Dr. Kelly just helped my husband and I through the difficult process of saying goodbye to our 16 year old dog. She was patient, kind, and responsive during the couple of days between the time we decided it was necessary, and the time we chose her and scheduled the appointment. (I had made calls to several different places, but was put off by not being able to speak directly with the vet who would come to my home.) Dr. Kelly answers her own phone and she was responsive to each of the texts I sent after our first conversation. She was calm, kind, and unhurried. I was somewhat rambling when we spoke, because I was still trying to come to terms with the decision. Dr. Kelly was patient, and explained everything carefully. When she came to our house, she walked me through the aftercare choices, and was so supportive about every detail. It was hard for me to think straight during such an emotional and upsetting time, and I so appreciated her calmness and how loving she was toward my dog, as well as my two young cats. After my dog had passed, Dr. Kelly went outside for awhile to give us private time alone with our dog. There was time for the cats to come out of hiding and say goodbye to the dog as well. Dr. Kelly is the best vet ever. We started with her at Southern California Veterinary and now she comes straight to our home to treat our dogs. For her in-home vet services we have had checkups, we have done minor surgery in our kitchen, and we have treated other ailments. It's the best experience in the whole world. Our dogs are always so happy to see her and never nervous because they are in their house. Two of our dogs get very nervous when going to "the vet" but at home they are just fine. Today - 10-18/14 - I received in the mail, from Dr. Karen Kelly, a plaster cast of my cat's paw prints. It brought back all of the painful memories of putting my Sluggo to sleep 9 days ago. It also reminded me of how professional and empathetic Dr. Karen is. My cat, Sluggo, was diagnosed on 9-16/14 with kidney disease. As a somewhat older cat (11-13 y.o.), this wasn't unbelievable. I was sent home with special food, special pills, and a home IV kit. Like any cat, he hated getting force-fed pills, and he wasn't crazy about getting punctured. After only a few days, I decided to stop treatment and let him go naturally; if I only had him around for 2 weeks instead of 2 months, so be it. I didn't want him stressed about anything. Let him romp around inside and outside - with his friends, the other building cats - as carefree as possible for as long as he had. When it became what I thought was time for him to go, I Googled "In Home Pet Euthanasia." The obvious choice from there was petlossathome.com. I visited their website and entered my zipcode. I was then referred to Dr. Amy, who I called and left a message. She called me back promptly, and advised that she did not serve my area code, but referred me instead to Dr. Robin. So, I called Dr. Robin, only to find that she was out of town, but to please leave a message and someone would get back to me. So, I did. Within 20 minutes, I received a call back from Celeste(?), Dr. Robin's Assistant. Celeste advised me that while Dr. Robin was out of town, referrals were being sent to Dr. Karen Kelly. So, I called called Dr. Karen, and left a message. Dr. Karen called me back promptly. I told her that I was pretty sure it was time, but could she come to my house tomorrow? Either way? Give me her diagnosis/prognosis? Yes, of course she can. So, 9 days ago, around 1pm, she arrived. We chatted briefly about what I wanted (for Sluggo to live forever, of course!), and what I could expect. At this point, Sluggo was feeling pretty crappy, and was hiding under the bed. I went and got him so Dr. Karen could have a look. I think it was about 2 seconds and Dr. Karen knew what I suspected: It was time. She said that he was surely in considerable discomfort; that with kidneys as enlarged as they were, it was most likely renal cancer. Though I had been anticipating this, it did not make the news any less heartbreaking. I asked Dr. Karen if it was okay for me to get my neighbors across the hall; they loved Sluggo too, knew this was happening, and wanted to say goodbye. So here is where I must interject the gist of this review. Of course, Dr. Karen said it was okay to get my neighbors. Whatever I wanted; however much time I needed; she was there for the duration. Always professional, always sympathetic/empathetic. She sat politely and patiently as my neighbors and I petted and loved Sluggo and said our goodbyes before putting him to sleep. That's really almost all I have to say. Dr. Karen administered the drugs and my sweet guy died on my lap. She let me and my neighbors bawl as much as we needed. She then showed her true bedside manner. She started asking questions about Sluggo and his life; reminding us of his happy life, not his death. Her timing and manner were perfect. What a pro! Dr. Kelly is great! She's been to my home twice and provided excellent care and advice for my foster cats then and in between too. Her tech is also a skilled cat handler, tested by two of my harder to handle cats. It was so much easier to have them come to the house instead of wrangling three cats to and from a vet office all at once! Dr Kelly took care of their routine checkups including a vaccinations, blood work, etc, and refilling medication. Another time she diagnosed and successfully treated one cat's loose stool, and also gave spot-on advice on how to handle an IBD flare up. I've tried so many vets fostering hundreds of cats, kittens and dogs over the decades, so it's fantastic to find a home visit vet that is not only knowledgable but is caring, a good communicator, and compassionate too. We got Dr. Kelly's name from our Vet at SoCal Vet Hospital, hoping a home visit would be less stressful and traumatic on our 17-year-old cat and his mommy LOL. The process was so much better than trying to wrangle a cat or two and listen to them howl all the way to the Vet as they know that is the only place they leave the house to go to. Dr. Kelly and her assistant, Fabio were so patient and great. They took their time and treated my cat with love and respect. Several procedures were done at home including blood pressure, blood being drawn, and urine samples all with minimal discomfort on my kitties. We followed up with the second visit several weeks later, this time her assistant Monica, who was also great and patient. Dr. Kelly has made herself available on multiple occasions, including the weekend to answer any questions I've had or calm my nerves about a potential procedure I am considering for one of the cats. She is truly a gem and we are so glad to have found her. The cost of a home visit was well worth it as the stress level was so much less all around. Unfortunately, he suffers from a heart condition and needs regular blood tests to monitor his kidney health. Dr. Kelly and Lory came to the apartment and were so gentle, yet efficient, that the whole process of collecting blood and checking blood pressure was over within 20 minutes - that included time up front when they hung out and chatted and went over paperwork in an attempt to make my cat feel relaxed and not threatened. They then emailed the test results to me and my cat's primary vet. Overall, the experience was so much less traumatic for my cat (and me!) than bringing him to the vet. When I heard the devastating news that my dog Spirit was not going to recover from his cancer, I made the decision to end his pain, and I wanted to do this immediately so he would not suffer one minute longer.
