I only booked a room here because it looked like it was in a nice quiet location. It looks beautiful but don't expect any luxuries. I like to unwind with TV but there are none in the rooms. There is one you can share in a game room. My husband and had been driving all day and didn't want to drive back to town so we had their buffet dinner there. It was almost $60 for 2 and it was the nastiest food I'd ever had. The creamed corn and the mashed potatoes looked identical. I had a roasted chicken breast that was so dry I could barely get it down. At least they had a salad bar. They do include breakfast at least and I will say that was pretty good. This is a place that holds lots of retreats and conventions. This weekend there was a large male church group that gathered in the hall chatting to say good night in the hall way. Not a very peaceful place after all. read more

I was at Kanuga for a 4-day conference. The grounds are beautiful, and I made use of the easy walking trails when I needed down time. I stayed in a cabin that was described as "lovingly restored," which I thought meant it would be really nice, but it's actually more of a "old-Spot-is-blind-and-deaf-and-smelly-but-we-still-love-him" kind of love. Expect clean towels but no shampoo, hair dryer, etc. Not terrible, and maybe good if you have little kids & want extra space. Just know that the inn rooms are probably nicer. My big challenge was the food because I prefer to eat plant-based. The "vegetarian options" are really not options for more than a day or so: intermittent imitation meat products and even, once, a tray of plain cooked jack fruit (ew) set out as a main protein. Normally I would just shift to salad/breakfast bar stuff--peanut butter, yogurt, hummus--but these weren't available for the most part. I had spinach (fresh!) & chickpeas lunch and dinner for three days. If you prefer animal protein, this won't be an issue--but, again, it's better to know going in that this is not a veg-friendly menu. I'll add that I was there in October, which is the BIG wedding party month, so the kitchen was most likely overtaxed. The kitchen and rooms staff seem to work incredibly hard. So here's the deal, Kanuga is a series of different camps and facilities, but they are all AWESOME! Kanuga is a faith-based (Episcopalian) retreat center. It sits on 1400 acres and there are trails and paths and a lake and cabins and community buildings. It isn't fancy and that's part of its charm. Each cabin is a little bit different (number of bedrooms/bathrooms/type of porch) but all feature twin beds. The community dining room (where you're called to meals by a recorded bugle) has healthy nutritious food, with Southern flair. The staff is super accommodating to folks with special needs, like allergies or food intolerances. All meals were served buffet style when I was there. I've attended both conferences and now, the summer guest period at Kanuga. Honestly, I can't wait to go back. From the meals, to the adult arts & crafts, to the downtime (with room for hikes and/or naps), to the fabulous staff, this was seriously the most relaxing vacation I've ever had. read more

We have been coming here for 3 generations. It's sad to see the level of service that this place has degraded to. Barely cooked breakfast. Ran out of coffee. Dirty dishes and no glasses to be found. Folks can always justify the cabins as rustic living but the food was always something to look forward to. Such a disappointment. No one seems to care. read more

Kanuga I have been coming to Kanuga for almost 30 years. My sister in law's family has been coming here since it opened...almost 85 years & at least 5 generations. I want to start by saying Kanuga is one of our favorite places on earth! It is truly a magical place & we have such special memories. It is so special to us that my brother's ashes are buried here, per his request. But...guest period this year has been a nightmare. I completely understand and am supportive of the issues due to staffing challenges as a result of COVID. But the degradation in service that have been most problematic this week are not staffing related. Kanuga has always been a VERY family friendly place to visit, yet this year there are no children's options for lunch/dinner, which we have always had in the past. This is exacerbated by the fact that the menu has not even been remotely child friendly. Yesterday there was no milk for the children at breakfast & we were told there would be none until late afternoon the next day. At every lunch & dinner we have run out of food long before meal time is over. Since they have moved away form assigned seating, which has always been the norm, very often families cannot sit together & sometimes there are no seats available at all. There has yet to be any expression of concern or apology. It has been disappointing to say the least. After generations of coming to our truly happy place (a little bit of heaven)we are rethinking our plans for the future. read more

Extremely nice staff and grounds. I came here for a work retreat and while initially I was shocked at the lack of cell reception (AT&T) and a little bummed out about no TVs in the rooms, by the end of the week I knew I would miss my "unplugged" time. It was a gorgeous setting for contemplation and focus. The food was decent, though my colleagues with a food allergy/preference had a hard time (vegetarian, pescatarian, gluten-free, etc) as there weren't many options and what was provided as an alternative either lacked protein or was really unappetizing. I loved the library which had games, books, and puzzles you could borrow. I ended up doing two puzzles, though both were missing pieces it was still a lot of fun. The closest grocery store was a 10-15 minute drive away so definitely stock up before coming onsite. read more

Although a beautiful setting do not hold your breath waiting for anyone to respond to a message. We have left voice mails, emails, and went in personally to try to coordinate an event and the folks in charge could not have been less interested in assisting us. I can't imagine the level the level attentiveness would sink too once Kanuga had a deposit in hand for and event. Could not be more disappointed in this place! read more

I too am a "long timer" at Kanuga ~ since the 1950's when my family arrived at Kanuga from Florida after our 2 day journey.....and it has always been the BEST experience of my entire life! Often I dream about Kanuga, as I have since a child, and my five children now bring their spouses and children to share this extraordinary experience. In 2020 we came twice during COVID for two separate 4-day stays which was absolutely wonderful ~ even with a reduction in staff and no dining facilities or family/children activities. We were greeted with the same 'spirit of Kanuga' as always, and we enjoyed picnicking at the lake for meals ~ great food with plenty to enjoy. So in 2021 we were excited to return with 15 of us in a guest cottage, yet our experience was far different. The desk staff was not particularly welcoming, and the food was completely disappointing to both children and adults alike. The waterfront staff was WONDERFUL with Mary and her team ~ so we spent our afternoons there with swimming and boating.....so much fun! Hiking on the Daisy Trail and the Rufus Morgan Trail were worthwhile pilgrimages, and all in all, we enjoyed being together ~ as we always do.....but being at Kanuga was not the special experience which it has been for over 7 decades. The manager of the gift shop was friendly and helpful ~ but there was nothing there to entice us with our annual deluge of cherished Kanuga paraphernalia. After our three day weekend, we all left with a feeling of nostalgia for 'what might have been' and 'what should have been.' I am fairly confident that we will return ~ I have spent 60-something summers at Kanuga, along with a couple of years during Thanksgiving and one during Christmas ~ all of which were exemplary experiences and forever memories. I am hopeful and prayerful that Kanuga can regain its reputation as a child's wonderland, a young adult's discovery, and an adult's spiritual refreshment. read more
