I agree with jimeat. I used to be a regular here (every bank holiday monday!). It is a fair drive…read morefrom where I live and, of course, one of us had to forgo the beer! Fortunately, on a Monday night, there is a folk singers meeting, when anyone who can sing or play nything at all will be invited to contribute to the entertainment. This can be heartily recommended to anyone with the slghtest interest in music. The ales are another matter! In one side there are three guest ales, usually including Caledonian Deuchars IPA - I have spen months trying to work out what they do to this as I can't get it to taste as good! The other two guests are usually almost as palatable and always interesting. After a number of visits, I noticed so singers drinking different beers - this was when I found out that the guests on the other bar are often different! Sometimes a choice of six! Needless to say, this is a must-visit whenever we get the time to drive there (or get someone to drive us there, even better). I've never been during the day time, so don't know if they do food, but remember passing a kitchen when coming in from the small car park at the rear. The onlt reason for not giving five stars is that it's a bdy awkward pub to get to!

The best pub in Runcorn. It just is…read more I'm an ale drinker, so the quality of beer is my main criteria in pub choice, and the ales at The Prospect are spot on. Normally a choice of 5 or 6 ales (personally I'm rather partial to the Adnams Broadside which seems to be fairly regular). As said before, the choice of ales differs depending on which side of the bar you sit on, so make sure you check what's on the other side. Friendly staff. Really nice old-style pub, with an open fire in the winter. Food is simple, but done well and reasonably priced. Ranges from toasted sandwiches and pie and chips (Cowards pies for those in the area), to currys and more exotic stuff on the specials boards. Food service tends to stop a bit earlier than you'd expect (generally stopped by 1.30 pm at lunch, and 7.30 pm at dinner), so well worth ringing ahead if you intend to eat there.

i like the wetherspoons chain of pubs, the local to me is the ferry boat, they have done a good job…read moreof converting the building, the meals are not bad,not the best but quite good value, the staff are always friendly, but was not pleased, when after at least a hour of drinking there, my daughter was suddenly asked for her id to prove she was old enough, yet they served some other girls who was certainly younger, she did not have her id on her so refused to serve us,i stated that has i was her mother i could certainly vouch my daughters age, however we had to leave,i of course know that these checks need to be made, but why serve drinks, for around a hour then question it,she should of had id on her but she now is well over 21,apart from this incidence i enjoy wetherspoons, but found the barm cakes to be very dry my only complaint but not very nice. I've never really rated Wetherspoon's before. Yes, they have cheap drink and the food is cheap, but…read morethe service usually isn't up to par.. All this changed at The Ferry Boat in Runcorn! A friend and I decided to go in and have a meal and a cheeky drink as we were passing through. So we get to the bar and there are special ales on offer, so we asked for tasters of the lot, the bar manager was happy to comply and give his own little view of each and every ale! Secondly when asking for the free drink with the meal, he offered me Foster's. He's not supposed to but as I already ordered it he said he'd "make an exception". Thirdly, the food was cooked to perfection, for a burger and chips. The bar manager came over and asked if everything's okay, talked to us, always had a smile on his face and even offered to bring our drinks over from the bar. I've never had service like that in a Wetherspoon's, and if I'm ever in the area again I will go there and recommend it to anyone.
