This church is oozing with church history of the Protestant Reformation in Switzerland. There was a great divide between the monastery next door and the reformed church during this time, and a 10 metre high wall was built to divide the reformed and catholic sections of town. The wall was torn down in 1818 when the monastery was dissolved. You can still see a section of the wall in town. In 1526 the church was cleaned of all catholic images. In 1845, the renovation of the church was planned, and thanks to Johann Georg Muller this reformed church has the unusual touches of medieval style, as it was his desire to preserve the building structure as much as possible. Unlike most reformed churches, this church stands apart and has colour and beauty within. There is a tower which you can climb during the warmer months, and prides itself in being taller than it's neighbouring cathedral tower. However, the cathedral does have two of them. The current building was built start around 1755, and is one of the last monumental Baroque buildings in Europe. Typically, in a cathedral building one would find the entrance between the two towers, but here you enter by the backside. It was fun to watch several confused people in the courtyard trying to find the entrance. Once you manage to find the entrance you will be impressed by the brightness of the white interior and amazed by the green stucco work, rose marble altars, gilded altar screen, large ceiling frescoes, and abundance of cherubs spying on you from every corner. Beneath the apse there is a small crypt, but it wasn't open. Also, there is no access to climb either of the towers. Overall, the interior took my breath away, and my eyes were always catching something new as I walked throughout the lovely church.

The massive structure is a massive centerpiece for St. Gallen, Pass through a narrow wooden door into the sanctuary and stand in awe: murals painted across the ceiling, iron gates clad with gold flowers, teakwood furnishings and a gigantic, three-story-tall wardrobe. No matter where I stood in this kirche, the view was breathtaking. Every position reveals a new glimpse into the decor. The best view is from the baptismal in the rear, looking forward towards the alter. The size and detail of Fürstabtei Sankt Gallen can be experienced in all its glory. The Cloister is a beautiful piece of architecture and houses the "Black Madonna" which is a Catholic pilgrimage site. Definitely spend a bit of time there. While worship is its primary function rather than beauty, as a tourist you won't get any jaw-dropping photographs inside. It is however interesting that the church has stood since AD 1000. It does hold a special place in my heart as the church attended by my 4th-great-grandmother from her birth in 1791. Your best pictures will be of the exterior clock tower and its brilliant golden Roman numerals, the largest clock face in all of Europe! In fact, the outer structure defines the Zurich skyline!

There are eight windows on top with stunning views. Minus one star because they closed off the balconies, making it impossible to see past the 4' + decorative concrete barrier, except for snippets through the medallions. All in all, a worthwhile stop, but photographers will have to look for another vantage point.

I was surprised to notice that there would be a lunchtime piano concert of Bach performed by a Swedish-German woman who tickeled the ivories with such grace and excellence that I was, for 30 minutes exactly in the middle of a hectic week, transported to another time and place of complete peace and tranquility. For those of you fellow city friends I recommend not only window shopping or having a good meal at mid-day, but also taking the time to notice the opportunities and cultural gifts that living in or visiting such a city provides!

Yelp Review 2026 #53:…read more My first visit to Fraumunster, I didn't even bother going in. I just took pictures of the 4 iconic and most photographed churches in Zurich. I revisited Zürich recently and this time, I checked out the Marc Chagall windows. As an art history buff, I owed myself a visit here even though Chagall isn't my favorite. He's a very important part of art history. He's known for his use of bold and vivid use of colors. He dabbled in painting, stained glass, ceramics, set design, etc. Other notable stained glass creations in Fraumunster include those by Heston, and Giacometti. It costs 5CHF (at time of writing) to enter - which is cheap by Swiss standards. You can't buy tickets in advance or online. Be sure to check their hours. There's a small crypt museum which was only opened to the paying public after renovations in 2016. There's a lot of text to read to learn more about the church. An excerpt: "The Fraumünster was founded in 853 by King Louis "the German", a grandson of Charlemagne. The royal abbey was built on a site which had still been flooded by Lake Zurich until not long before. According to the founding legend, the king doubted whether the location was suitable, whereupon a rope descended from the heavens to mark the construction site, a sign which allayed Louis' concerns."

Is it worth a special trip? No. There are about 4-5 different stained glass windows and while it's very relaxing and unique to a degree, there just isn't much to see and the air quality really isn't great. All in all, if you're in the area, have 10 minutes to spare, and don't mind the fee I'd say go for it, but otherwise (especially if you have allergies) you're not missing much by skipping it.
