hour to come. The manager calls me on the phone yelling, speaking aggressively, and accusing me of giving him the wrong address. Of course I let him have it and told him he's a fool for assuming my location and what I wanted to order. I also made sure to tell him he needs to calm down because I do not appreciate his tone of voice. At that point he did. Once I said what I needed to I hung up the phone. Five minutes later the driver calls and insists that he is outside my workplace. Wrong again. The driver was beyond lost and quite frankly I gave up on having Chinese food for lunch. The driver calls back again asking me to meet him at the main entrance. I told him that'll be a strong no being that my address is not at the main entrance but the one I provided several times. Finally after another ten minutes pass by I see the driver at the far end of my work block. I tried waving him over. Instead he was consumed in his phone. He gets in his car and I wave him down. As soon as he got out the car he starts yelling. Pointing at the receipt telling me, "make sure you know address". I said make sure you're not dumb. Clearly you were lost and wanted me to meet you somewhere that was not my address because the one I provided was too difficult for you to comprehend. He goes on to say I was waiting at the house. I told him that's not the same address and you did what you wanted to. I snatched my food, gave him the money and walked off. read more

This is a decent quick Chinese bento lunch place. It s so busy at the meal time. Piles of takeouts behind counter. The order taker lady was so multi-tasking but she remained nice n patient. A rare find in any Chinese restaurants. The food is so much more quality than most Chinese takeout places. The price is amazingly reasonable for its quality. It is mainly a take-out restaurant, but eat-in is ok too with 4 tables. I like this restaurant because their menu has more items suitable for Chinese, not like other take-out which are for non-Chinese. And they are cheap too, $6.25 for the all-day special. Taste is acceptable. read more

We didn't eat in the restaurant, but instead ordered to-go delivery which was free since we were in close enough proximity for delivery (God bless New York and capitalistic pressures!), our AirBNB being in Queens (we tried ordering from another Chinese restaurant but they couldn't deliver to us because weren't in the same zip code). The food came nice and warm and plentiful with a friendly delivery guy. We ordered sweet and sour chicken (my personal favorite from this meal), beef and broccoli, lo mein (or chow mein for my fellow west coasters), and white steamed rice. We split it between 3 poor and hungry college students and had leftovers. (I feel really bad because I don't know how much we were supposed to tip the delivery guy, but I gave him a dollar to cover our main costs and told him to keep the change. When I come back to New York, I'll try to tip better!) I was satisfied with the service. I'll definitely try this place again if I'm in the area. read more

Came here on very little time but was very surprised. The guy working the counter was very funny, the chicken from my chicken and broccoli was so fresh, and so was the broccoli as well. I also ordered an egg roll so everything came out to around $8ish, which is a great deal for the amount of food you get. Egg roll was good but not the overall best I've had, but it's still decent. I come here often enough to warrant far more than a 3-star review but there is something slightly uncomfortable about awarding four precious yelp stars to a place that is (1) grungy enough to make you cringe when you walk in, (2) greasy enough to make you want to take a postprandial nap at the chipped linoleum table, (3) basic enough to find almost anywhere else, and (4) a place that would never, ever cross a foodie's list of 'must-go-to's. Still, sometimes, grungy, greasy, basic, and non-foodie is exactly what you need. Bare confession: Kan Wah is on my speed dial, right alongside my man, my family, and 911. For nearly a decade, this Chinese takeout fare has been my proverbial tub of ice cream during every messy heartbreak, the indulgence that broke multiple diets, and the easy fix for every night I didn't feel like cooking. The portions are great, the prices have seen very little upward movement, and they've added a new combination plate menu that gets you popular entree + fried rice + egg roll for no more than $8. I'm also quite fond of their vegetable chow fun, which is devoid of the usual garbage fillers (water chestnuts, I'm looking at you here) and General Tso's tofu, which hits all the right spicy notes. Broccoli with garlic sauce is a little on the sweeter side than other places, but also a dependable go-to. My family is also a big fan of their beef and broccoli, sesame chicken, and shrimp with garlic sauce. Order enough and you get certain freebies like free drinks (or, as we recently scored during our last $30+ delivery order, a free entree). No one's ever gotten sick, food poisoning, or found strange things in their food and the only negative aftereffect we've ever had to deal with is the poundage gained from scarfing down all that takeout. Dining in is a risky and sometimes uncomfortable affair. During the colder months, the heat isn't on, and it's usually too hot to dine in during the summer because the a/c seems to be just for decoration (might be how they keep the food costs down), but there are three old booths there if you need a place to nosh. When we place orders for delivery, the guys usually makes it to our door within the half hour (and they've come to our doorstep so often that they hardly need to ring the doorbell) with all the politeness and cheerfulness you'd want but wouldn't expect. read more

Found this place via yelp 2 weeks ago. It is not that far from my school and sometimes I get tired of campus food so I tend to venture out. The first visit I had here I ordered the lunch special chicken and broccoli with vegetable fried rice with eggroll and my friend ordered the same chicken with pork fried rice with the soup. The chicken and broccoli was pretty standard and the sauce was tasty. The eggroll was horrid and the cabbage had absolutely no flavor. The wonton soup tasted. actually it didn't have much of a taste, more like pork wontons swimming in water. The sesame chicken was pretty standard as well. Now fast-forward to a week later, I really wanted to give this place another chance to redeem their selves which I now kick myself in the but for. I once again ordered the chicken with broccoli and this time the chicken tasted very rubbery. My friend ordered the fried half chicken and I must say it was pretty good! Very tasty, but I do wish they would have fried it a little harder. As we get to the end of the fried half chicken, I notice FRIED red hairs in the skin of the chicken. I spit out the food in my mouth and alert my friend. I look up and notice that the lady at the front counter also has red hairs. I am absolutely disgusted. She was not wearing a hair net, and her hair was done in a ponytail. We threw out the rest of our food and went on our way. I didn't alert the woman at the counter simply because I knew that this would have been brushed off. I understand that this is a take-out restaurant but service does count. When people walk into your establishment you should welcome them with a simple hello and when they leave THANK them for your business. The food is okay here, but it's not sanitary. Who knows what other unsanitary practices they have. I am bummed out that this place did not work for me, but well there are a bunch of other Chinese restaurants on this block. My favorite Chinese restaurant for take out service. For over 40 years I have been ordering from Kan Wah. Their food is very good. Always consistent. Not greasy like other Chinese food I have tried from other restaurants. Since I stopped eating chicken, they will allow me to order "Orange Shrimp" that is not on their menu. Kan Wah is not your typical chinese restaurant as the other yelper suggested. Other chinese restaurants in manhattan try to be pretty and sit down. Kan Wah is down and dirty and let's face it, the best chinese food always is. The food is not always the best, it depends on who is cooking. Kan Wah himself is an older chinese man and he is cool. He is a great cook. I love it when he is in the kitchen. Their egg rolls are the best I've ever had. Totally recommend. Good choices are the house special anything, like egg foo young and lo mein. I love their sweet and sour chicken their sauce is very good and not watery like others. I don't like their general tso's since it is not crispy like some other places, but my boyfriend and his brother love it. There is also a vegetarian dish that is not on the menu and it is so good, General Tso's TOFU. Trust me it is good! If you don't eat meat, this is for you. The spare ribs are popular with them too. Kan Wah is also one of the cheapest chinese places I have been to with loyal customers who come again and again for their half fried chicken, chicken wings, chicken wings with garlic sauce and pork fried rice. Old School Chinese-American takeout. Not a place I want to eat in at but perfect for takeout if you are anywhere nearby. I've been a customer, under different owners for about forty years and it is better than it ever was. Cheap, large portions, very fast preparation, tasty.
