We then decided to pop over the road for a late lunch at Omar Khan's. It was about three and the place was empty, not surprisingly but also a bit awkwardly. It was a very cosy, quite posh interior and it felt a little as though we were pushing in. I hasten to add that none of that feeling came from the waiter who was attentive without hovering. He also earned points from me by putting us next to the radiator! We both opted for the early bird menu, a starter and a main for 8.50. I decided on aloo patties and a vegetable makhi, the boyfriend chose meat samosas and chicken rogan josh. This was a brave choice for me, i.e. not a korma, but it sounded mild. The starters were lovely, although sadly the boyfriend found a bit of plastic in his salad. It was an unfortunate moment, but the food itself was lovely and the waiter handled it well by giving us drinks on the house. This was a nice change from other responses I have seen from waiting staff when something has gone awry (my favourite being the waitress who when being advised of a silverfish ON the dining table simply squashed it into the tablecloth and then announced 'There are no silverfish in this establishment madam'!). With the mains, we both had an order of pilau rice and a garlic naan. It seemed a lot as it approached the table on a trolley, but it was just the right size. My curry was gorgeous, mild without being insipid with a nice quantity and selection of veg. The garlic naan was slightly crispy but not burned. I was very happy. I may even venture over again, though I may ensure next time that I take a book to carry me through the video game preview.

Wow! This place gets packed on a Saturday night. We were brought here by a friend who is quite the…read morecurry connoisseur, so I figured he would know a good place for a great meal. I thought the waiting system worked a little strange here because when you walk in, you queue up and basically shuffle along the line until it's your turn to be seated. Only then do they ask how many in your party for a table. Quite a good system, though; seems more fair than standard procedure AND the line went by really quickly. Okay, let's get down to the good stuff- The food was delicious and I really thought the meal was surprisingly authentic. For starters we had the kebabs, and also a fish appetiser (I didn't order these so I don't know the names on the menu) and they were both cooked perfectly. Both appetisers were so flavourful and juicy and were complemented excellently by the sauces provided. For my main I ordered the Chicken Tikka Masala Desi (about £7.45) and they didn't ask how spicy I wanted it, which was better in my opinion, because I like that I can enjoy the dish the way they want me to taste it. We each ordered a naan (I believe £1.95, but don't hold me to it) which were probably about 12" inches and round-ish in shape. They were nice and fluffy and as the last one arrived later than the rest, I can surmise it probably came straight out of the oven. The chicken tikka masala dish was nicely cooked and as you took a bite you could taste all the flavours dripping off of the chicken as if each had their turn; first up the flavour of the tikka sauce, then a light but perfect addition of the taste of the coriander, then, finally, the bite of the spice. It was quite spicy, could be a bit too spicy for some, but I thought the spice kept the integrity of the dish. I could feel myself getting a bit warm but luckily I had asked for tap water and alternated between shoving the deliciousness in my mouth and taking a few quick sips. Sadly, the water ran out soon enough and it seemed hard to flag someone down for a refill. To be fair, I didn't ask, so not a comment against their service. Eventually I resorted to taking short breaks between bites. Maybe people who enjoy more spice wouldn't need breaks. Food was served in a reasonable amount of time, which was surprising considering every seat in the house was taken. They also have a wide selection of desserts, although we didn't partake. Service was average, nothing really to note. If I was in the area I'd probably come again.

The Kashmiri fish used to be nice, however this time it was exceptional!! We ordered 4 between three of us as we really enjoyed the taste. We didn't indulge too much into main course. I ordered Bhindi Balti(okra), I remember asking the waiter if it was fresh and he said yes. What he forgot to say was fresh out of a tin. Although the spices were nicely balanced and it tasted quite good, it was definitely the tinned variety, which is not what I expected. However it would not put me off going there again as there were so many other delights on the menu. They did'nt do chappatis, so we ordered tandoori roti which was excellent, hot and fluffy! The side salad we ordered was not worth mentioning. After the meal I went into the sweet centre part next door and bought some takeaway rasmalai and half a dozen gulab jamon which were both excellent the next day.

For our appetiser we had a Seekh Kebab (my favourite starter) and it was still smoking hot when it was served on our table. I think Akbar's probably has one of the best Seekh kebabs I've tried during my time in England. For mains, I ordered the Tikka Masala and my partner had the Chicken Karahi and they were both spicy (his a little more than mine) but sooo good. You can just taste the freshness of the ingredients and the flavours are so vibrant and delicious. I need to stop writing this before I start salivating!
