This cozy little place probably has the best Omakase you're gonna get for the price. At only $63 (~$80 with tax + tip), this chef's-choice course meal is absolutely amazing. All the seafood is super fresh, and the flavors are lined up perfectly. I especially love how the raw black snapper and ama ebi head are initially used as garnish but then reintroduced as their own dishes later on: the black Snapper gets deep fried and you have a choice of either deep frying the ama ebi head as well or adding it into a miso soup. The service is also great and the hostess is very nice and guides you in how each dish should be best eaten (e.g. no soy sauce, squeeze lemon, etc) The restaurant is located in a tiny plaza with semi-limited parking and seems to be reservation-only (with max party of 4, but they made a special exception for us for 5) so call ahead! My brother brought me here for the Omakase! I Must say, EVERYTHING was delicious! The value of the entire meal is stupendous! I left there with a full stomach. The highlight of the meal for me was the left-over fried Greek black snapper that started with the sashimi....once you finish the sashimi, they remove the remainder of the fish and perfectly fry it! We ate the entire fried fish, bones and all, they simply were fried in such a manner that everything just crumbled in your mouth! This is such a hidden gem in the South Bay!! A friend recommended it but it took a while for me to go, I'm SO glad I finally did. $68 for such an epic and delicious omakase meal! First was the whole fish sashimi! They then fry the rest of the fish for you to eat at the end. We ended up taking it home for leftovers bc it was soo much food. Then it's 5 more plates with two sushi pieces on each. I don't love wasabi and was able to request the sushi pieces without wasabi. One of the sushi dishes is a sweet shrimp. You can get the shrimp head fried or in the miso soup. My partner went for fried and I think that was better bc then you could eat the whole thing and he got seaweed/tofu in his miso soup, while my soup just had the shrimp head. We were soo full and happy at the end. It's an amazing value for the quality and amount of food! You do need reservations, we saw them turn away ppl who tried to walk in. We had a wonderful meal for two on our wedding anniversary. Service - 10/10 they put a lot of attention to detail and made sure we have an enjoyable experience. The server lady noticed we were on a date and asked to take a photo for us without us asking! Food - 9/10 would totally come back. There are so many dishes and for the price of $72, it was very well worth it. The portions may look deceivingly small, but we left the place STUFFED. My faves were the toro, uni, tuna hand roll and the yuzu sorbet. We thought they could use a tad less vinegar for the rice in the chirashi since it was pretty sour for us. Insane Omakase crafted by Chef Kantaro! This is a small shop in Torrance that specializes in Omakase. They do not have a la carte and they are by reservation only. They make sure to prepare all the ingredients before you come in and they are only open for a short period of time at night. Their omakase is only $72/person and it comes with one plate of sashimi, 10 pieces of sushi, one hand roll, soup, and ice cream. I found kantaro on yelp while searching for a nice omakase spot for hubby's birthday- so glad I did! This is a little hole in the wall restaurant run by a husband and wife team. Kind of hidden in a small plaza and has the vibes of the "midnight diner." Super cute and have lots dodgers decors (owners are huge baseball/ LAD fans). They only offer omakase so there's no menu, other than the drinks menu (great selection of sake! They also have other drink choices). Such great service. Reservation is required so make sure to call ahead. We were most impressed by their food! We've had omakase before but felt like this place really did it the best. About 8 course or so of fresh sushi, sashimi, oysters, chirashi bowl, salad, fried fish, fried shrimp, and more. Very generous portion and food was beyond great quality- fresh and prepared carefully and beautifully. The sushi rice was also soft and well seasoned (warm, flavored, and not over powering). My gf and her husband have been raving about Kantaro Sushi for years and we have been meaning to make it out to Torrance to check out their omakase. Since my cousin had a birthday coming up, we decided to make a reservation. Unfortunately, they couldn't accommodate a party of 7 so our husbands had to stay home. Womp, womp. We ended up with a party of 4 for dinner. I miscalculated my travel time from South OC and ended up 5 minutes late due to traffic. The restaurant is located in a sketchy strip mall next to a liquor store and laundromat. Parking is tight. The omakase is $63 per person before taxes and gratuity. It consists of 10-courses. Once seated, we were served sunomono (cucumber salad) and a small green salad. We each had a hot green tea and water. I wasn't sure if this was included with the service as I had arrived a few minutes after the girls were seated. The next course was the snapper sashimi and sea anemone. Our server, let us know what we were eating and which sauce to pair our fish with. The presentation of the whole fish was beautiful. Then the nigiri courses came out: toro, ahi, halibut, yellowtail, Hoikkado scallop, Baja uni, Alaskan salmon roe, a mini chirashi bowl with shrimp head, and shrimp nigiri. The original snapper head that was served on the plate with the sashimi was taken back to the fryer and presented to us a second time as a fried fish dish. The shrimp head from the chirashi bowl was also fried per request (we were asked if we wanted it fried or added to our soup). The miso soup was brought out as with the fried items. The final pieces were: unagi, a toro hand roll, and tomago with strawberry jam. For dessert, we were given the option of green tea or red bean ice cream. Needless to say, we were stuffed at the conclusion of our meal. Our service was lovely and timed well. Our party was able to split our check four ways. Kantaro is a mom & pop establishment with outdated decor, but don't let that deter you from enjoying a meal here. If you're looking for a solid omakase experience, Kantaro is it. Just an amazing experience. I've been here numerous times, and without fail, every time it's been fantastic. Even during the height of pandemic, when indoor dining was shut down, Kantaro was putting together lovely takeout sushi dinners and helping me pack my car with the neatly packed takeout box. It's a small restaurant and you need to make reservations in advance. There's pretty much only one thing on the menu--the omakase. It's the chef's special, an assortment of sushi and fish that are the sushi chef's special creations. Sometimes there are slight modifications to the courses, but you can usually rely on there being certain items every time: toro nigiri, amberjack nigiri, uni, ikura, sweet shrimp, tuna hand roll, and fried fish. One of the fun parts is after you are served the sweet shrimp, you have the option of having the head deep fried (the only correct choice IMO) or in soup. Another cool part of the meal is having fish served to you as sashimi, after which the rest of the fish is fried and served to you later with dipping sauce. The service is impeccable. Gotta love this mom and pop sushi spot. It's not the typical all you can eat sushi, it's a completely different experience. There's no menu here. It's "Omakase" (お任せ) which means that you entrust the chef to curate the meal. I didn't know what was coming out and that was part of the fun. The 7-course meal was a surprise at every turn. The first "wow" moment was when a whole fish on a plate was brought. It actually was sliced on the underside and there's reason for it. It also came with oyster (nice!). Then there was the plate with buttered rice with a rice of prawn or lobster rice, this too comes back later. The unfinished half-fish from earlier came back in fried form! Then in the next dish there came miso soup with the prawn heads for flavor! There's so much detail I missed out and I may not have even been entirely accurate, but all in all, this sushi experience was unlike any other and should be experienced by all sushi lovers. read more

Nestled in the corner of a plaza that appears off the beaten path of Torrance, lies a little hole in the wall sushi joint serving up delicious and economical omakase. I've been known to pick restaurants where many a times friends would have to ask, "Are you sure about this place?" Kantoro Sushi was no exception. The plaza is tiny with very tight parking where most of the draw appears to be a liquor store. Additionally once you walk in, the layout seems more like a diner with older booths and some sports decor. However don't judge this restaurant by its looks or location. Reservations can be made via phone. We made ours approximately one week in advance and it wasn't difficult. The fish selection is quite impressive, especially for the price, with the black snapper being the most interesting and memorable. It's offered as a sashimi portion, presented on the fish which is then taken back for an agemono (fried) course after. The other stand out items were the yuzu adorned halibut and scallop. The yellowtail, toro, toro handroll, mini chirashi with sweet shrimp, yellowtail and tuna and eel were also exceptional. I thought the ikura, uni, salmon battera and unagi were just ok on our visit and I didn't care much for the tamago with cream cheese and jelly. The meal is closed out with miso soup and ice cream. You have the option of frying your shrimp head or having it in the soup. While adding it to the soup gives a new depth to your miso, I have to agree frying it might be the best bet because then you can eat it whole! I think this place is really great especially for the value. As of this review, omakase is about 68 per person. The portion is pretty big, especially considering the fried fish and the mini chirashi. The best value for Omakase in the South Bay! Kantaro is located in an unassuming strip mall plaza in Torrance. When we arrived, a homeless man approached us asking for money. Lovely way to start a date night. We walked in and we were 10 minutes early. The sushi chef (the owner) told us to sit down but that he won't start our Omakase until exactly our reservation time. Initially bothered by his statement, I respected the precision. Foreshadowing of great things to come? Apparently, yes. I won't walk you through every single dish but rather my highlights. Having said that, there was never a dull moment or disappointing dish. If you are within reasonable driving distance, make your reservation as soon as you can. The sashimi plate was presented beautifully and I thought every piece of snapper and tuna was fresh and delicious. On the same plate was some ankimo (monk fish liver) and it was rich and soft. The toro was very good. It was buttery and easily melted in my mouth. Speaking of buttery, the hokkaido scallop was simply amazing. This was my first time having raw scallop, so I don't have a baseline. Still, it was superb. I appreciated the dash of spice on it, and a squeeze of lemon helped bring out the sweetness. I am not a big fan of salmon roe, but this place sold me on it. I guess it's because I use salmon roe as fishing bait when I go trout fishing, but my fishing memories disappeared as each roe provided a burst of rich succulent flavor. When the roe was served was also the uni. I appreciated the generous amounts of uni, and yes, it was rich and sweet. I want to go back to Kantaro just to eat some more of their uni. Remember the snapper sashimi dish from the beginning? Well, the same fish comes out again deep fried. Piping hot and say bye-bye to any fish and chips dish you've had. You know it's fresh because you just devoured half it in the form of sashimi. I love sweet shrimp and this place does it very well. They make shrimp stock from the shrimp's head and serve you the shrimp head deep fried (as do other sushi joints). The body of the shrimp is served as a cocktail with some tuna, masago, and lemon. I liked the creativity and presentation of it. For the value, coming here for the Omakase is an excellent choice. Don't expect a fancy sushi restaurant with dim lighting and plush seating. This was one heck of an experience for omakase sushi. Apparently, they require reservations in advance (at least in the evening), in order to prepare for your arrival with sufficient supplies - they serve you so much, you won't go home hungry. In order: Potato salad and picked cucumber - good, authentic, I've had this before, good way to start. Sea scallop, halibut, amberjack and otoro (tuna belly) sushi - oh my god, the amberjack is the best I've had, just amazing. Otoro was quite good too, for not being my favorite cut of fish especially. Halibut was also delicious. Sea scallop was probably the best sea scallop sashimi I've had, which isn't saying much but still it was very good. Enormous centerpiece of sea bass with monkfish liver and tuna - what a work of art! Sea bass was delectable, especially the thinner cuts. Tuna was spot on, monkfish liver was quite liver-y but not too weird like I've experienced it before. Amazing presentation. Chirashi cocktail with sweet shrimp, and pressed nigiri with salmon and shrimp - very creative presentation, all components good and fresh and worked well together. Sweet shrimp, always one of my favorites, stood out as quite delicate and fresh. Fried shrimp head afterward was impossibly light and crispy. Tempura fried sea bass - from the raw presentation earlier, basically the best delicately fried fish I've ever had I think. At this point I'm getting full. But wait, there's more... Uni and salmon roe - not my favorite things, especially uni which I generally avoid. Here they were both reasonably edible, which is a huge improvement over the ordinary sushi joints especially for the uni. Spicy tuna hand roll and eel nigiri, and tamago with apricot - comfort food near the end, tasted just right. The tamago, a test for the chef, was good but not really great, with the apricot being a nice unique touch. Overall - amazing deal at around $50 per person, really a fantastic experience.
