What a cute little camp ground! I made a reservation through the DOC site (easiest way to do it for sure!) for one night, one tent, and two people at Kauaeranga Valley ($26 total - they charge $13 per person). It's actually a massive plot of land with multiple little camp grounds. We stayed at Shag Stream Campground, which was for tents only. The campground had one toilet, which was in a permanent little building but non-flushable. There is a container of hand sanitizer inside though! There was no running water in that bathroom but if you walked to the toilets at the visitors center, you would find a sink and flushable toilet there, as well as a filtered water tap. I loved that the campsite was all grass - it was so much cleaner than the dirt camp sites I'm used to, and made for a comfier stay. We parked our car, set up the tent, and within less than an hour a camp ground ranger came around to give us a parking sticker (we arrived Christmas Day which is the only day the visitors centre is closed).
