My husband and I are are crazy cat people, so when in Amsterdam, of course we had to visit Kattenkabinet (The Cat Cabinet), a museum all about CATS! Kattenkabinet is a quirky museum with an eclectic collection of cat related objects such as paintings, figurines, and even a mummified cat from 200 BC. And of course there are actual cats living in the museum. Apparently there are five cats living in Kattenkabinet (per the sign, do not pet the black cat!), although we only saw two cats (none of which were the black cat). The museum is quite small (although there is an outdoor garden you can visit, but it was closed for the season), and we only spent about half an hour at Kattenkabinet. But at €10, the price is quite reasonable (and as a student -- my student ID had not yet expired -- I got in for half price), and CATS! This was one of those unique museums I found when researching where to visit on our trip to Amsterdam. There were a plethora of museums to visit, but my girlfriend and I being cat owners, we wanted to stop by and see the eclectic and unique experience this art museum had to offer. Located on Herengracht, this is easily a museum you could walk right by and never notice, unless you had it marked and were looking for it. We were greeted with a black and white sign welcomed us, as we walked down into the front door of the canal house. It was rather crowded the day/time we arrived and paid for two admissions and started our self guided tour. It wasn't long before we saw a star of the museum, one of the cats walking around the inside of the lobby area. Lots of art work lined the stairwells and hallways, some from artists such as Picasso, Rembrandt and Toulouse-Lautrec among many others. Many beautiful rooms with narrow hallways and access to an outside garden. This area drew out attention with feline related movie posters and advertisements, along with a little cat napping under a bench. Inside we ran across a third cat that was quietly sleeping as visitors sat down for selfie. Everything in the canal house is cat related. This has to be one of my favorite oddly specific museums in the world. Amsterdam is home to many museums and has quite a few that are very specific. This museum is dedicated to--spoiler alert--cats. Featuring all kinds of cat-related art pieces, it's a fun diversion. Swing by on your way to the flower market. The museum is small but still has lots to see, including a garden that is full of old advertising posters that feature cats, tons of paintings and sculptures, and even furniture. My favorite just-learned-this-is-a-thing piece was a porcelain cat scaling the wall panel above a fireplace. If you're lucky, you might see a museum cat--there were three when I visited. One was totally okay with being petted, but the others dozed just out of reach. The gift shop is fun, too! read more

TBH, I was as interested in seeing the inside of a 1667 canalside home in Amsterdam as I was in seeing the exhibits, so this was kind of a twofer for me. The museum definitely delivers on the name, serving up works of art by the likes of Picasso, Rembrandt, Toulouse-Lautrec & others though, like any museum--especially one centered around the subject vs. the artist--is going to be a little hit or miss, but I wouldn't have missed it for anything. We even got to see two of the three cat residents of the museum, who were absolutely adorable. In general, we found the smaller, more niche Amsterdam museums to be even more enjoyable than the larger ones, to which the tourists usually flock. read more

Sweet little place to see all things cat. Statues, art, and figurines line the walls and even the garden. If you are lucky, it is possible to meet the cat residents and you might get to pet them too if they are feeling social. If you are a cat lover this is an excellent stop! read more

I know there are many mixed reviews of this museum however my husband and I more than enjoyed our time here. It is a small oddities style space. There are three large rooms with different cat paintings and sculptures. I think it is a great experience for the cheap price. There were two museum cats that were absolute sweetie pies and very calm. I don't like the reviews where people are upset they were ignored by cats. Cats are live animals and can have their own schedules and preferences if you are calm and kind they are much more likely to want to be around you. I would even come back here because while small it was super calming and fun for us. The fast paced city of Amsterdam fades away while inside this place. I have nothing negative at all to say and we are so happy we came. I think you have to just accept this place for what it is and you will have a great time! We also got a fun Dutch card cat game. On my recent Amsterdam trip, my coworker and I noticed this place on Google maps and decided we had to check it out. Before shelling out the 10 euro admission, we asked if there would be any cats. The lady at the front said, "Of course!" We were sold. As two cat people who missed our cats at home, we enjoyed the art and the two cats we spotted. The art is fun and there's a lot of it in a very nicely decorated home. There's even a yard with cat art! Love the gift store, too -- lots of great art for cat lovers. I just wish there had been more cats, but I know, it was a cat museum. A must-visit for cat lovers! read more

This weird little space is a single story of an otherwise private home with three cats. It's a hipster's paradise. Went with husband and his grandma, both cat people. Our take away, we would have been bummed to miss it and are now just bumped we went. Get your cat love elsewhere. read more

I LOVE cats and I'm speedily on my way to becoming a crazy cat lady like the one who owns this "museum." I use the term loosely because this is basically a weird old lady's stinky house that's filled with cat paraphernalia and a few random felines. Oh, and she charges 10 bucks to get inside. The whole place reeks of cat urine, but I only saw two live kitties. There's a bunch of disturbing cat-themed "artworks" and tapestries and crap piled high in every corner. Playbills, photographs, varying degrees of awfulness in the form of sculpture and paintings, and photocopied images of cats stuck in frames. I am not making this up. I know, I know, it sounds amazeballs AWESOME. Sadly, it's not. I wanted to love this place but I couldn't get out of there fast enough. I walked way out of my way to visit and I left sorely disappointed. This cat lover is pawsitively (hee!) stunned at the high rating of this tourist trap and rip-off. My husband summed it up perfectly when he turned to me and said "why the hell did we PAY to see this, we have cats at home!" Even the small gift shop was a huge letdown. My advice is to save your dough for something worthwhile in Amsterdam and just go find the weird cat lady in your own hometown and invite yourself over for tea. Same experience for sure. read more

Very cute little museum for a quick stop to look at some adorable cat artm. There was only one actual cat there when we went and he was not friendly (totally fine) but by pictures online and reviews I thought there would be more cats there to interact with. Also seemed a little overpriced for the tickets (€12.50 each) for a 10 minute exhibit. Not sure if it was worth it, very friendly staff though! read more

You will pay 10€ per person to walk up a flight of stairs to see 3 rooms of reprinted cat photos, sign your name on a piece of trash and leave it on a table, and see 2 cats; only 1 of which is comfortable being pet. Not worth the hype and the ticket lady was very rude to an elderly man with a hearing aid in front of us in line. read more

I was super excited about this museum. It's small but there are quite a few art pieces and photographs to check out. There was also a cute area where people left notes to their cats so you know I gave my babies a shout-out. I think if you like cats and odd museums, you'll enjoy it. Some cons: -Not too many actual cats. We saw a couple at the start but they both ran into an EMPLOYEES ONLY area. There was one kitty upstairs that was really friendly and let you pet him but that was it. I guess I can't complain too much as this is an art museum. -No WiFi password for visitors. -Service wasn't too friendly. -Gift shop could be way better. There is so much quirky cat-themed stuff out there in the world but they really only had books and postcards in stock. read more

Even though it's a small museum, it's definitely peacefully satisfying your need of uploading your system some really magnificient data full of cats:) Cats are everywhere in this building and there is one special kitty, who helps you walk around the rooms and guides you through the exhibit. I loved this little break from all the touristy activities and tourists also. Not many people found out about this place, I think; but if you love cats and wouldn't mind seeing some artworks by picasso and rembrandt (containing cats) you should definitely visit Kattenkabinet! :) read more

This place is overpriced for what it is. You basically pay to have admission to a cat hoarder's home. That being said, I'll acknowledge that the collection of cat art is pretty vast: it's from various time periods, different artists, and in an array of forms (pottery, oil paintings, even animation). If you're really into cats this might be a good rainy day activity, but if you skip it you won't be missing out on something that can't be satisfied by YouTubing some cat videos. read more

This place actually really surprised me. I have heard that it can take ages to get into a cat cafe so you can sit down a pet some cats, however hidden away in Amsterdam is this place. It isn't actually a cat cafe but rather a museum that is dedicated to everything to do with cats, and as can be expected there are real cats that wonder around the place (though when they get sick of people they can disappear out the back). The museum is basically a collection of posters and cat figurines, as well as a couple of kittens, and an adult cat, that roam around the place. There is also a shop downstairs where you can purchase copies of the posters on display (as well as other things). If you love cats it is definitely a place to check out. read more

Look, are you into cats? Do you want to see the inside of a fancy house that's been filled up with cat art, a lot of which is just prints and not originals? Why hasn't this been reviewed yet? It's a museum dedicated to cats, for the love of God!! The Katten Kabinet is one of Amsterdam's best kept secrets. Tucked just out of the way of the Centruum thoroughfare, it's a house packed with cat artfacts. For 6 Euro's you can get a glimpse into the mind of someone who is completely kitty obsessed. I nearly peed my pants with excitement when I saw some live cats strutting around the museum like they owned the joint. And own it they do! From the Ancient Egyptians to the cosmopolitan Europeans, humans have been forever enchanted by the majesty of our feline friends. The Katten Kabinet's examples of Parisian poster art and ancient Chinese cat paintings are just a small sample of the wealth of cat art that exists out there. Within its small confines you can experience a wall to wall cat bonanza. They even have a small gift shop where you can purchase some prints and postcards. I am not ashamed to admit that I am the craziest of cat women, so when I saw there was a cat museum in Amsterdam, I just HAD to go! It's not huge inside, in fact it's someone's house that was turned into a museum to commemorate their favourite pet (I'd totally do the same thing to be honest) Lots of interesting cat memorabilia dotted around the place. Can you imagine my shock and joy when a REAL cat appeared and tried to show me and my boyfriend around the place!? Honestly, it was one of the highlights of my trip. One man's crazy is another person's guilty pleasure....I could not resist knowing that there's a house museum here in Amsterdam with all things cats! The outside was tiny, and the sign is small, but when you enter, the lobby has a table for admission fees collection, books, maps, and tons of cat posters. The next room over are the merchandise, which are lots of cat art posters, postcards and more books! The 3 rooms upstairs laid out all the paintings and prints along the walls like a set room dressing and not a gallery type. There're statues, figurines, sketches and posters of cats everywhere! There is a special gallery featuring art work by noted cat artists. Love the tiny Egyptian textile of a cat from 2nd century...very unique! I could only bring back postcards of the rarer cat prints...since the posters were sold out. A definite small treasures for those who love the quirky! 6€ for admission. Some wealthy guy who really loved his cat named J. Pierpont Morgan (of course) dedicated this entire collection and museum to him. Imagine "I can haz cheeseburger," but in canvas and sculptural form. It really is an awesome collection of art housed in a beautiful canal home. I especially dig the real life cats wandering around the galleries. The museum has a small gift shop in which they sell an extensive array of cat posters from old ads, some of which are copies from their real collection. It's a cute stop before heading towards the larger museums. read more

If you like cats, Kattenkabinet is not to be missed. I wasn't sure about it when my husband suggested we check it out, but I was quickly won over! The owner has clearly put a lot of thought and love into this collection - paintings, sculptures - even a cat mummy! When I visited, there was also a lovely exhibit of cat cartoons. Above and beyond the cat art, the house itself is something to see. Definitely look up at the ceilings! Sadly, we didn't see any actual cats on our visit...but such is the nature of cats - they appear only when they wish. read more

Very small museum (basically 1 and a bit floors of an Amsterdam canal house) but a nice place to kill some time if you like cats. There are various paintings, posters and artefacts with a cat theme, as well as a computer terminal with information available about them and a number of friendly genuine cats wandering round too (I counted 4 of them!) They were also selling some rare posters. If you're wandering Herengracht, this is definitely worth popping into. read more

An adorable little gem of a museum with a very fun collection of art featuring cats, it's own resident kittens, and very friendly staff! The art ranges from Ancient times (Egyptian is the oldest) to modern day, with an especially rich collection of paintings and French art. There resident cats are very friendly and love being petted. The museum has a chic gift shop. The lady who greeted me at the front desk was very helpful in explaining the history of the museum and helping me select good gifts for my friends.
