The road gets pretty uneven at the end. You won't have to walk far. The lighthouse itself isn't large or fancy but the views that surround it are stunning and make it all worth the drive to find it. The volcanic rocks and cliffs against the ocean waves crashing in just leaves you in awe.

Drive slowly over the few areas that are not smooth. We visit this lighthouse several times a month. Great ocean watching! Fabulous whale watching (when in season)! And over flight of aircraft too! Take some time and visit this point, known as Ninini point, and so is became the name of the lighthouse. While you are there, take your trash out. It is forbidden to walk on any other heiau and considered disrespectful to ancient and current Hawaiians. It's ceremonial site, a place for worship, and is very well kept, landscaped with retaining walls and offers a nice view of Wailua Bay. I dare say beautiful. It is nice to just stand here. Canoes would find the safety of Wailua River because of the Kukui nut oil candles burning here. It was built nearly 500 years ago and once stood 230 feet long. It still has a great presence.

This is the remains of a small heiau, an ancient sacred site, which one may freely explore. It…read moreconsists of the remains of a small stone wall enclosing a grassy platform. The location is on a promontory on the beach in Kapa'a, with some nice views along the shore. It is reached by a footpath along the beach. At the southern end by the Kaui Shores Hotel, the path goes through woods and vegetation to the Lae Nani beach and resort and the path to the heiau is in the woods. There was nobody else there when we went and it was a peaceful spot to contemplate and take in the area. It is, as the sign says, sacred, so one should respect that but is it an interesting, peaceful and scenic site.

The road dead ends near an overlook with tight parking, but you can see out and down to the ocean and the walls are covered with birds of all types. A gate stops you from entering the grounds of the reserve and lighthouse. If you go to recreation.gov you can make reservations to visit, there is usually a fee, but we came on a free day. Past the gate, you drive down a steep drive to a parking area with government buildings. You then walk out to the ranger station, gift shop and lighthouse area. This is a historical location which should be explored. It is also a reserve for animals and you will mostly see the birds and learn about them. You can get your national park stamp and visit the gift shop. Lots to see, and I would add this as a must see on Kauai! You will have to plan ahead to get your reservation.

Located on the northernmost tip of Kauai, Kilauea Lighthouse was built in 1913 and served as a…read morebeacon for traveling ships approaching the island. Nowadays, although outdated and no longer in service, this lighthouse still serves as a popular beacon for tourists visiting one of the most frequently visited attractions on the island. Situated within the Kilauea Point National Wildlife Refuge, you'll have to pay admissions in order to enter. We serendipitously showed up on one of the admission-free day without even realizing it, so was only subject to the $1 reservation fee. There are several parking lots after you pay, all of which fill up fast. However, the ranger will direct you where to find available spots. The walk to the lighthouse will treat you to some breathtaking views of the cliffs and water below. And if you're lucky, some nice variety of marine life in addition to the plethora of birds flying around. We happened to see a swimming sea turtle at one point at the cliffs below thanks to the crystal-clear Hawaii waters. And although you can walk right up to the lighthouse to take pictures, entrance into the lighthouse itself is barred as they have suspended tours inside.

While staying in Princeville, we decided to check out Queen's Bath, and it was absolutely worth the…read moreeffort. Parking in front of the entrance is extremely limited, and the surrounding residential area doesn't allow non-permitted parking. I ended up dropping off my wife and her friend so they could start the trek while I parked at the nearby golf course, which added about a half-mile walk to the entrance. From the entrance, the hike down to Queen's Bath is about half a mile. It's not too long, but there are a few tricky spots that require some careful footing. It's definitely manageable for most people, including kids, as long as you take your time. Once you arrive, you're rewarded with a beautiful natural tide pool filled with seawater and fish. Some people were even jumping from the surrounding rocks into the water below. The spot was lively, with plenty of tourists and families making the hike down to enjoy the view and the experience. A little extra work to get there, but the payoff is huge. Queen's Bath is a must-see if you're in Princeville.

PSA: If the gate is closed, do not go in! This hike is not bad when dry, but quickly gets dangerous…read morethe wetter/muddier it gets. The gate is there for your protection. If you do get the chance to go in, you will be amazed by how beautiful the area is! The baths were soo pleasant to swim, snorkel, and relax in. Walking along the rocks between the baths was easy as long as you watch your footing as the rocks are not flat. I highly, highly recommend coming here if the weather holds up for you!

This attraction has a small parking lot. I had to wait about 10 minutes for a spot. Only parked…read morein marked spots or you may get a ticket. After you park you then have to take about a 3/4 mile hike on some hard clay/dirt to get here. You will come to the Kings Bath before the Queens Bath. They have a fence that they lock if the surf is too dangerous, preventing direct access to the trail leading the the bath. However, people just easily walk around it and go the the bath. The Kings Bath is very dangerous. People die here every year. They have rescue stops positioned all along the coast. This bath is open directly into the ocean. You can easily be swept out into the ocean by the tide and DIE. The Kings Bath is an alluring swim hole. The water is very clear, the temperature is nice and it is relatively easy to get to. I did not partake in this bath. I was too scared. I did however see some brave kids partaking in all the Baths glory. There are a few cliffs that you can dive off of there, but like I mentioned, be careful. If you are willing to accept the risk and jump in remember a few things. Never go alone and leave before sunset.
