When I visited, the exhibitions were Novel Art - Narrative Paintings by Michael Young and Ian Young, 100 minus 5: Variations in the art of Printmaking and Unpacking Chinese Apartment Art. The rest of the collection was not that impressive or vast, but a small museum is better that no museum. I would definitely return on future visits to Topeka for rotating exhibits. This was when the Democrats were the pro slavery party and were trying to force Kansas into the union as a slave state. My goodness; how times have have reversed the major party roles over the last century and a half! Ironically Lecompton uses the image of Lincoln in their promotional tourist signs, very strange since Lecompton was the headquarters of his enemy - strange. Thank goodness for the Free Stater Jayhawks to save the day. The building itself is not worth the trip here, but bundled with the Territorial Capital and Constitution Hall, it's worth a 5 mile drive off the interstate or 10 miles from Lawrence.

The Kansas Sampler Festival was a fun a way to explore the entire state in a few hours at one park…read more It moves locations every few years, and this year it was in Wamego, about 15 miles east of me. Eric R. and I found parking in downtown Wamego and walked to the park. Adult tickets were $5 each which is a fair price. There were maps everywhere, with different entertainers at different stages and ampitheatres. Tents were spread throughout the big park, each one highlighting a different area of the state. Inside were booths of CVBs and representatives from various cities. In the vendor/KS products booth, we met the writer of the Kansas Trail Guide book that is not even out on amazon yet. We talked to him about how he explored the whole state for hikes and trails, and we bought his book. We look forward to exploring the state for hikes and Eric R.'s cycling passion. There were some food trucks and booths from around the state. Eric R. tried BBQ from Halverson. We heard the bison burgers were great but the line was too long and we had to go back to MHK. I was intrigued by the Lindsborg tent - there is a Swedish community there a little under 2 hours from us, so we hope to visit Lindsborg soon!

A zoo is a place we need to support! On a road trip we went out of our way to get some exercise and walk around the Topeka Kansas Zoo. It was a hot summer day and the perfect place to explore a new city and zoo! This is a small facility so every person that comes here makes a big impact on the budget. The animals at this zoo are so amazingly entertaining and beautiful! They need your support. Visit in person for only $10 entry fee. If you can't make it in person, show up by going online to support these animals and the Topeka Zoo. Remodeling projects are in progress and funding is necessary so that the residents have improved habitats. Find the Topeka Kansas Zoo online and make a donation!

The area for kids where they can take the train ride, go to the zoo and support our local community is where it's at. There are plenty of spots to grill out and there is a nice community pool. Indoors, they have some interesting displays of guns, knives, bayonets, uniforms and all kinds of other military gear. It's kind of a hodgepodge but lots of fun to wander through. I saw Anastasia last night and the cast, staging, costuming and music were all excellent…read more The service, however, was extremely poor. We ordered popcorn for intermission over an hour prior to the start of the show, knowing that it isn't delivered until intermission. They waited until the second act was beginning to tell us they "didn't make enough" and we wouldn't be getting any. They gave us nachos and promised to comp one of the 3 orders, then charged me for it anyway. The nachos were cold and soggy when they arrived about 3 minutes left in intermission. I gave my credit card in good faith when the check was dropped early in the intermission, then had the wrong amount charged to my credit card (over double my actual total) and someone else's credit card presented to me not once but twice. It took 10-15 minutes for the mess to be sorted between the manager and server and the server spent most of that chatting and laughing with what appeared other table involved. The manager also blew off my concerns about their disorganized service and lack of communication regarding availability of the menu. My party and I were not high maintenance, or demanding. There was no obvious reason for the chaos, besides a clear lack of organization and no managerial care for customer experience.
